Random things I'm surprised we don't have (and should)

GalenKnighthawke

Stratics Legend
1. A Paladin mount. There's a Necromnacer mount, see here and here. There's a Samurai mount, see here. The Swamp Dragon is also in effect a Sampire Mount. There's potential graphics for a Paladin Mount. The Silver Steed. The Charger of the Fallen (which in the EC just appears as a barded horse). Faction Warhorses are also potential graphics, or even potential statistics, for a Paladin Mount. (And indeed as I recall a Charger of the Fallen and a Faction Warhorse have the same graphic in the EC.)

2. On a related note, perhaps there should be another way to achieve a PvM damage absorption other than the barded Swamp Dragon. Perhaps with the new Paladin Mount. Or with a full suit of plate armor. Or combine the two to have a damage absorption that equals that from the Swamp Dragon for those with 0 to 20 Necromancy.

3. A two-handed sword that actually looks like a (western style) sword. Sure we have the under-rated No-Dachi. That looks like a sword but it's an eastern style sword. A lot of the other two-handed sword weapons are axes or stuff like the Crescent Blade. We already have a graphic for a weapon of the style I contemplate. See here and here. Potential stats too! Let us craft those and we'll have at it. It's rather slow so many won't use it, but some will. (Such a sword was depicted on the cover of the Age of Shadows box.) (Semi-related: I've always kinda thought the long scimitars of the Bone Knights or Skeletal Knights were cool-looking, maybe those can be craftable and two-handed and give us three two-handed swords options that look like swords.)

4. A PvP way go get the Honor Virtue. (Arena fighting, perhaps. Got to be good for something besides a title and bragging rights!)

5. A PvM way to get the Justice Virtue. (Raiders at the brigand camp, perhaps, and maybe toss raiders in some other places as well, or from the Ogre Chef in Wrong which currently is a fun and difficult boss without obvious reward.)

I don't think people would object too much to making something like the viking sword 2 handed. A new graphic would be nice though.

Interesting that you gate compassion from escorting prisioners, justice probably more suitable.
Would also make sense to get some justice from the Pirate bounty quests.

There needs to be an introduction of a whole new slew of weapons with difference specials. Claymore, Rapier, Flail etc....

Someone posted an extensive list about a year about regarding weapons that should be in the game.

The other things that come to mind missing from the game: Treasure Map Book, Powerscroll Book. Runebook with more than 16 slots!

I love all the ideas you listed Galen. And by keeping them withing the current framework of the game, they are that much more likely to be pursued. We really should all consider these things when presenting ideas. KISS...

Is it just me, or does the Radiant Scimitar look like it should be 2-handed, and the spellblade look like it should be 1-handed, but someone got the art reversed in ML beta and they never fixed it?

Not just you except I don't think it was the art they would have switched.

The Radiant definitely looks like it could be two-handed. That's not to say it can't be one-handed but it looks like it could be two-handed. Its damage is a little low for a two-hander but that hilt, and that extreme length.....

Even if it were two-handed, however, it wouldn't quite fit what I'm talking about, which is a western-style straight two-hander; a "great sword," like Ice from Game of Thrones or Conan's Sword.

The Spellblade I could see going either way; an accident or deliberately two-handed, the latter because of its strong resemblance to Legolas's sidearm from the Lord of the Rings movies.

This is the only Idea, I "might" disagree with, to me it sounded great, until necromancy was mentioned, I require more clarification on this.

Based on how I understand it: If necromancy were factored in, it would sort of "force" Garoglyes, (Who currently cannot get the pvm-based damage absorption provided by a barded swamp dragon.) to either remove or invest in the necromancy skill. If anything, to me it would make more sense (if necessary for the Pvm-damage absorption be tied to a skill) to tie it to the Parry skill.

That being said It should be based on Armor (they're re-vamping this anyway) and just for the sole fact that gargoyles have no way to currently get the same protection that other races can.

I am all for leveling the playing field in both pvm & pvp, but only if it doesn't effect the diversity that we currently have available, namely character-templates.

Don't understand this....I don't see how it'd effect gargoyles at all since they don't have mounts, but rather fly.

I mentioned Necromancy solely because I couldn't really stand the thought of Sampires, who already have Swamp Dragons, also riding a mount I intend to be reserved for Paladins.

