so my daughters have been watching me play UO for their entire lives and they frequently ask me when they can play.
and i being the every concerned parent tell them when they get older.
well, over Christmas i decided to cave in and let them play.
so i started a brand new account for each of them then i gave them the broadest of broad overview of the game and installed it on their laptops and i left.
i decided that i could go one of two routes with them.
i could take them under my wing and hussle them off to one of my castles and make them the best suits in game and show them how to power game and level their new toons up to be gods in a week....

or

i could let them have the experience that i had back in '97 and let them sink or swim on their own.

so i walked away and let them fumble around on their own.
for a week i heard them playing and yelling and laughing and i resisted all urges to check on them.
from time to time they would come into my den and ask me a question.... where do i sell leather?
why is there this huge blue fella running around in the game? how do i get onto a horse?

but i think the funniest thing has to be when i went to go chase them into bed one night and they where each in their own room on their laptops yelling accross the hallway at each other as they played.
seems they where in the wild forest that surrounds New Haven and they had been set upon by some evil mongbats and one ettin. so i walked in and was watching them and i was suprised to see they where with 3 other new players!
they had a group of 5 of them.... dieing to mongbats and a ettin!
hahahaha, i couldnt help but laugh and it brought back fond memories from years past.

but what i couldnt believe was there was 5 of them!
and it was obvious that they where all brand new and had no idea what to do in the game.
i actually had to log in and take them all to the bank in haven and show them what the bank was and how to use it.

anyways, i thought that was funny and interesting.
so there are new players in the game, and they die just like we did 15 and a half years ago.
and wow, do girls ever get mad when they get looted by brigands!!!

so, what you're really saying here is that if EA won't advertise to get new customers, the players will have to start breeding. Come on UO, start makin' babies!
p.s. Could we possibly get a pic thread going so I can see my future baby momma?

About me:
Fairly successful merchant, likes mining for saltpeter, making potions, and pirating in the evening after a long day of slaying the dragon. I have one house in the city under the protection of guards, and a second home overlooking a nice sandy beach on a remote island in felucca.

Looking for: I like brunettes and redheads. Preferably a skilled killer so we can give our children a good balance for appreciating UO

alittle off topic but maybe 10 yrs ago. my son had started playing the warcraft 2 and when you highlight a group their head profiles show in top corner as a group.
he had a dream of that and the faces were actually his brothers in the group.

I should be curious for any information you may have about the noobs your girls were playing with.

Their schoolmates, persuaded to play by them?

Random new players they happened to meet?

Also, from the perspective of looking at EA's occasional adventures trying to design new player experiences....

Had they done to the New Haven noob quests? Were they wearing the noob artifacts?

How old are your daughters? I brought my partner into the game a while ago as a complete newb. I helped them out to some degree on Great Lakes, then I decided to switch back to Siege and left them to their own devices. They did the whole NEW2 thing, but they would die to the simplest of things and killing a daemon was a HUGE accomplishment. The good old days like when I killed my first lich pre-aos, I thought I was soo powerful.

my girls are 10 and 11.
and no the people they met in game they actually met in the game.
the one was a returning player who hadnt been in game for over 10 years and the other 2 where new just like them.
now this is what i found interesting.
i probably should have just put them on siege, cause for some reason they didnt figure out that you can buy up to 40 in pretty much every skill or do training quests in new haven, they just went out into the forest and started attacking stuff and trying to tame rabbits and such.
so after 2 weeks they have the oddest assortment of skills on their characters.
they where totally living out of their backpacks as they had no idea what the bank was or how to sell stuff or even buy stuff for that matter.
i did meet them in game and show them a couple things about a week in, like where the bank was and how to use it and tried to tell them about making a template to follow which went totally over their heads.
apparently the next generation of UO players like to be sword wielding tamers that use the camping skill.
who would have seen that coming!
and, little did i know, but its better to have a floppy hat on that has no resists then it is to have ANYTHING else on because a floppy hats looks the nicest with a dress. or so ive been told by the UO fashion police that live down the hallway.
but on the plus side, the next generation finds it just as funny as i do to see someone in a loincloth at the bank.

There is a certain logic to the camping skill. I can see why they'd want it. I was quite-depressed when they took out camping from the dungeons, thanks to people using the camping skill to camp one of the Doom steal-ables. The last REAL use of the camping skill, outside of new characters that can't as-easily get back to town when they want to log out, was gone.

Warrior-tamers can actually be viable with Chivalry; seen it happen.

