is it possible to loot a good armour set from the new dungeons (smame etc... ) that can compete with imbued armour? (non cursed etc...) ?

Possible to build good suit from loot?

It would take forever to get good stuff that's not cursed/brittle/no repairable
best stuff is going to be re-forged and imbued most likely. it is possible to get good armor from the dungeons, but you really need to have high luck and high real life luck. I'm pretty sure the original system's chance of no curses was based independent of in-game luck but the amount of mods are determined by in-game luck. seems to be easier to get nice no-curse lesser arties, of course

Well, i cant afford a good 'whammy/thrower suit so hoping for some lucky drops
if its for a pvm suit than cursed is not a problem, unless your a sissy. try workin through shame or wrong checking the loot as you move further into the dungeon, when ya find something that drops decent gear stay in that area and slaughter. example, i like to hunt for new loot jewelry since its not reforgable yet. So i stick around the end of lvl 1 shame with decent luck on my suit and kill stone elementals. They drop decent 2-3 mod jewels that i can fine tune with imbue. If your character is strong enough already you can try lvl 3 covetous for loot and the artie drops
Brittle is ok if it's metal. Just enhance with dull copper and double the durability. 70/70 goes a long way

It's perfectly possible to make a good armor out of looted neo-shame goods.
Brittle and cannot be repaired sounds bad at first, but since the pieces are so easy to replace, you will find a few spares before the one you're using breaks. And they tend to come with some pretty decent mods!
Cursed isn't that bad either.

DO the best within the means of your game play time and style. Don't try to compete with the Jones's (they cheat burning real cash). When you hunt and craft with little to no outside help the end results are far more then GOOD. Build a heafty ignore list and UO is an endless stream of fun that leads to an ocean of memories. Get some like minded friends that make the river ride times fun.

I don't consider cursed or negative luck minuses, though I've not got anything with them on it yet that wasn't messed up some other way (useless mods, or the other two bad properties.
They should flog the current or former dev who thought it was a good idea to allow Splintering weapon to spawn on "brittle" and "Cannot be Repaired" stuff - and I'm saying that even though I don't PvP (and that's the main use for those weapons)

Have you started a crafter/imbuer character? If not, it will be well worth the effort. I use Shame jewelry to augment my suit, but I mainly find base pieces there which I further imbue. I have zero Shame armor pieces integrated into my suit. It is almost impossible to get a clean one and I won't put a cursed item into my carefully constructed suit unless I have an exact duplicate (which never seems to happen).

No Imbuer char yet but in development (once i get the funds) At the moment im forced to play my tamer as his suit is not as important (cheap lrc suit) as a sammy/whammy suit which can cost 50+ million to make/buy
-Would it be possible to make a decent woodland armour set using a runic saw (say heartwood)? as it may be worth my while doing some quests in the elf village

Yes and no. As usual with runics you might need several until you get a decent suit out of it. If you speak of woodland armour, you should consider that it is possible to reforge them. Only that runic saws are harder to get than runic hammers or sewing kits. Not to forget the need of bark fragments for the armour parts and the randomness if you decide to enhance after reforging + imbuing with heartwood. (Actually those are the suits that are getting really expensive.)
