Hello all, I am joining the UO community and decided to come to Chessy. I am new to UO and have no clue what I am doing :). I am an MMO Vet but I undertsand that UO is different from a lot of the other MMO's. I wanna make an assassin type toon with poisons and a little magic but, have no idea where to start. If anyone on Chessy can hold my hand a bit and point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all. See you in game. Oh and my in game name will be Imortalin. Thanks all.
P.S. Do you recommend UO EC or CC? Thanks...

Although I can't offer any advice on your template (a kind of character I've never played), I'd just like to say, welcome to Chesapeake... it's a friendly shard and I've no doubt you'll receive helpful input from knowledgeable players. As for EC vs. CC, you might want to try out both before you decide which one suits you. It's a little controversial sometimes, since there are steadfast fans in both camps. :)

Again, welcome! :)

I believe the basics for starting a assassin type toon would be to have Ninjitsu and Poisoning which you already spoke of. Most assassin type characters choose the Fencing skill because the Classic tool of the trade is a Dagger and Assassin Spike which requires fencing to use.
(Unless you use a "Use Best Weapon Skill" (UBWS) but we dont just that far yet...

Essay: The Roleplayed Assassin

To begin training, you will need to acquire a few things:
Something to poison: fish steak, apple, any bladed weapon that has infectious strike as a special move, shuriken or fukiya dart.- There is no difference between poisoning a blade or food for skill gain as there used to be in the past.
A way to cure yourself from finger slips: Cure / Greater Cure Potions, Vamp Form, Arch Cure, Cure, Cleanse By Fire, Band aids (healing and anatomy are required for this 60 in each for the lesser poisons 80.1 in each for deadly).
Poison – The proper poison for your skill level.

Ah yes I remember poisoning one of my chrs. many times over tryin to be sorta the same template. lol

Well be sure to fleece lotsa sheep to make cloth to make bandages, bit cheaper than having to fetch cure potions, or at least have the magery too for your backup, to cast cure spells. Cuz um sometimes as ye skill gains in poisoning, well ya ...kill your self, if your curing/healing mechanisms, are a tad too slow or low, or a bit behind the curve from your own poisoning skill. :)

Course one may see that as a good thing, if ya makin a poisoning stabby assassin chr. that ya skill in stabby poisonings, improved so much, that ya assassinated ...yourself. lol

haha

You do get more than one character per account. So ya may also wish to make your 2nd character an alchemist, just so into the future you have a GM alchemist to make ya all the poisons, types of poisons and cure potions, from lessers to greaters to deadly and onward, that your heart may desire to have, for ye stabby poisoner character. :)

Till then there are plenty of us alchemists that can crank out lesser poisons and cures for ya till ya get higher in skill needing the higher potions etc.

I never quite finished my stabby poisoner, got a tad tired of...accidently killin myself ! HAHA

*hands new person lotsa bandages, fish steaks and daggars*... & welcome.

Good luck with it all ! :)

Oh and yeh since you are new in general to Ultima Online, first thing I suggest is go explore ALL of it, it's a big world. And also go get DEAD !

Find something or someone that makes you a dead man walking.
Some folks never get used to becoming killed or dead via monsters or other players and the first time they see the UO world in hues of gray as a dead person they about go into shock. SEE IT AS PART OF THE FUN OF UO !

So go explore and go get dead !
And while ye are dead, explore even more, cuz well nothing can kill a dead man walking anyhow ! I always have had a chr. named *Hughes of Gray* ! lol
We all see UO in 'hues of gray', sooner or later ya know, so get that done first. DIE ! EXPLORE !

Then nothing will bother ya ever, at all !

HI! Welcome to Chessy (and UO!). Hopefully you enjoy the game and find that Chessy is the best community around (good pick, if you ask me). As for EC vs CC, you should try them both, but EC is a fundamentally better client, though the CC has its advantages too. I was a diehard CC guy for years and recently tried the EC just for fun and, actually, I switched. I learned how to make cart work and everything and changed over to use the EC perminately. I can set up a players macros in less than 5 minutes, where as in CC it might take 20 or 30 switching back and forth from UOAssist to the game getting everything set. Enough on that.

You say you want to make a poisoner assassin... so I am assuming that you want to PvP. The PvP community is difficult because most people there have been doing it for years and years and years and know every trick. However, the assassin is a good template to rock on as you start and if you are alone. Gareth makes a good point with the fencing for poisoning, however, nowdays with imbuing, you can rock out with swordsmanship just as easily. The butcher's knife allows you to poison and disarm without changing weapons. If you are a poison assassin, you'll want to poison and disarm a LOT. I would also recommend the skills of ninjitsu, tactics, anatomy, healing, hiding, and stealth. Though resist is a nice still too. I know some ninjas like to have both a melee and long range weapons skill to chase down the runners.

Welcome to chessy! Glad to see new players. If you want any help or need anything, please PM me and I'll do what I can. It's hard to start out in this game. It is SOOOO big with SOOOOO much stuff that it can be overwhelming for sure. But it can be managed.

Oh, also, there are tons of player run townships floating around and most are pretty open for new members and the like. You could probably find a community to join if that's your thing. Oh, Luna bank (Malas, Luna at any moongate) is the commerce and social hub of the land.

OK, I lost myself in what I was saying. Stratics is a great source of information, but kind of hard to navigate. If you have a specific question on a certain thing, UOGuide is a wiki site that is extrememly helpful for quick reference.

Have fun! Don't venture into fel too soon, people enjoy adding to their murder counts. :)
