Hello all,

I just started playing UO again after some time off. I convinced a buddy of mine to start UO so that we could do some champs/peerless. He had never played UO before and started his brand new account last week.

As a side note here I had forgotten how complicated UO is. Try explaining to someone who has never even seen UO ("It looks like Runescape. Did they copy Runescape?") why there are 8 virtues ("What are Virtues?"), but only six of them do something in game ("So they are fundamental to Ultima, but two of them are just blank spots on the wheel thingy?"). Why there are two quest engines ("Uh, ooookay"). Or how odd some of UO's subsystems can be ("So, what do seeds do again...but seeds of renewal don't grow into plants?)

Anyway, he did some reading and decided to start a tamer. I know, I warned him about how long it would take, but he wanted a pet dragon. So...I got him set up and started. We played off and on 3 or 4 days last week and he was having a good time.

On Sunday he was messing around at the rat mini-champs in the Abyss and ended up ressing "the coolest person I have ever met in a game". His words, not mine. So to the person he ressed, who then hung out with him for a bit, talked to him about taming, gave him some artifacts to get started, gave him a pet greater dragon, and loaded him out with 25 million gold, which he has no idea what to buy with, but is totally ecstatic to have, Thank You. You made someones entire UO experience "expletitive AWESOME".

He can now be pk'd in Felucca and will still have a smile from his first experience in UO. It's also good to see that UO players are still as off the wall as they have ever been.

Thanks again mystery person. That was damn cool of you.

I personally have seen many here offer much to same and not want anything more then a smile. I have over the years helped as many as I have crossed paths with with my son leading them off for suits of armor and a few checks to get them going... It's people like that who make UO the game it is. Whenever I have helped out a new player in game my advice has been 'pass it along when you're a vet and you meet a newbie'.

I was just thinking the same Jack, im sure it needs around 200 skill points in taming/lore to be able to transfer a GD to you.
But if its a true story, fair play, i am glad to see there is more people like me in the game, although my help is normally aimed at helping noobs get started in PvP, which cost just as much in gold and more in time and patience

player stats after 1 weeks play? gold,armour, knowledge of game,skills and what,where to buy?, thats dedication, hats off to you guys......
did you not also have to have over GM REAL skills(105 or something) in the disciplines to control pets properly? thought the dragon looks at you funny if not?
playing 2D client at all? you should try the EC client seeing as you just came back, or will that be a problem?

I started a tamer 12 years ago from 0, 12 years on im at 115 taming, i have eaten a 120 scroll and i have +5 animal taming SOT's in the house but never found the need to go to 120 yet. But its been a long and hard slog to get to 115...12 years
But yeah i hear what your saying with advanced knowledge you can go from 0 to 100+ in a week

Meh, I don't personally think it's too helpful giving newbies a load of gold, armor and high-end pets in the long run; half the game should be about working up to earning those things and learning the mechanics whilst doing so. Taming a dragon is an experience in itself. People giving away this stuff have good intentions, but I don't really think it's helpful in the long run.

When I started, a friend of mine gave me a full spellbook and some other minor items and a bit of gold for reagents. He then told me I had to pay him back for the items and sent me out to earn 10,000 gold. I thought that was really harsh at the time, but now I realize exactly why he did it. It was never about the gold, but getting me to actually play the game from the very beginning as a newbie which is one of the most enjoyable times, imo. It took me awhile, but I was very proud to pay him back and a much more accomplished player having done so than if I'd been given a few mil, a house and anything else I wanted for free.

Newbies these days are too spoiled!

Well to do taming these days is not that hard when you can get the right jewelry, tali, and if your lucky to find one a farmers kasa. There is a fast way to build up in a few days to a high enough lvl to get a mare and then in a week I cant see why not a GD. If you put your mind to it an think. Add in a +15 magery spell book and a 70/100% lrc suit and they are all set to get magery up as well.

I have at least 6 tamers on GL's alone... it is possible to get them to 120 in under a week... especially if that is your only character... now I'm still working on many of my tamers but I just go get my .1's once maybe twice a week.... and sometimes just once a month depending on my mood and what other UO things I got going on.

But that is awesome. I enjoy helping new players myself... as well as "returnee's"... always in the hope that a bit of my RP love might rub off a bit and they might be inclined to join our ranks so to speak but generally just to be nice because I remember being helped when I first started.

There are a lot of good people out there on every shard who don't mind helping others. Happend to me too 14 years ago .Gave me a whole suit of bone armor and a nice sword. But i lost it all after 2 days. The person did not mind. and replaced everything again. When we asked what he wanted for it he said nothing, Just help others like i helped you and that is all he wanted. And still today i do the same thing. when people needs help, i just help them for free without anything in return.
Because i know, if i need help there will be players that help me.

Man... takes me back. I spent soooooooo much time getting my tamer to 95 back in like early 99 so I could tame dragons. I must have tamed 100000000000000000000 hell hounds. Boy was it worth it though, they were insane to play with back then.

Well, it's not like we were both starting out totally from scratch. He started a brand new newbie account, but I've been playing UO for.....boy has the time gone by. So we also had a fairly well set up account to work with. In addition, he is a die-hard xbox fps player and has played alot of MMO's. He caught on to basic gameplay very, very quickly.

