G4 Has Ultima Online in Top 100 Video Games of all Time - Also Top Western RPG Before 2000 | Ultima Online Gateway

#58 is not bad, and R.A. Salvatore even mentions UO in the video.

The only surprising thing is that this apparently was actually shown on G4 TV. Typically when I flip it to G4, it's some crappy reality show, Campus PD, etc. Finding video game stuff randomly on G4 is like trying to find Sci-Fi stuff on SyFy, in between ghost shows and wrasslin.

Those wrestlers were impressive though. Think of the things they did to each other and none of them left in an ambulance. They had to have dedicated some serious time and effort into getting into the physical condition they needed to be in and into learning how to do those moves they did without really injuring their opponets or being injured by their opponets. The average guy would have been leaving the ring on a gurney for an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital trying to do some of those manuvers.

They seemed prejudiced against some games made before 2000, especially RPGs. I would have had UO higher, and I would have had Ultima 7 up near WoW. Ultima 7 had a huge influence on a lot of people. WoW deserves #10 simply because it got millions to play MMORPGs that had never played them before. It got people playing video games who don't normally play video games.

Actually they should have had Ultima IV or some of the other earlier Ultimas on there, because those influenced the Japanese RPGs. It's odd to have games on the list that were influenced by the older Ultimas, but not have those Ultimas on there.

These are all time rankings and mostly done by all time sales. I'm not sure anyone plays Diablo II now, but it was huge when it came out and sold tons of copies.

Here is an interesting Wikipedia entry on unit sales across all platforms.

Interesting that D3 is already reported at 6.3M which puts it ahead of some big names already in the PC space (At $60/copy that means $378 Million so far not counting what they are making on the USD auction site). As a side note, I have been pretty much playing it 100% only logging into UO periodically to check vendors. I really need to 'sell/pack' my stuff on UO to shut down an account or two. Problem is that takes time and I'd rather be playing DIII.

I don't get what the big deal is with Shadow of the Colossus or Ico. I played and enjoyed them sure but there were so many things wrong with them especially the controls and camera. That aside, the list is decent I guess, but I don't see Earthbound or Dark Souls on there and I don't see how those could not be on a list that includes other RPGs unless the authors of the list haven't played them.

I think it's almost scary just how many of those games I still own and played. I'm surprised one of the Castlevania games beat out UO. Sad. Though I'll say this Dungeon Keeper isn't on there...... ...... Therefore the list is obviously flawed!

Farmville and U7 for sure. As much as I hate Farmville, it's one of those games that pulls in non-gamers.

I'm torn on which of the Ultimas. The early ones influenced Japanese RPGs. Ultima 7 all but defined what a sand box is for RPGs.

Definitely agree with this. Chrono Trigger or FFVII behind Ms. PacMan?

I think that it would have been useful for them to describe the variables. It seems clear that historical impact was weighted heavily, leading to the inclusion of Pong, Asteroids, etc. However, it was certainly visual impact that won Shadow of the Colossus its spot, as its popularity was pretty understated. Additionally, the impact of storytelling was apparently considered, albeit to a lesser degree, leading to the inclusion of a few RPGs. A clearer outline of the variables and their relative weights would have made the rankings easier to pallet.

Agreed. People do lists like these to generate discussion, not be the final word on the matter. I also usually find some new games to try out from these. Uncharted 2 I still want to try as well as Symphony of the Night.

But really, how could someone like Donkey Kong more than Team Fortress 2 (which isn't even on the list!)?

That is a huge mistake. Especially since SimCity is on everybody's minds due to EA rebooting it and how well it was received earlier this month at E3.

Bioshock was a fun and interesting game with an interesting setting but yes, I was a bit wtf too. =P

It all really depends on the criteria the games are being judged on, and how they're being judged on those.
The list seems to be very subjective, in an "I/we these games" rather than "these games were milestones in gaming history".

Pretty much hacking on creatures is as deep as it gets. It's sort of like Cora but with good graphics, big maps and mini-dungeons.

I bet if UO had some real graphics to compete with those other games it'd be in the top 10!!! I'll take what I can get though, retro graphics and sandbox play beats the rest of the contenders hands down. At least Ultima has the nads to be different and that's something I can seriously respect.

I started to nerd rage on the list, but then decided it only works if you ignore the numbers preceding the game titles. I think you also have to have a pretty open mind. Some of the games have not aged well, so evaluating them against more current games is going to be apples to oranges. I was shocked Sim City wasn't on the list though.

I do like how in UO's video too they're all talking about old UO from their college days and showing video from the T2A era and earlier, and praising it for it's pvp ...they're definitely not talking about UO as it is now but as it was back when they played it.