I wouldn't necessarily associate idiosyncratic templates with Siege. More people than we realize don't necessarily power-game, they just have a template that works with what they want to do, and their characters eek out a living in the game.

And the great thing about Imbuing + Reforging + new loot system is that, when they are ready to move on to a more intense UO experience, they can find a way to still wear floppy hats and yet remain viable.

Seen a lot of that of late too.

This does make me wonder. I thought there were all kinds of quests in place to teach newpeople the basics, but it sounds like your girls just had to stumble blindly through the game like everyone else when this game started. That could be very frustrating for the few new players that do join. I remember ages ago someone in my guild was a counselor or something - basically they got paged when new players needed help but that program got shutdown like so many others.

Though your stories do bring up some definite nostalgic moments. One of the worst for me was when I started I wanted to play a melee character, but had no idea I needed magery to heal (this is before they fixed the healing with bandages ability), so whenever I got hurt I would just run off and hide - finally I met someone who explained magery, scrolls and reagents.

First of all thanks for sharing this story! If nothing else, it reminds me that I need to visit New Haven more often.

For the record, I am still waiting for my original build (swords/mining/blacksmith/quasi-tamer) to come back into style.

It also reminds me of when I was first learning to play UO and a r/l friend made a comment about skill gain that, for whatever since-forgotten reason, made me think I was supposed to lock my tactics skill from raising (something like, "you don't want to raise tactics too fast!"). Weeks and weeks of power hours later, with swords and anatomy in the high 80's and tactics purposely locked in the 50's, I asked my friend "so when can I unlock my tactics skill from gaining?" and he replied with laughing and "why did you do that?". I think there was internet silence for about 5 literal minutes as he was undoubtedly laughing and I was trying to figure out why I did it in the first place.

The really ironic part of this story is that even with a completely skilled template and fancy suit they still do the same thing. My 10 year old daughter and 8 year old son both have characters on a couple of my less used accounts. I trained up a nice mystic Mage for my daughter and a dexxer for my son. Both have pretty decently imbued suits for their templates. However, when they play together they do the same kind of stuff the OP described.. Running are taming skittering hoppers and the like, killing mongbats, etc.

However the best part was watching my 8 year old PWN my wife's Mage (who has played since 2000)!

2 evil minions who will go and fetch resources for me or 2 dedicated healers who will run around behind me healing and curing me as i play.

but, from what ive seen so far there are far too many Cranes in the 'pretty Chinese land' to occupy their time.

My 3 year old niece loves Dragons ,and Dinasours. I got on my tamer to show her my pets, to explain, and show to her how a tamer works, and I took my skree out of town to kill some sheep, cows, etc. I said you pick what you want the skree to kill next. Didn't even think about it her lil finger went right for my character, and she says her.

Back when I started I told my son absolutely he was NOT to play this game.

He was I believe about 12 at the time. I told him it's NOT for you this is MY game.

Well after a month or so he started sneaking on the game late at night and playing on another shard. After a few weeks I kinda noticed. I decided not to get to mad.

Few more months in and he's got 4 pretty well trained character he owns a nice Villa given to him by some guildmates..... and I'm still killing stuff at Brit Cemetery and hardly have a clue what I'm doing. I don't have a house and I certainly am far from completing any character haven't GM'ed skill one. I had to get another account later so I could have a decent size house on GL's.

2 years later he decides to quit for Final Fantasy Online and I'm still playing UO. I have since closed down his house on Pacific and packed all his junk in his bankbox and I have now 9 accounts.

Now as much as I have TRIED to get my Sister or my Daughter to play both of them act like I have cooties or something when I mention how much I love playing UO. They think that farmville on Facebook is all that and I won't use Facebook because I've decided it's the Devils Tool.... and it should burn in a fire. But can't get them to try UO. *sighs*

One year at work we were to tell stuff about ourselves for the "board"... Was supposed to be true facts about us that "no one" would know. So I told the truth ...... I said well I'm the Mayor of a town. Of course no one believed me.... Until I explained and said Yes I am the Mayor of the city of Yew. I've been the Mayor there for years. In my game. They still think I'm insane. But to me there is nothing more relaxing than coming home and getting online and logging into UO and just being lost in a whole new world where yes I can be the Mayor.

Hi Poo just wanted to warn you to watch your young children when they play UO.

14 is the minimum age in the Tos or Roc and there is a good reason for this.

I am mother of 4, 2 girls 2 boys, all of whom played UO when we first started in late 2002.

In fact my oldest is the first who played it at a friends house and later used her own money to buy a Renaisannce CD at the mall one day for $10.

