Super Slayer vs Lesser Slayer

Can someone check me on this? I always understood that the Super Slayer was the Holy Grail. Now I've heard, that it's the Lesser. Example..I'm, a mage, fighting an Orge Lord, which is the best spellbook to have (most damage dealt) the Super, "Repond Slayer" or Lesser, "Orge Slayer"? Also, would it be the same choice whether it's a weapon or spellbook? Thanks.

The repond slayer would do double damage while the ogre slayer would do triple damage. While the ogre slayer is definitely the way to go if that's all you are fighting. the super slayers are useful when fighting more than one type that falls under that super slayer.

Also some creatures don't have a lesser slayer particular to them and only a super slayer would work.

Hope that helps.

This was changed as part of Publish 60, the publish that included the Stygian Abyss expansion, although I believe it's not specifically noted in the publish notes. The change affects anything with a slayer property (spellbooks, weapons, musical instruments). If I recall correctly from the beta, I believe the thinking of the dev team was that this change would make much more useful the more commonly found items with "regular" slayer properties. Instead of people just pitching those items in favor of a "super slayer," now any slayer item would become useful, as "super slayer" items would still be needed for killing monsters for which there was no specific "regular slayer" item available.
I wish slayer instruments did double or triple damage.

Do slayer instruments work more effectively than plain instruments for ordinary use of a barding skill (not masteries)? And if yes, are super slayers less or more effective than "regular" slayer instruments, e.g., would it be better to use a reptile slayer instrument to area peace greater dragons or use a dragon slayer instrument?
Information on the effectiveness of normal versus exceptional and slayer instruments can be found here: http://uo.stratics.com/content/skills/bardingdifficulty.php.
A correct slayer instrument lowers the barding difficulty of the target by 10 points (effectively making your barding skill 20 points higher). Excepional instruments reduce the target's barding difficulty by 5 points (effectivly making you barding skill 10 points higher). There is no difference between lesser and super slayer instruments, they are eqaully effective if the target is of that group, e.g. a Reptile Slayer and Dragon Slayer have the same bonus (this is unlike the Slayer property on weapons and spell books).

Regarding Area Peace, neither a slayer nor an exceptional instrument provides any bonus versus a regular instrument. Area Peace is determined only with the Bard's Peacemaking Skill, there is no target barding difficulty. Area Peace is success based (off the peacemaking skill) not difficulty based as is targeted peacemaking.

That's some great info, I'm always amazed at how much stuff is on stratics for things like this.
Second that, ID...Stratics has a lot of great resources, one of the best being these boards. Hard to beat having members that are as knowledgeable as so many of ours are and, more importantly, willing to share with the rest of us. Case in point, this thread.

Just get the Fallen Mystics Spellbook - nicer than anything you could craft I believe.
Easier said than done! No one ever sells it on Ches, and it's difficult to get the drop (I two-man the Stygian and sometimes we don't get any drops at all). (I have one myself, which makes Lady M so much fun--two-man mage'd Lady M the other day--but need another for my friend.)

Great link. Got a little nostalgic reading about the history....
  • "The very first Slayer weapons in the game were Undead slayers, but were known as Silver weapons".
I remember my first Silver, think it was a Katana, used it against a Lich, what a difference! I was King of the Undead. Good times.
Indeed. As a young T-hunter, I made good money selling silver weapons at the WBB.

OMG. I remember when I found a Silver Scimitar (sp?) of Power! I gave it to a friend of mine because we as a group had a heck of a time in Wind getting past the liches. He would lead the group, slashing away as we made our way to the garden.

Good times indeed.
