Hiding Robes

Friends who were able to watch the video feed from the Fairfax gathering said to me the team had plans to make robes hide-able.

Does anyone else who watched the feed happen to remember any details? (Like when or how.) I watched the recording of the morning session and read the transcript of it and noticed nothing of the sort, so it would likely have been in the afternoon session.

This would go along well with the discussions we've had on plate and other metal armors; little point in this unless one can see the armor without sacrificing effectiveness.

I would love if the team makes a cosmetic system so we can have the looks we want without caring about stats. I don't care if it's another set of comestic gear slots or some sort of alter item function to change a item's appearance.

I miss the pre-AoS times, when gear didn't matter much and you could wear almost anything.

For me definitely style goes over substance. I like my chars dressed nicely and when I have to chose between strong glasses and weak hats, I thake the hats ;-) So, making robes hide-able is a nice idea - best thing, however, would be a transparent pigment...

Making robes hideable doesn't fix a whole lot though. Not only does it just seem weird (Hi! I'm wearing an invisible robe!) but it doesn't make the robe slot available for anything else. Like a dress.

I wear robes to hide the mismatched armor. Why would I hide the robe?

I would be incredibly surprised if such a change, if it happens at all, would force anyone to hide their robes. So ones mis-matched armor may, I should suspect, still be hidden if one wishes.

No, such a change would not be the same as turning a robe into a dress or a robe into a kimono or anything like that.

But, surely, it is a step in the right direction, as greater customization is good as a general rule.

I take it no one remembers what was said in Virginia about this, if anything?

If I have to hide my armor with a plain robe then you players with a fancy smancy stat robe should not be able to hide it.

If you dont want the robe to show, take it off!

You do not" have" to hide your armor. You wish to.

I have 2 characters, one will hide the robe, one will not, if this happens at all.

I had another character until a couple of weeks ago; deliberately in mismatched armor and didn't use a robe on him so said mis-matched armor was visible.

I miss the pre-AoS clothing as well.. Wearing robes helps.. We (my guild) all wear a blue robe on guild hunts.. The way armor is now I shudder to think what some of my guild wears under their robes!

I think allowing crafters to convert an item into another item that uses the same slot would be better and would give crafters something else to do. Perhaps an appropriate name change too (ie: glasses receive an appropriate name change as they are no longer glasses).

How it would apply to armour I am not so certain about because I do not know what kind of armour changes they are considering and depending on those eventual changes, changing a leather item into a chainmail or plate item may create imbalances. But Robe -> Dress for example is no issue. You can do it with vet reward robes already.

You know, dyeing the entire suit the same color does wonders for mismatched armor, as my characters that wear a mix of classic, SE & ML armor types can all attest. I'd really like to be able to show them off without wearing a robe all the time.

And, the best solution for the helm/hat/glasses dilemma is to wear a runic crafted or reforged circlet. You get the better metal resists and higher property minimums of the Smith runics, if a normal runic creation, and access to more powerful runics for reforging. The right reforging selections can dwarf the benefits of the glasses.

Many of us have asked for such a mechanic, but the last time I proposed it, someone posted a picture of an easy button and someone else told me I was a Trammie noob with laughable gear (I had no idea who it was, so how he's seen my characters' gear I can't guess) and who didn't understand Reforging.

No one to my knowledge says this will solve all aesthetic issues in UO, by the way.

Well, the problem is not exactly mis-matching armor-parts, nor the question which head-part to choose - the point is that robes hide 6+ armor parts, of which some look nicely, others are nice to show-off and so on... :D Warriors with Cloaks look...riduculous... They should wear armor which is visible. IMHO...

So, if some people don´t want to run around robe- or cloak-less, which means having lower stats, it would just be nice to make them invisible. Its a RPG, invisible cloaks are arche-types of magical items (e.g. Nibelungen-Saga, Harry Potter and so on). I don´t want to have ALL parts invisible (funny, however, running around naked and being stuffed with arties...).

Remember that the cloak slot is on your back. We're talking about the robe slot, which is on the body.