It doesn't matter, though. No UO team has ever liked my ideas enough to steal them, not that I can recall off-hand anyway.

I was referring to the fact gargoyles can't get the damage absorption right now, and hopefully after they armor re-vamp they could.
You mentioned the damage absorption be tied to necromancy 20 and lower (in your OP), which would force a gargoyle to NOT be a sampire, if they wanted to benefit this.

I'm not for sampires being the only template, but I don't want to see them made useless.

I would love to see a flail in the game... several types and styles infact. Along with usable whips. We already have the graphic for them just need to make them an equipable and usable item.

As for the Paladin steed I have to agree I'd love to have one.

I would love to see a way for any character to mark runes in game (without relying in the combination of a set of high magery jewels, magery bonus spellbook and mark scroll).
Easiest way would be to make mark scrolls usable with 0 magery without fail.
Another way would be a bag like bag of sending or wand with charges. Benefit against scrolls: It could be insured, and mark scrolls would still be used for charging this specific item.
Or, if you drop a blank rune into a runebook, it could mark it in current spot.

I'd be incredibly surprised if anything could make Sampires useless short of a major tweaking of older bosses to have the reverse life leach code.

If every other major boss from now till the end of time was given that code, there'd still be the older bosses from which Sampires could derive a comfortable, profitable living.

I somehow doubt there are plans to get the damage absorption to gargoyles, given the advantages of that race, with the ability to run at mounted speed without a control slot, use of the immensely useful Throwing skill, better affinity with the immensely useful Mysticism skill, etc.

At any rate all I had in-mind was, in earlier posts, damage absorption for wearing plate (to my knowledge gargs can't wear plate) and/or, in this post, for use of a Paladin mount, analogous to the swamp dragon (to my knowledge gargs can't ride an animal).

I was trying to think of stuff that seemed off-hand to be comparatively doable without much work. I know I could easily misunderstand what does and does not require a lot of work! But I went with my gut. That #2 of mine, though, in retrospect, likely doesn't quite fit that criteria.

Our Sosarian deserts are pretty small. Maybe no need for such an animal to evolve, and/or need for humanity to domesticate it?

Also our horses seem much heartier than RL ones are, ironically until they are attacked and easily eaten by low-level monsters. But I mean in terms of eating, drinking, territory they can traverse, etc.

Eh.

It's very hard to tell what with the divergent ways people RP time in UO. (I often have to just split the difference with people who use UO's in-game night/day cycle as opposed to RL time.)

But it doesn't strike me as being all-that big compared to our RL deserts. No "Ocean of Fire" race in Malas. (If such a thing ever existed at all IRL, which is I know is disputed.)

Though that desert is big enough that, building off of the presence of that pyramid, Great Lakes's Event Moderators placed right in that very desert the remnants of an ancient civilization, built from a combination of RL Ancient Egypt and the Zealan civilization from Ultima lore.

Maybe the extremely versatile UO llama serves the evolutionary position of the camel in UO?

I can just see teams of llams dragging blocks across the desert to make the pyramid.

Yeah, but if you're going down that path then there's the fact that Sosaria in general is small enough to cross on foot in a matter of minutes. And donut-shaped.

Anyway yeah they should definitely decouple Necro from Chiv. Doing so would be easy, and it's frankly silly that it's currently possible to pile Chiv AND Bushido AND Necro all onto one template.

While I'd love to see new weapons in the game (new two-handed swords, whips, flails, etc), I'd rather see the high res artwork project get completed before pushing for new weapons requiring new artwork and animation sets so that everything can be all in one higher resolution without having the art team have to redo the new artwork as well.

I've suggested in the past that there should be Penalties for having more than one of the Bushido/Chivalry/Necromancy/Ninjitsu skills on a character. Philosophically, they are like the the 4 endpoints of a X/Y axis system. Starting with chivalry, Bushido should be too caught up in personal fame and power for a Paladin, and Ninjas, while traditionally a defender of the common man, tend to be too dishonorable in their methods - and of course Necros are all about personal power and dishonorable deeds. You can then go through each of the others and see how they are in partial or direct opposition, fairly easily.

