Advice for returning player:

Hello,

First my apologies for making another of what is possibly a fairly common type of thread.

I last played UO around 2007/8 but after a bout of nostalgia, mainly due to replaying the original Ultima games, I've resubbed again. Obviously a lot has changed, no one I knew is still around etc etc

Anyway, I was hoping someone might be kind enough to perhaps give a run down on the major changes

E.g:
I heard something about some of the legacy dungeons being revamped but can't seem to find out in what way?
What are most people doing nowadays/is there any kind of 'prime time' still?
Any other advice for getting back into it (even if only temporarily) after so long?

Also, back in 2008 there were a couple of guilds around to help/welcome new/returning old players, show them the ropes and so forth, would there happen to still be something similar?

Thank you for any advice anyone can give.

We usually use the help chat channel (and the general chat to a lesser extent) to welcome the new and the returning players. Minevra Foxglove also runs a New Player House, just south of the Trinsic moongate in Trammel. Shame, Wrong and Covetous are revamped: they know have different systems (void pool, champions, prison etc.), the creatures there are tougher too and the loot is generated by a new system called the random magic item generation system, only on these dungeons. The major changes are the Stygian Abyss expansion and the High Seas booster pack, but there are also a lot of minor changes like bard masteries, treasure hunting system, mib loot, clean up Britannia 2011 etc. You can check the changes by reading the publish notes starting from 2008 from here.Welcome back!

Thanks for the response Nimuaq, I'm sort of muddling through as it is.

One further query I would have is, how much of current player activity is in Stygian Abyss/High Seas only areas/content as opposed to earlier content. Last time I played most people were still mainly using Doom/the ML dungeons.

Thanks again.

I can easily say that I see a lot more player activity on revamped dungeons.

The Stygian Abyss dungeon is the largest dungeon in the game, but it is mainly used to farm imbuing ingredients which are the necessary resources needed to add certain properties to items using the Imbuing skill. There are new peerless monsters on certain areas, and the new artifacts that are dropped by the creatures inside these new dungeons are quite useful. The last act of the latest global act, the awakening, needs you to have access to the new facet but most players don't care for that act, especially the competition and the endless (and mindless) grinding aspect of it. The Stygian Abyss expansion is the second favorite expansion of the players according to a recent poll, the first being the Second Age. You need the High Seas booster pack to use one of the new ships, you don't need it to fight Scalis (a new sea monster) or receive an artifact by killing it. If you like fishing though, you will really like the High Seas booster. Not all the recent content is added by the expansions; the treasure hunting and the sunken treasure systems are updated for example which worth checking out.

Welcome back!

I seem to remember your name ... "Haldor" ... hmmm ... rings a bell. Anyhow, as Nimuaq already said, give people a shout on the help channel when you are online and have a question or don't know what to do. There's normally some nice people around helping in any way they can.

So much has changed over the past few years, you'd really need to concentrate on specific things and re-learn what's going on. If you let us know what you like doing in game, I am sure people here can point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the replies/useful information.

Can't say I remember you John II, but I remember the Sosarian Red Cross so, maybe from some event or other.

Yeah, we used to "help" people a lot in dungeons ... and still do, to better or worse *g*
