WARNING: Be extremely careful transferring with packies

This is a repost seeing as the stratics revert made my post vanish like my packies..


Short recap: around 1:30pm EST on 2/19/2012 I transferred from Catskills to Atlantic with 3 packies full of gold and items. upon claiming the packies from the transfer crate, they showed up for a few seconds and then went *poof* as soon as I said "all follow me".
I tried everything I could to get them back. (log out/in, check stables, go through a gate, check all areas transferred from and to.... the works..) and when I paged a GM, I was given the run around for a good 3-4 minutes, then told to "hold on" a few minutes later I received the canned "I cant retrieve lost items".... I have sent mesanna an email and will be sending her another PM on here seeing as the stratics hiccup dissolved that too.


This is just another warning to any that didnt get to read it before the revert.

Did you happen to purchase this transfer token or was it from the veteran reward shield?

I didn't post this looking for handouts, nor will I accept any. Honestly I still have some gold on Catskills. I just really hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else. Although, it WOULD be really nice of a certain developer to rectify the situation.

Here's the thing. There should be some logged record of what you sent across, and the most important point of keeping that record would be to empower a game admin to help you in this sort of situation. But it's also important to monitor what is happening in character transfers so that the admins know what is going on in their game (like, remember the dupe thing with xfers that got dealt with in I think 2008, but only after a player exposed it? I don't think that had to happen that way).

One would think that since that time, something would have been put into place, if it wasn't there before.

We shouldn't assume the worst up front, but it's worth saying that if noone there can help you, something's wrong.

I am sorry for the loss.

Did you use any "regular" transfer token or did you use a transfer token generated by a Shard Shield ?

I am asking, because Shard Shield transfers do not allow the transfer of loaded pack animals (only whatever is, empty, in stables....).

Where the pack animals bonded ?

If you used regular transfer tokens which, instead, allow the transfer with loaded pack animals I wonder, whether the loss lamented may or not have anything to do with the addition of Shard Shields transfer tokens and their not allowing loaded pack animals to be transferred.

As I posted early on in UHall, I have a concern that any transfer code "may" be shared between Shard Shields and regular transfer tokens transfers and the fact that loaded pack animals are handled differently, worried me that such difference, "if" there was any shared code, might occasionally lead to bugs and unfortunate and painfull losses.

I did not receive any answer and was actually even bashed for being concerned in the first place......

Well, I would imagine that there actually already is since the way I assume that it works, is that code generates a list of items being transferred on Shard A to copy them all and then, reading up that list, paste them on the Shard B where the player is transferring to.........

What is missing, I imagine, is more the ability to verify whether the items after the transfer have or not been deleted.

I would guess that the code can say whether the listed items for the transfer were actually pasted on the landing Shard. But how to verify whether they were deleted after the transfer to support players' claims for their losses to a bug ?

There needs to be a way for Game Masters to not only verify whether the items were or not transferred in the first place, but also that they got actually all accidentally deleted right away upon being transferred to the destination shard.

It was a regular transfer token.

I definitely agree that there should be a way to see what was transferred, and then run some sort of scan to check wether those items still exist in the game. Especially if I can provide a detailed list of the items that were transferred.

Al, if you look in the file folder where you find the UO client program files, you'll also find a text file called "translog." This file contains details on all character transfers you started while logged in at a particular PC. There may be some information in that file for your transfer that you can pass on to EA to help them do some further research into what happened.

Each object that exists in the game world has a unique object identification number. Like, if he'd moved a soulstone, when it was created on the new server it would have been assigned a server-unique object ID at that time. Hopefully their system rolls a log of everything it creates as a result of a transfer, and that log includes object IDs.

I am pretty sure that they don't have logs of objects which insta-delete in the world just for the fun of it. But it wouldn't be right if they didn't have an object-ID-based logfile of what the server transfer created on the destination shard, which means it would be possible to note that absolutely none of those items exist on the server now.

It's not the player's responsibility to find some technical means to prove that his loss happened, and that he's not being a fraud, btw. Verifying that no fraud happened is optional and something which the admins' tools will need to provide to them, if they want that.

But yeah the player placing his trust on the server transfer process working (a paid service they provide, remember) is a big deal.

(Can you imagine if you transferred your main in WoW and you arrived and your bankbox was empty? Have no doubt they'd restore what was lost, but it wouldn't be one of the regular GMs doing it. Something that crazy would have like half a building of specialists being like omg wth just happened with THAT??!).

hey,

I know I sometimes must sound like I'm a malcontent or something, critical of everything the ppl who run this game do. But that's not strictly true. Like, the EC client is to be commended as compared with the classic client (it's multi-threaded, even). UO when it started was a serious turd compared with what it is today. I could write for a while on that point.

