seems a bit silly to post a link to the guild wars 2 forum that basicly has nothing but a link to joystiq, may as well directly post the link here The Perfect Ten: Best MMO theme songs (part two) | Massively

Spoiler Alert: "Stones" form UO is #7

Honest question though, last I played the only place I remember you could still hear stones was from dawn's music box, as it had been otherwise removed from the game. Is there anywhere else in game you can still hear it now?

Well if they are going to use the part 2 song of UO, it will be the num 100 :D
Basically the old UO midi theme can be played by a mutilated blind man by pressing 2 buttons on a piano

However considering the other songs in the list of that guy, the old UO song it's not that bad afterall... :p

blasphemous fiend...thou hast lost an eighth!

seriously though, if you thought the midi version of the old UO songs sounded bad it was either
1. your sound card sucked and failed at midi (common with cheap sound cards, they'd use samples that sounded terrible and since midi is sample based...welll...it would make the song sound terrible)
2. your ears need to be checked

I liked the midi versions of the songs far better than the later versions, but honestly, this random dude on a piano did my favorite version Stones (from the game "Ultima" by Origin Inc) - YouTube

it's just a midi... you can appreciate the idea, but without proper instruments is just like a raw drawing in a piece of paper...

My sound card is pretty good, but you can't deny that it could be improved.... this for example is a better work than the basic midi:
Brad Venable singing Ultima Online Stones - YouTube

Maybe in the future I could pay my composer for a decent version to include into the UI package, but for now I still not heard the perfect version of stones :p

Sorry that it offended you. I did not have to post this in Uhall at all but as a former UO player I thought it was nice that UO was in at #7. I also had just put that post up on my portal and copied my link since I was rushing a bit on other things that was GW2 related. So I took a little of my time to make the post here.

I do support other games here on Stratics. Next time I will just send the information to the UO staff here on Stratics.

Please accept my apology of trying to give some support to UO and the community.

You were really just trying to get some people to visit your GW2 site.

you're right, a midi is the blueprint for the song, it's your sound card's job to realize it, if you dont have proper soundfonts or proper midi hardware (preferrably midi hardware) you won't hear the full range of the song.

Unfortunately I don't have the appropriate soundfont to do it as it "should" sound (the old soundblaster midi, if anyone has a old SB Live or Audigy 1/2 install disk I would appreciate if you could PM me, my disk is long gone but I could really use the .sf2 file from that disk) so I rendered it with the soundfonts that I do have, only two really stood out, all the others basicly sounded the same and my casio ones didn't have all the proper notes so half the song was missing (I guess stones used some instrument channels that not all patchsets/soundfonts have), but there they are for anyone who never heard the old versions of the songs and don't have the midi support to even try.

@Zosimus There was no offense, I just thought it silly to post a link that went to a page with nothing but another link to click, just save everyone the time of the extra clickthroughs and pageloads.

Gwenno's Memorial in Ilshenar plays one of the older versions of "Stones", if I remember correctly, though it can be hard to sit there and listen when a lich lord wanders into the memorial from the river ford...

it's not a problem of sound font, I just prefer the finished product :D

I used to listen midis on year 80-90s before mp3 was invented, and I had a big collection of every kind :p
Now you can put the midi inside a pro software and make something that worth to listen (with real instruments) :D