I did not stand watch over my kids shoulders as they played UO, but I should have.

The two youngest suffered most from this.

The first incident I know about, I'm sure there are many I don't know about, was some weirdo in party with my 11 year old son, saying something to the effect of "*massages nipples* I know you like it". My son had called me to the computer he was on for some reason when I saw this.

Of course I had a chat with the person, a girl char but most likely a guy irl.

The 2nd incident my 13 year old daughter, who when she was 15 I learned had been telling guys in UO she was 18.

Later at age 16 I learned she'd borrowed a webcam and was getting naked for her UO "boyfriend".

The UO "boyfriend" went to prison at age 18 for something much worse than sending my kid's naked pics around the web.

I was told he dated this old person in UO who liked to ask people for their naked pics when he was around 14, so I see it as an old perv making new pervs.

:(

Pervs are on the net and therefore the net is dangerous for kids and UO is no exception.

Your young kids need supervision.

oh i hear ya.
that is my biggest fear right there.

but they play together and im always in the next room listening to them.
and they have good heads on their shoulders.
but i have already turned off their accounts, UO is only for christmas holidays and maybe summer holidays if we get some crappy weather.

they will have enough time to play online when they are older.
or when they figure out how to turn their wireless antennas back on their laptops.....

I was in WoW for a whole 2 hours when I saw more porn that I ever wished to. So trust me UO is not alone...

I saw some ugly stuff there and deleted WoW from my computer fast as all get out. If I wanted that I'd play Second Life.

My only thoughts are that OMG there are 9 year old kids playing WoW! I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to sue them for stuff like that going on in the game. Pervs are everywhere though.

I would say that the choice on when the right time to introduce your son/daughter to the game is ultimately up to the parent. My father introduced me to UO when I was 9, but only with a very straightforward talk about the internet and the dangers of it. He always emphasized that your identity is your most precious possession and is never worth anything somebody might offer. Even now, many many years later, I carry the same cautiousness he taught that little 9 year old. My account information has only ever been in my or my father's hands, and I only started identifying myself by my true age after I was 'legal.' Other information I saved for a small group of people that had essentially grown up with me, even though we all didn't realize it until much later.
That being said, my father did not introduce my younger siblings to the game until they were each 14. He did so because he felt they were not ready until they were older than when he felt I was ready. It's a personal choice based on what you feel your child is or isn't capable of.
If you're pretty open with your children about what's out there, perhaps it would be wise to sit down with them and explain why you have these restrictions on when they can play, what they can do, etc. I know that as a kid it was a lot easier for me refrain from certain actions when I knew why my parents wanted me to.
If they really want to play and you're uncertain about restrictions to put on your child (this is intended for any parents uncertain and who want a starting place or an idea of what's worked), my parents did it like this:
No video games or TV on school days, and limited hours on weekends given our grades were at a level they felt we were capable of (a C in math for me would be bad because I was just lazy, whereas for my sister a C meant she was trying her very hardest).
NO ELECTRONICS IN OUR ROOM. That included cell phones when my parents finally decided we needed them because of our extracurricular activities. My parents were always afraid that the moment they allowed electronics in our room (excluding a stereo), we would disappear into our respective rooms and remove ourselves from family happenings.
My dad had a system that we could use to "earn" hours, catered to what each of us could do. My brother (9 at the time) earned Halo time mostly through little things like dusting and light cleaning, though he could earn time by working with a football, baseball, or playing soccer with any of us. My sister and I could earn time through running on the treadmill or doing P90x Yoga (boy, was I in shape! My coaches loved me), though the distance-to-time earned conversion on the treadmill was different for me than for my sister.

So far, this system has worked for our family. As the years progressed and I moved off to college, my dad lifted the weekend/holiday time restrictions from my siblings with the stipulation that they had to maintain their grades. My senior of high school year my dad even allowed me on the computer during the school week when he found out I would be graduating Suma and in the top 10% of my graduating class, meaning I'd get automatic admission to almost every college in my state. I'm home for the break between semesters right now, and my siblings and father frequently go into battlegrounds together (they've all moved onto WoW. I maintain my account and my father's two oldest accounts) with all their computers in the same room, screaming instructions at each other and just having family time.
Whatever the case, the moment my dad introduced each of us to the internet, he took that risk that we would be subjected to something that would be inappropriate or that we would make some of the same mistakes other teenagers have made. But he felt we had a good head on our shoulders and always emphasized that if we got uncomfortable in any situation, we should remove ourselves from it immediately and/or call him over. Ultimately it's up to the parent to make that decision of a. whether or not their child is ready and b. am I willing to expose my child to a world that WILL change them?