I am fully aware that several of the items that fit in the robe slot are called cloaks. But I'd hate for someone to read your post and be confused about what slot we were talking about.

I wouldn't say that warriors in robes look ridiculous. I can think of three examples, 2 fictional and 1 historical: The Knights Templar wore white robes at least some of the time (historical), the Alec Guiness character from Star Wars, and the Rutger Hauer character from Ladyhawke.

The point, to my mind, is that it is rather bad that we have to cover up our armor in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. I think that most who care enough about this to want to hide their robes will RP having no robe at all. (Just as those who in effect have to wear glasses for the head slot sometimes RP fighting bare-headed.

Robe-hiding will not solve every aesthetic issue along these lines but it's something and it's a start.

But apparently no one but the friends I've mentioned remembers this being mentioned in Virginia, which probably means they were remembering incorrectly, which probably means that this won't happen, and I've wasted valuable typing.

I remember it being brought up in the question and answer session, but I'm sorry I don't remember the response.

Err, we have a misunderstanding, obviously: I am talking about Cloak of Life, Cloak of Death etc - they are in the robe slot, mate ;-)

I have a friend who plays various games as they come out. I remember him saying that in one of those games (maybe LoTRo, not sure) they had it setup so that you had one "paperdoll" where you equipped the items you wanted to wear that only you could see and another "paperdoll" where you choose how you wanted other people to see your char.

So perhaps a button named "Appearance" or something could be added to the paperdoll.
If so then you could dress your paperdoll anyway you want and then click the "Appearance" button to open a second paperdoll and on that one you can manage your wearings anyway you want others to see you.

Something like that. :)

Could have in the settup options a check box. Robe slot has bracer style look. Anything that can be worn in the robe slot gives all properties but shows on character as bracer on right arm holding item color.

I would MUCH rather have things be able to be "altered" into something more suitable. Like a robe altered to a dress and so on.... So long as it remains in the same slot I see no reason why we can't alter them to be more useful and fashionable. Take that god awful Mempo of Fortune... I absolutely HATE it. It's the ugliest piece of armor there is... but if I want the best of luck suits I am stuck with it. But the thing is hideously ugly. I'd much rather wear any other style of gorget.... though I'd be extremely happy to be able to make it a necklace instead.

That's what I'm talking about..... Hiding a robe is well and good but if what you have on under it is ugly and mismatched the ability to hide the thing isn't that important as being able to alter it.

What I'd REALLY like to see is a new skill added... Or allow Arms Lore to give crafters the "Master Craftsman" ability to alter items. This should allow me to take items and alter them to work on Gargoyles so my Gargoyle could finally wear things like the Cloak of Life or Death which right now they can't ..... would allow you to alter a tunic of fortune to work on a gargoyle... and would allow gargish items to work on humans.... however of course throwing and such would not be useful for humans... but you get my meaning...

Alter the Hat of the Magi to be gargish glasses.... And finally we'd be able to alter things BACK from Gargish... so buying a Gargish Crimson Cincture wouldn't matter if you wanted it for your human.... and I could finally alter my silly Crimson to be a woodland belt.

While such an alteration ability would be nice (examples: sash to tunic or surcoat/tabbard; half apron to belt), please note that it still wouldn't change that as presently constituted one has to have something in the robe slot to achieve maximum effectiveness. And while some paladin/knight types did indeed wear robes, it's not the common association. The common association is armor on top.

I was there, and I seem to remember the response being that they were tired of seeing everyone in robes too, and would be looking at a way to make the robes not as visible.

I can't remember if the other part of this was brought up, namely that regardless of whether robes could be made not to show, that Sashes needed to be moved to the top layer, as Robes (and potentially other items) hide the sashes that have to be clicked on to use their charged abilities, that combined with the ever-present robes, makes those sashes useless.

I wonder, why we cannot carry our newbie leggings and shirts on top of the armor. Looks sometimes much better than that bone leggings combined with whatever. In Lotro we have a separate set of slots for decorative armor which simply modifies your outfit, while keeping your best armor in the slot for battle.
