There was no sleep to be had at the inn. The walls of the building were thin and she lay there listening to the cries of protesters outside. A beggar woman suddenly appeared at the window, pressing her face against the glass and wailing,“What of the children?!” The entire realm, it seemed, was as full of turmoil and confusion as she was, and if she had to listen to those strident voices much longer, she would most certainly go mad.

As Lucy dashed for the front door, the innkeeper cried, “Ye booked the room for two days, Missy, and we don’t give refunds!”

“Keep the gold,” snapped Lucy. “I don’t care.” She slammed the door behind her and headed straight for the moongate south of town, where she rushed headlong into the pulsing light, crushing a mongbat underfoot in the process.

Lucy wandered from one moongate to another, finally stopping for a short while at Luna. At least there were no protesters there. Nor was there a suitable place to rest… only a seemingly endless array of shops, none of which held any interest for her. Tired, but determined to find some quiet place to sleep, she exited the city gates and ventured into the countryside.

She wandered for hours, crossing bridges, passing through caves, dodging orcs and bandits on unfamiliar roads; and just as she thought she could go no further, just as the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, she saw it… a vast expanse of shimmering sand, and beyond that, a large shallow lake. She tentatively explored the area and discovered no dangerous creatures moving about. It was quiet. It looked deserted. “This is perfect,” she said.

Bone-weary, Lucy spread out her bedroll on the sand. “I may camp here for a while,” she muttered to herself as her eyes began to close. "I may even camp here forever..."

To be continued... maybe...

Or anywhere in Sosaria. I would be happy to help you find a nice spot. I also know some rather nice areas in Ilsh if your really looking to get away.

You guys are too sweet. :) Although I'm actually taking a bit of a break, I've no intention of leaving UO.... and the "Transitions" posts are just my way of establishing some history and setting the stage for Lucy's return as a changed character... and, hopefully, a roleplayed character.

Something has been missing for me in UO these past few years, and I finally realized what it was. In the early years I tried to actually roleplay, but as time wore on there seemed to be fewer opportunities (and fewer players interested in it), so I ended up abandoning the effort. When I come back to regularly play again -- probably in a few more weeks, after I get some RL priorities worked out -- Lucy will essentially be a new experiment. Even if she lives her UO life alone most of the time, I just don't want to use UO like an ordinary chat-room any longer. I want Lucy to really "become" Lucy. I hope this makes sense...

Thankyou for your stories. I do miss the RP a lot of late too. I saw that Kerrs is trying to promote more RP since his return and perhaps maybe the rest of us who are interested could come up with a few ideas to make it flourish again, even if it just starts with some fixed location/event some place where people can mix.

Is there an orphaned goblin roaming the realm, hungry and homeless? Lucy surely would do whatever she could to comfort such a little one, should he (or she) cross her path one day. :)

And thank you, Ashlynn... I'll be back in game before too long, and I'd love to connect with other players seriously interested in roleplay. Just thinking about the possibility is refueling my sense of enthusiasm!

You don't wanna take in a goblin. They all smell of moldy cat litter (like Ozog)!

I'm not sure if the discussion on RP should be continued here or done in a new thread! I don't wanna detract from your story or anything. But those of us who wanna RP need to mass together and who knows, we might drag in or entertain others between their own UO activities! =P

Awww... I love Ozog. And I'm sure I can find a spare clothes pin if anyone needs one for their nose. :)

I love your suggestion for a new thread for an ongoing discussion on roleplay. Please do start it, Ashlynn, and perhaps others will join in and share their thoughts on how we might move forward on this. :)

Ahoy there Lucy, it seems we are ill fated if ever we meet within the realm. For I, Kerrs Holley, be a pirate who sails the seas and pillages and plunder any who cross me path. Be wary lass, us pirates haven't left thee realm and are aiming to make our come back within the next few weeks. Arrr!

While fishing near her lakeside campsite, Lucy noticed a stranger approaching. He was a rough looking fellow. Observing his attire, she guessed he might be a seafaring sort. To her surprise, he stopped a few feet away from her and asked, "Might ye be Lucy Little?"

Puzzled and unsure of his intentions, she nodded and slowly backed away, whereupon he withdrew a scroll from beneath his cloak and offered it to her. "Take it," he said. "It's a missive from my captain."

"Who is your captain?" she asked. "And why would he be sending a message to me?"

The stranger did not answer. He merely smiled, then turned on his heels and departed as quickly as he had come.

The handwriting on the scroll was bold and clumsy and some of the ink had smeared, but the message was quite clear and somewhat disturbing. "Who is Kerrs Holley?" Lucy wondered. A slight chill ran down her spine as the thought occurred to her that he might be a friend of one of the pirates she had killed or captured.

Lucy turned back to her fishing, and whispered into the wind, "Ill fated? Perhaps... or perhaps not, Kerrs Holley. My ship presently lies neglected in an indifferent sea with fish rotting away in its padlocked hold. I'm not even sure if she's fit to salvage now. I've retired my fine bows, and my quivers lie unused and empty in a bank box in Serpent's Hold. Were you and I to cross paths now, I would not lift a finger in self-defense, no matter the provocation. Life has taken a strange turn, and I cannot predict where my new path will take me... nor where your path will lead you."
