So yesturday I'm reading threads here on UHall as I do pretty much every day, and I come across a thread titled "Coronation Schedules" which sounds really interesting. So I open it and the first thing I see is the poster's quite insulting comment at the top -
Please believe me when I say that this post (the one you're reading, not the one referred to above) is NOT meant to insult anyone or breed dissention here. My intent is to begin/continue discussion about how all of us (on ALL shards) get information about events that take place in Sosaria. OK?
Now, back to the "Coronation Schedules" thread. The first thing I did was scroll down the list to Pacific and see "Not announced yet" (yes, Pacific is my shard - has been since '98). But I click on the Pacific link anyway and see that it takes me to some place called uoem.net and I say to myself "Who the h*ll is uoem.net and why should I - A
know about this place - or B ever had occasion to go there?" I mean, after all - the poster has referred to me as "damned lazy" because I hadn't gone there to get my news about events on Pacific. I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that if there was news about an in game event on Pacific, that I would see it posted someplace like - oh let me think - the Stratics UO Pacific or the Pacific EM Forum (but what would I know).... I know about Stratics.com and UOForums.com and (finally once again) UO.com, but (my bad) I am completely new to this uoem.net site! Anyway, only a few shards are represented at the uoem.net site, and I'm only mentioning it because it was where the poster said I should have seen the Coronation notice. So let's move on...
So where SHOULD we go every day to see what's happening "in game" ?
I understand that each shard has EM's that are all UNPAID volunteers and that some are much more "involved" than others, and I appreciate all the work that everyone at Stratics does to provide a place where communication can take place between the player base and the Dev's and EM's. I am NOT here to complain - but rather to illustrate how " in game " information tends to "get lost" from time to time, and to see what (if anything) we can ALL do to make things better....
In the end it's up to EA/Mythic to communicate with their CUSTOMERS and Stratics does the best it can to RELAY as much info as possible - BUT - I believe that, in the end, if EA really wants to head-off the continued erosion of the UO player base, then they need to seriously consider what would be BY FAR THE BEST WAY to communicate events - and that would be by introducing some sort of Community Bulletin Board ( in game on each shard ) that we all could recall or walk to every day to see what's happening.
Oh, and please don't tell me about our in game "chat" as a source.... I don't know about the rest of you but I have chat always OFF simply because of all the "kiddy chat" and "spamming" that goes on there. I find it nothing more than distracting at best...