I think we're all aware of the dangers, but just occasionally it doesn't hurt to be reminded - as long as the warning is heeded without totally derailing the fun of the thread. :)
My little grandson loves UO - as much as he's experienced it. His experience however consists of building houses on test center with granny - repeatedly on the same spot on one of our accounts which he has no idea how to log into by himself.

Nope, for a real new player its bit of a joke. There is literally no info at hand for new players within the game. It doesn't even explain about buying up skills to 40 points. I've seen quite a few (young) players around in haven lately and always spend some time explaining the basics to them.

You made an excellent point. The players guide on the main site http://uo.com/ does not have anthing listed about buying up skill. I know if you go to the quest givers it tells you but nothing on the play guide explains it. Hopefully a dev will catch that and update the site

I'd totally forgotten about the play guide! - I think more in game instructions are needed. Most people I met have just downloaded the client and made a trial and jumped in. Also they need to update the items given to a new player. 1000 gold is bit of a joke these days. OK sure, new players can escort NPCs etc to earn some gold but it's not the most exciting thing to do, and especially if your wanting to get them hooked so they come back for more. Most of them don't even know what a moongate is to even do the NPC quests anyway.

It was only yesterday I was in old haven luring some spell grabbers to train resist spells when I was chatting to another (young) player. He only found new haven because someone showed him, but that person didn't explain about the new player quests! It was quite funny and I've attached my favourite moment in a picture below:

LOL funny pic.

Aye I agree 100o gold dont cut it today in UO. The devs are smarter than this. at Least start them out with 50k. As you can see in this thread its people children that are coming into the game and not people trying to scam it. Trial accounts 1000 gold but actual new paid accounts should get 50k.

I have gotten into the habit of sitting in 'help' channel in chat. I've helped a few players who quite obviously had no idea what they're doing, also Mim Foxglove runs a house for new and returning players, so she's usually in there too.
Hang out in help, it's more convivial than general chat and you can be doing some good instead of listening to trash talk.

Lets break it down a bit for a totally new player.

First skill points to 40 can be purchased (400 gold to 40 points per skill) so that leaves you with 200 gold after raising 2 skills.

Then its off to old haven to fight the zombies to 50 points. Return to claim a pretty much useless (by todays standards) item.

After 50 skill most players will want to gain more after the buzz of getting to 50 so quickly. Where do they go?! New haven mine? Lets be serious, no way.

Back to old haven seems to be the popular choice. Why back here?! - Well its the only place they know about at this stage in the game.

Then they are back in old haven grinding away getting the skill points up killed zombies etc. Maybe get to 60 pretty fast.

Looting all the gold they might be lucky to gather a few thousand coins. I'm sure enough to buy some crap NPC armour though.

By this stage I would think they might be thinking "what's so great about this game then". The first early stages are so boring and the lack of information is a big issue.

I think a few simple tweaks to the new player quests could address this:

1. Start players in either new haven or luna
2. Add in using a moongate to the tutorial part
3. Raise the starting cash
4. Maybe let players choose from either a sorcerers suit (replica) or knights armour set (replica) after defeating some kind of new boss in old haven.
5. Let them join any chat channel and add how to use chat into the tutorial.
6. Basic runebook with charges and some useful places marked already.
7. Give old haven a facelift.

Back to the original post, what a great story. I think for me it would be more like this:

"Ok son, you just stand outside this dungeon chopping wood. When you see me come running out press this hotkey for resurrection".

oh i hear ya.
that is my biggest fear right there.

but they play together and im always in the next room listening to them.
and they have good heads on their shoulders.
but i have already turned off their accounts, UO is only for christmas holidays and maybe summer holidays if we get some crappy weather.

they will have enough time to play online when they are older.
or when they figure out how to turn their wireless antennas back on their laptops.....
Lol, like they don't know that allready ;P

"Is dad in.....

Oh my...I'm glad I wasn't drinking something when I read that, or the screen would've been covered.

Are you planning to add them to the guild? Hehe. Do I get to meet them someday?!?! I really think they need to learn about something called "peace bombs." :)
its ironic that you should say that and then last night look who was running around healing me and peacing all the dragons!
haha!

no no, Tina Small was healing me and peacing dragons last night as i tamed them.

or more accurately she was trying to chase me down while i was running around screaming and dieing as we tamed Greater Dragons on some lag filled hell shard in Korea.
