OT Question Log-out fatal ...

Why am I getting thism Fatal message on a character when I log out? Help?

I have had this fatal warning on my old account characters before and figured it was associated with being co-owner of too many houses. This character is a co-owner of nothing.

run client.exe as admin
I cringe a little every time I hear this advice. Never run anything as admin, admin is for administrating your system, not playing games. Not sure on your OS but there should be a way to re-point the folder so that it's somewhere users can actually write to, dont give a buggy game like UO god rights to your system where it can stomp on any file it wants to and potentially take the system with it if it crashes, install the game properly or in a proper place.

Unfortunately raptor Windows vista and up will only allow programs to write/edit to desktop or in specific user folders and the program files folder is not one of them (which happens to be the default installation folder for UO). Running a program as admin simply allows that program (and that program only) to write and edit files outside of the users folders/desktop. I do agree however that if you don't trust the site that you downloaded an exe file from you should never give it admin access... then again you probably shouldn't be downloading from suspect sites to begin with :)

then the installer is in dire need of updating, it's not 1995 anymore, user accounts have no business writing to a system directory (and it's not just about viral infections, though people running inappropriate programs as admin is the #1 cause of that as well) but the numerous other issues that can be caused running at a security level higher than needed, like...say "whoops, sorry game crashed while writing a file and a buffer overflow caused it to write to the wrong file...hope you didn't need that video driver". FYI also there's no need to even download a EXE to become infected, UO's a bit older and unlikely to be a big target but one tiny flaw in it's network protocol is all you'd need to force a remote exploit and run any code you wanted to on the machine, online games with misinformed users running them as admin has made quite the boom in the botnet business.

The real solution, assuming there's no way to re-point just that one folder, is re-install UO wherever is appropriate for normal users to write to in vista/windows 7, not just check "run as admin"

Thanks everyone for suggestions. What I don't understand is I haven't done a thing to change anything .. it just started to happen today for no reason that I can see. When it happened before to Me (Jade of Sonoma) I removed her from being co-owner of too many houses and that fixed it.

This account is a new one that I closed a few years ago. The characters on this account don't co-own anything. I've had no problems since I re-instated the account a few nights ago.

I'll try a few things before I re-install the whole game again. Something is causing this .. and I don't think re-installing the whole game is the answer .. yet.

I never run UO as Administrator.

YAHOO ! I tried a few things, including checking the files In Electronic Arts for this account .. and lo and behold ..

- - there were too many characters in that file. 9 to be exact.

I had deleted three character and made three new ones. The file was showing all the new and deleted characters instead of showing ONLY the allowed 6 Characters for the account.

So, I deleted the deleted character files.

Then I logged in the characters one by one, but got the fatal message again. So I tried logging in and out a few times. Then suddenly, when logging in ALL the characters one by one, the Valentine's Gifts showed up and the Fatal Error didn't show up again. And the UO file showed only 6 characters.

So what happened exactly? There should have been only 6 characters listed in the File. Why did the deleted characters' files stay in that file?
Did the valentine's gift patch have anything to do with it? We'll never know - - unless others experience the same problem.

*just give it a kick and it might work*

Normally that error message is received if by chance you hit the spacebar at the end of the password or user name by mistake (giving it anotherblank letter in all reality). I have had it happen to me a cpl of times. i just go in backspace to beginning & retype the user name & password in making sure i didn't hit the spacebar by mistake & it goes away, (tried it after by hitting the spacebar at end & every time I received the message as you received) Hope this helps
