How do you do it?
And how long does it take for plants to finish?

Bottom right corner button destroys the plant and empties the plot.

After a week or so, you can set the plant to decorative with the top left button, and then top right button.

It takes 9 days for a plant to be able to go into deco mode. If you are after resources, it will take 8 more days to get all of the resources the plant will produce. (a total of 17 days)

If you empty a pot or a garden bed square before the plant is visible in its final state (i.e., days 1-6), you should get the original seed back.

Can you use Fertile Dirt in a garden bed, I don't think so
Yes, i use them all the time.
Keep the Fertile dirt in your backpack. Then after you click the seed and target the garden bed a gump appear asking you if you want to use the dirt.
