To set something straight: I don't cheat

Mods, let me know if this is inappropriate, but perhaps this time around we can have a civilized discussion about cheating in general. What gets me is a directly accusation that I must be a cheater, because I won't support a certain invasive solution.

I've fought cheaters -- and lost many times -- since my first week in UO in 1998. Who remembers the Uzi bows, the snooping and multi-stealing from across the screen, the "ghostwalk" before stealth? The one that pissed me off the most was the repeat mana vampire, and next was some bug to make me the aggressor (I was blue, would get attacked by blues, but couldn't give counts). But it was the speedhacking that made me finally give up on PvP several years ago. Viper remembers when our small circle could hold our own against massive numbers, and when we'd get slaughtered by a few untouchables who zipped around.

I'm of the thought that the devs simply won't ban the very detectable cheats. Certainly, there are token efforts from time to time, but when was there anything concrete? What happened to this spreadsheet? Well, every subscription is needed, especially with enough players tolerating the cheating.

I have pondered this many times, and I have come to the conclusion that the GM's only take action against concrete/definitive/easy-to-confirm cheating. The only 3 things I have EVER known anyone to get banned over in this game are: 1. AFK Macroing 2. Certain words being said. (2 that I know of) 3. Illegal house design (pens for animals) <-- dumb one, as they ban the house owned not the offender

Those 3 things are easy to positively confirm, no room for a mistake, so the GM's will take action. Speed hacking on the other hand, you would think there was a way to confirm it, but in 15 years I have never known, or even heard of anyone being banned for it. :(

There's also the human factor. I was once defeated in a tourney by the most infamous speedhacker Viper and I have ever known. The judges claimed they didn't see anything. Now, all three were inexperienced at PvP, and one of the three had a personal grudge against me... If we were lucky to get a GM while someone's speedhacking, would the GM care enough to notice, and would he know enough to tell the difference?

Detecting speedhacking can be done server-side by looking at who's moved too many tiles in the last several seconds, although tracking this can be a big load on the more populated shards. Or, speedhacking can be prevented with a server speed limit, which has been suggested for years.

So, yeah, I'm such a "cheater," aren't I. I will await this individual's apology (can be via PM) but won't hold my breath.

There are no active speedhacks that let you past server side cap. EC runs much faster than CC though.

PS: There is a serverside speed cap and it cant be crosses :-0

Curious, I still see accusations of speedhacking. I had to completely remove myself from the possibility of being victimized, so I can't say I've seen speedhackers recently.

Don't get me started on the EC :), and not even the overall ugliness. It might move faster, but I can't stand the movement graphics.