I don't like being the one to sound negative all the time. Not when this thing has (somehow?) survived for this long. But on this topic, the integrity of the results of character transfers is really important. I hope nobody lets this guy sit forever, waiting for him to go away.

If he's faking it, they should do like the WoW 'blue' posters would do and drop a hint about it in this thread. If he's not, he's seriously owed that stuff back, and someone would be posting here (either him or whoever) saying that everything was solved and we had a happy customer.

The game records what is being transferred, not what actually arrives. So at the start the pets were faction tagged, at the end of course they wouldn't be.... but they disappeared so there's no telling one way or another now.

I think the best advice we could give to anyone who server transfers would be this.

Upon arrival, do not give any commands to the pack animals when they appear. Unload their items without commanding them, somehow.

(Hopefully it would just drop its backpack contents to the floor of the house if that happens.) And obviously just take one pack animal pet out of the transfer crate at a time and unload it before moving on to the next one.

I think that everyone who utilizes Ultima Online's character transfer service goes into it with the expectation that it is a supported service. It's the nature of what is essentially a paid service that if it does not work properly, the problem can be rectified.

There's certainly no warning when you do a character transfer that if you lose all of your items during some part of the process that they will not be restored.

There should be multiple ways to support a player whose character transfer has gone bad. I could see, for example, restoral of his character/items back on the original server, and working the situation that way.

I personally did a character transfer a few months ago and if I had realized that the character transfer service was unsupported, I would have hung it up right there.

It's striking me as absolutely noobie if nobody can help this guy.

I have done two transfers in the last 72 hours and added extra unbonded and even a few bonded animals, every transfer went well with no issues unpacking pets. I tried unpacking at the inn locations, friended houses, owned houses and banks and couldn't get a packie to poof. Tried with empty and loaded animals. Second toon that I transferred was factioned if it means anything.

Hope you get things sorted out.. sounds like a one off, as I haven't heard of anyone else having issues and have talked to several people in the last few days who have done transfers both with tokens and shields.

she said she sent this to the engineer that has the most experience with character transfers to look into for her, and without verification she cant replace anything..

she also said that there is an issue with doing character transfers when your pack animals are to far away from you and they will not transfer correctly. But mine were right next to me when i transferred and appeared maybe a tile a way when i landed...


im just glad that she is trying to do something about it... i replied and asked her what kind of verification she needs to get my items back and if there was anything i could do to help her verify..

I suspect that this isnt a issue with a xfer but just with packies.

I lost a bonded horse pack on a idoc (house private, i was outside of the house). The house fell, there was alot of ppl with packies and I drop some bags on each packy. When i was going to recall to my home to check the loot i saw that one of my packies was gone. Followers showed 5/5 but he wasnt there. I used the crystal ball of pet summoning, nothing happened. Recalled to my house, did logout/login.. and followers were 4/5. I didnt call a GM, i know what the answer will be.

This is terrible. It's a No-No. The system lacks a fail-safe for one of the following reasons : they either think themselves as Gods that can never go wrong (ha!) or they think about us as toddlers, show us a shiny new toy and we will forget about what we've lost.

I have heard about this kind of trouble before. I was at a Luna idoc on Atl, when Mesanna showed up to watch the show, and some guy claiming to have just been xfered from Europa was exposing his frustration for losing 300+mils in checks after arriving on Atl. Due to the nature of his loss, I guess that had to do with packies aswell.

I have xfered myself probably more than 20 times so far. I have never encountered such a problem, even when the shard I was leaving happened to have a meltdown just when I pressed "Transfer me". After shard was back up, all my stuff was still in the inn.

I do not think there is a specific bug in the xfer system. It could be a packie bug of some sort. Like when a packie is accessed from xfer crate, the server on which it has arrived sees it as a grey spawn animal that has expired and it just *poofs* it. Hell knows.

I can understand hardware hickups and software deep-hidden bugs that result in stuff gone missing. Weird stuff happens even in RL, stuff you cannot explain or just gone wrong, like 2-headed lambs or Paris Hilton. What I cannot understand is the lack of a fail-safe system that could make things right. This certainly should differentiate UO world from RL.

I do have some things I always do before xfering. I feed my packies at least 2 times each, and I always say "all follow me" several times just before using token. Don't know if that helped me stay safe or not, but it brings the peace of mind that I did everything in my power to avoid a disaster. Oh, and I take screenshots of xfered stuff (before and during process) just in case.

Hope this %@%# does not happen to anyone ever again.

