What does "Clean" refer to when talking about items/item properties?

It means without any negative properties: cursed, brittle, cannot be repaid, -luck.

Not only that but with acceptable related mods.

Jewels would be SSI,HC,DCI with no +skill or +stat.

Weps would be splintering,SSI,DI

while a 20 or more splinter with 40 or more spellefect can be super even with minus luck
same for a 5 ssi or 10 ssi + 4 or 5 stamina if its only mod is -100 luck on it

Clean would include also not having Higher Durability, Lower Requirement or even Nightsite.

So for example, some items I just grabbed:
Bracelet - Steal+5, MR 3, Night Sight, Luck-100, SSI 5
Bracelet - Dex 10, Stam 4, SSI 10
Ring - Magery+5, FCR 1, LMC 4, SSI 5, Cold Resist 5
Ring - Mace 5, Dex 8, MR 1, Luck-100, LMC 8, DI 25
Gargish Cleaver - Splintering 10, Mana Leech 20, Fatigue 20, DCI 10, SSI 15

These are all useless due to too many mods (and for the cleaver, not enough splintering)?

Most people won't even group the negative luck in with those, if the other properties are good enough.

Lower Requirements, Durability & Nightsight are "technically" clean, buy are undesired as properties that fill a slot something better would have fit.
Matching properties isn't a matter of "clean" - it's a matter of "good or bad".

Lythos' opinion on skills and stats is based on their personal preference (and looking for items with 5 or less properties to imbue), not what most people think. Few people I know would think a 6 or higher-property jewel with two complementary +15 skills (and the rest being near max in properties useful for a template) as being "bad", when in most cases those points could be used to divert 30 points from existing skills into others. Similarly, their opinion on weapons seems 100% grounded in PvP.
