Write a commercial for UO

After reading the post about UO being the #8 game of all time, I have to agree with a few of the other posters theree in the opinion that we could usee more "legs" of advertising.

I thought it might be fun for some to come up with advertising. Here is the format:
1- State which media it is designed for (tv, web, billboard, radio etc)
2- Set the scene if needed
3- A two to five sentence "slogan" have to keep it short to keep people's focus

The possibilties could be endless with social media.

Record some great UO footage. Piece it together with some of the slogan added. Have a great commentator voice and add some music to spice it up a bit.


I would suggest youtube, well because thats where it's at. Plus youtube can be used on many many sites.


I am glad you posted this because I was thinking about this the other day for UO when Arenanet had posted such a video.

Commercial format: diverse cross segment of the population talking one at a time answering the announcer's question "what did you do today?"...

I fished up a 236 pound blue marlin... (Sounds normal)
I spent hours decorating my house for the upcoming holiday...(sounds normal)
I killed my neighbor on his front steps and took all his cloths...(sick *******!)
Me and some friends went dragon hunting...(huh??)
Segments would have different people each time describing different aspects of UO ranging from normal RL activities to fantasy activities... Maybe 3 or 4 different versions.

Tag line " Ultima Online... What will you do today? "

Merus, your "commercial" made me laugh out loud. I can't think of a better commercial. This could be visual showing those actual activities (or whatever ones would be chosen - I love the diversity). Maybe somehow throw in the 15th year thing. And the players diverse age range (tween to what's our oldest - 80??). And it can't be assume that the beyond half centurians are the ones that are growing plants and fishing. Some of the meanest bada** PVPers I know are actual women over 50.

There are a couple things that need to be focused on for the advertisement. Customized housing and the ability to select any grouping of skills you want, and play however you want (the sand-box element). If those elements don't work, I don't know what will.

Hit upon all the game features UO has that other games don't have and can't compete against.

Emphasize it's not just the usual hack on monster/gain a level scene game like WoW and D3. It's a world your character lives in, a sandbox. Your not led through a set series of quests, you choose what you want to do.

I like the normal theme that heads off to the fantasy world

Tidy up house - 10 min
Tended to plants - 15 min
Restocked wares in shop - 25 min
Craft new Armor and weapons - 45 min
Grab my Dragon, hop on Orc ship to hunt pirates and merchants - 1 hour

Gather half a dozen guild mates to destroy a demon queen and her hoards of minions, while simultaneously fighting back the murderous player killers that came to reign destruction upon us - worth ever minute!

Ah lets do a noob commercial The 3 noobs/.


One noob goes and kills 10 undead and comes back with some crappy armor and some coin. "This is what I got" as he holds out his bag full of loot and beaming with pride and joy as he is talking to his noobie friends at haven.

Second noob goes out and kills 15 undead and a bird and comes back with some crappy armor and a little more coin and a weapon. He is all smiling and and brags, I out did you and even got this nice dagger. The first noob sneers and the third noob yawns and walks outside Haven gates.

A few mins later the third noob comes back with all this nice armor, weapons, bags of gold and has that legendary glow to him. The other two noobs are in shock and asked : What you kill to get that and be all powerful?"

The third noob answered his felllow noobie question with a smile " I am not a noob but I did stay in the Haven Inn last night.

Nope. Race, creed, colour are all irrelevancies in UO. The only race considerations are human, elf or gargoyle and the only colour red, blue or possibly orange.

you forgot the feathers from that bird he killed that he's going to use to make arrows for his next hunt.

The next step is can anyone give some actual production value to what seems to be our favorite commerical suggestion so far.

Syrus if your reading this what type of work would you like to see done on this? Do we just need the suggestion, if so I think we have come up with a pretty good one ( it may need some fleshing out but all in all it looks good to me, funny, yet enticing ). Or do we need to put together the actual commercial, banner, or whaveter media we decide to run with?

Well, if you want a written advertisement, we could just publish it as a story. For banners, I'm not an artist, but if you have concepts/art/text you'd like added, I could do that. Alternatively, if you want to make a video commercial, but don't want to film/record it yourselves, we might could enlist the help of some TGN directors. I'd just need to give them a script.

Grandma: Heeello? (Sounding very "grandmotherly")
Grandchild: HI grandma! It's (insert name), What did you do today?
Grandma: Oh, hi (child's name), not to much... I cleaned and decorated my house for the holidays.

UO is the only game that keeps me comming back, so yea I like to keep busy =) and promote the game when i can.

The script is about the extent of my expertise, hopefully someone out there can take the idea and run with it. Ill still help with logistics, and any other problems that may arise though.