In one such thread I suggested that, Based on which skill was dominant, casting one of the other 3 types should cause HP, Stamina or Mana loss.

On the sword issue, I just don't think there is an appropriate graphic for a 2 handed sword. All the 2 handed graphics are like both hand on a shaft, rather than a hilt. Like how you swing no-dachi with one hand and the other just kinda trails behind in the air..

We tend to romaticise these ancient forms of disipline. We pick the most appealing traits and appy them to our lives as something to aspire to, or at least make a good movie (Excalibur). Take the Knights Templar for example. Probaby one of the most popular examples of the old ways of knighthood, and likely the base of our modern day concept of knighthood. They were educated, noble, chivalrous, (celebate) and lived by a strict code of conduct. At their peak, they were rivaled in power only by the king and the church. But it wasn't the before mentioned traits the brought them to power. They were also ruthless with a lust for and power and wealth. Lots of darker moments buried in the history books, depending on which books you read, that would lead them to ruin. They were driven underground and formed many secret societies, the most popular (allegedly) being the freemasons.

But enough of the history lesson. The skill system in UO is still somewhat uniuqe to gaming. I think it should be left as free as possible for the user to mix and match as they please. So I'm not in favor of penalties for combining skills. I kind of like the idea of my chiv/necro as a "fallen knight" driven mad by power, possesing the advantages of both dark and light. But I wouldn't mind seeing some new spells and abilities added to chiv/necro that would change abilities based on karma. A new spell like a positive karma consecrate armor cast on yourself, becomes desecrate armor at negative karma when cast on others (or yourself if you please).

I'd also like to see craftable consumable ninja tools added for more versatility to the template. Like tools that weaken resists, blind, slow, poison, increase luck or temporarily incapacitate foes. And the ability to keep a select few stacks tools in an insurable or blessed (no wieght) pouch. You could use these tools without consuming mana and the effects would be more powerful at higher skill.

As for Samurai, I really dont play it to potential at all. I basically use it for the perfection/honor bonus' and lightning strike. The skill does have some cool abilities but I just don't find it interesting. I'd like to see honor/perfection brought to the masses. Split out the luck bonus per level of perfection to 10x tactics or eval... capped at 1000. Then add in a specific bonus for skills like 1% SDI/level of perfection for GM magery/weaving, 1% HCI/level for GM chiv w/positive karma, 1% SSI for GM Necro w/negative karma and the usual bonus for Sam. Still lose 3 levels of perfection if you whiff or for mages, every 5 seconds you arent casting on honored foe.

Finally I'd like to see more use of food in the game. Cut the number of fish steaks you get from rare fish to 1/10th of stone wieght and change fish pie buffs to last 30 minutes (1 hour exceptional). Give us more stat buffing foods like fish pies. Do we still onkly get 1 meat from lobsters and crabs no matter what the wieght? If so I'd like that to be fixed.

One thing that has always bugged me. Picking fruit. there is no way to pick fruit.
the heritage token trees apple and peach you can pick the fruit off those trees.
You can pick grapes as well.
seems like making more resource-giving plants wouldn't be too hard to do, even though there are ways to pick fruit and such. my problem is what do you do with the fruit/food after you get it? I have a stack of every stackable food in the game as if I'm going to one day host a big feast. I never will, I'm just a hoarder.

It's pretty clearly not a sandstorm. It's pretty clearly getting stuck in the actual sand underneath one's feet.

But, still, for balance/fairness reasons gargoyles should be impacted by the effect. But from a purely RP perspective Malag's quite-likely correct on this.

I would like to see some more Barding Armor added into the game (which functions similar to the current Dragon Barding), rather than some change to plate armor or skill effect. It would be nice to have a functional choice other than riding a giant pickle.

Yes - I've been there several thousand times... in this case - I replied directly to MalagAste's question:

They FLY how can the sand effect them???
and a sandstorm is one way that sand can affect things that fly... Especially with those big flappy gargoyle wings wafting the sand all around. :p It also gives a reason that RP'ers could use to explain the slow-effect.

Respectable attempt at back-tracking, I guess, but in context you were rather clearly implying that there was a sandstorm in the Twisted Weald, something which I can recall no actual in-game evidence for.

But, hey.