He started last Tuesday at 50.0 skill in Taming. (I told him to max it when he made his character since it had been such a slog when I had worked it years ago.) I made him a ring/bracelet with +13 to taming/lore/vet. That gave him +26 to each of the three skills. I also made him a 100% LRC suit to train magery so he could recall around on his own and gave him a runebook with taming spots for each level of taming. We'd been messing around basically exploring the game; solen quests, how housing worked, etc. On Sunday morning I talked to him and he was at 54 or 55 taming. When I got home Sunday night at midnight he was still on taming. I think he spent like 12 or 15 hours on Sunday taming. His real skill at that point was 85.something. ~85 + ring/bracelet gives him ~111 taming. I don't know if he can control the dragon once it bonds, but he has it in the stable. As far as I know he didn't use any scrolls of transcendence or alacrity, but I had already told him about powerscrolls so he had purchased a 115 for taming (and I think a 120 for vet). I had given him 1 mil gold to get started, thinking that was way more then he'd ever need. With his gift, he now has about 6 times as much gold as I do. What can you say? *Shrughs*

I have a 110 scroll, but I think my tamer is still at 100.5 or so. I just can't do it...head hurts just thinking about it. I was completely shocked when he told me he was at 85 ALREADY. I was actually substantially jealous. I vaguely remember something about "young" player accounts and increased skill gain....but have no idea if it's still active or how it works. Or maybe the RNG really does hate me.

Anyway, it's good to be back. UO is still a helluva lotta fun. It's also a blast to be chatting with somebody who has never seen any of this stuff before and who's going through that new experience.

UO is definitly not like it was. I did almost all my skills before LRC. When you still had to travel to different vendors to find reagents. I still have all the runes to each mage shop in Felucca. Long before scrolls of transcendence/alacrity. Acutally, I did some of my skills before Trammel....without skill locks. Anybody remember "learn by watching"? Yeah that was fun.

I agree that newbies are definitly spoiled. However, I also wouldn't want somebody new to UO to experience, for instance, saving up for months (It felt like months!) to get 10k gold, buying and placing a brand new small wooden house just outside of Britain, and promptly having some jerk kill them and take the house key, thus losing their home. Wait, is that too specific?

Oh back in the day when I trained my first tamer it took a year to GM then about the same to 120. Though I did RP and do other stuff in game. I also had a farm in RL to run, so gaming for 12 hrs a day just wasn't possible Don't regret the time invested though - I saw someone with a nightmare for the first time, and at the time even being a GM tamer was a really big deal. Every minute was totally worth it, which is why almost all my templates have taming in them even though most were me trying *not* to make a tamer! Have trained up from 0 so many times I should be drooling in my soup lol.

I kinda cringe when players are gifted to the point where they're able to skip all the newbie stuff, because I actually loved all that. I'd have missed out on a lot of fun. Like talking to orcs before realising a) they were killing me and b) they weren't actual players but monsters When you're a newbie so many things are hard for you to tackle, my ex once literally screamed because he met his first dread spider from a treasure hunt spawn and it DP'd him... He couldn't really outrun it on foot so I just have this hilarious memory of him screaming and running through the woods then death, then more screaming and running.

I think if you skip to end game stuff there's a high chance you'll be bored far quicker because you'll find everything else "too easy" and there's nothing harder than what you're fighting. Skipping easy & medium to go to hard cuts out a huge chunk of gameplay. But saying that, I've met and helped a lot of newbies who absolutely want to try novelty stuff that's a bit easy even though they got a leg up at the start. Often with new characters and crazy pet combinations, but there's something great seeing someone realise the fun in that stuff and discover all these dungeons they didn't bother with before. So it's not the gifts or lack of that make a player, it's their attitude instead. Some players will want to try lots of silly fun characters and challenges, others just want to have the uber arties and pwn the spawn. Regardless of whether anyone gives them gifts. Even in the old days before scrolls and such, a lot of players had no interest in training and doing things the more involved way. Out on a boat 8x8 skill after skill, spar with a friend where I was hunting one dungeon after another and I knew so many places that those players never visited I used to be the crazy one who trained magery through gameplay. I figured why waste spells and regs casting on nothing when I could be frying factioners and spawns instead lol. I also met many other new friends and PKs and had so many more experiences. When I did the 8x8 type training on a character I found I had the skill and not the first clue in how to actually use it. Where training through normal play let me mess around with spells and such and figure them out as I went.

That is awesome that you brought someone in and someone else was so nice to him. I agree that is a bit excessive of a gift but helping out his helping out and I cannot knock that.

When I cam back a little under a year ago I had a player named Branmuffin(lost contact with him and would love to find him again, damn you no friends list) and then Cinder help me. They both answered many stupid questions, gave me basic stuff like spell books, showed me were to train in NH, how chiv worked, helped me place and partially buy my first house. All stuff to make catching up on the curve easier but not too easy to were I did not have to work or learn by myself.

It was awesome because they asked for no repayment but cinder moved from his castle and needed a place to keep all his stuff until the new home was ready so I was able to re-pay him and let him crash and my house for a few weeks.