I think they should do away with people having to use packies at all. Once you get a transfer token it should open a bank transfer crate that holds 500 items that you load your stuff in this should form a special 'crate' inside your normal bank box. You should be able to open and close this bank transfer crate as any normal container for loading but the transfer MUST be completed within a 48 hr period from when the crate is first created. If the transfer is not completed in the 48 hr time frame then the crate remains but will no longer be a transfer crate and it will make your bank box unable to be used for deposits until the items are removed. After a month the contents would be extinguished to avoid people using them as extra storage.

Each token should have an individual transfer number that is automatically assigned to each transfer crate. Once loaded, it should ask you to generate contents list for you to confirm and save, and then ask what shard you want to go to. When you get to where your going you can go to the bank and your bank transfer will be waiting for you.

The bank transfer 'number' should be able to be used as a reference that can be used by gms. The contents of the departing crate and the received crate should be automatically recorded by the game against the transfer number and placed into a data base that any gm can look into.

Before any item is unpacked you are to check the contents of your crate. If all is OK you can click a button that says 'Contents OK' and begin unpacking. If there is a problem you should call a GM or wait for customer support leaving everything in the arrival shard crate to be checked against the departing shard crate list. Once you click 'contents OK' then EA is no longer liable for missing items.

Surely a bank transfer like this would be much simpler than messing about with 5 pack animals etc. And if this isn't possible then there surely should be a better way than the current system.

happened to me about 1 1/2 months ago had a packy full of 1mil checks transferred from alt to pac when i got to pac it was gone. I figured i released it some how while trying to check/open his pack, i had done this before on my smithy so i figured i released it some how. oh well only gold lost no biggie...

Correct me if I am wrong but transfer tokens are a paid service and the service was not granted. Sounds to me like EA needs to get involved a little deeper into this as that is Fraud in most states.

i fear that ultimately nothing is going to happen.. everything that i transferred is going to be lost forever, and im going to just give up on this game...

it really irks me that i pay $30+ a month for my 3 accounts, and have paid cash for EVERY upgrade and add on pack, yet when something in EA's programming or whatever causes me to lose a significant chunk of my ingame money and items, they cant or wont do a damn thing about it...

its been over a week since this happened, and the only reply i have received thus far makes me feel like im being brushed under the rug in hopes ill go away... pretty sad that those of us whom have been playing since 97' cant get anything done.

Lose stuff because of bugs is horrible, but to be honest i really doubt that someone will return the items to you. There is no way to know if the items really poofed, or if you cashed the checks and converted the gold in new checks again (that means, a new check is created with NEW Id number) or if you transferred the items to another shard. Well on the last one, there are probably logs for each transfer but that means alot of work for a dev to track your items logging in into a shard to check for a item ID then check ALL the transfer logs for the same IDs just to know if you didnt xferred them away.
I believe you, because i lost a bonded packy because of this bug (not referred to a xfer but to a dissapearing packy bug) but if a dev really wants to help you and track most of your items just to know if u are being honest then he will need to spend an entire day on this task.

they honestly could just check for the other items that were in my packies... if those items were all they returned i wouldnt be as upset... i know gold can easily be changed around and such... but the items (a few had sentimental value) would easily be track-able game wide to see if they still existed... one item for sure that would easily be traceable is a whispering rose from "DAMN O S I" i had it forever, and even though its only worth a hundred k at most, it is still one of the top items in my list that im t'd off about losing another being the "hair dye" it was the fist dye i ever got from mel and it happened to be glacial...

I lost an entire character to a botched transfer! hours of cs and all i was given was we will look into the issue!! 1 year later and he still gone!! Oh i dont mind the loss of the character its the 18 full soulstones and 10 or so frags all filled with skills that pisses me off!!

What did you seriously expect? All your items to be replaced on a golden platter? Its EA.. you have two options.. rebuild or leave. Its a sad situation but their concentrated on the current money makes BF3 and SWTOR.

I just read the ToS. They have a special article in there where they deny ANY responsability for this kind of events. Guess they implement that because they have a long history of not caring about such "accidents". Plus they say in ToS that everything in game is EA property, so it was their items that got lost, not yours. You are regarded only as some kind of nanny for those items.

I haven't read the entire thread so if this has already been noted I apologize:

I just did a transfer earlier today and when I logged on the xfer character I got the message saying I have a transfer crate and 7 days to collect. This was in the EC client. Crate appeared empty in legacy mode and I had to switch to container grid view to see the content.

Had me worried for a moment and didn't instill alot of confidence me. I would hate to see someone lose items because their transfer crate is in legacy mode and can't see anything to click in order to reclaim.
