The "curse" of being bored

Guardian KX

I love the major concern over cursed items.

I go to insurance shards and see the most stupid stuff insured. Even normal sandies and GM made robes. These players on these shards lose one item and there ready to quit the game. One guy sitting at the bank tossed a totally sweet dagger in his hands for a sec then took it off. I asked him "Why don't you use that". His responce was he was afraid to lose it because it was cursed. Was he a pvper...nope. did he ever leave Trammel... almost never was his responce.

Sit at the bank doing nothing because you have it all. Absolutely no motivation to get ANYTHING.

If YOU as a person were to take ALL the insurance off your items do you think the game would be a bit more exciting?

When your at the bank bored off your bunz, log out, log back in, and choose the shard Siege P. Over here we USE the stuff that most you think is garbage. That means we use BETTER stuff with HIGHER mods because we dont CARE if you take it away and force us to grab ANOTHER high lvl throwaway. I mean seriously folks... You hide in the Barneyland side of the world and STILL insure all that stuff. YOU INSURE ITEMS THAT CANT BE TAKEN ANYWAY. *Sheesh*

Come one and come all. You being here will give you the exciting rush you might need. It'll also take some of the heat off me from the MASSIVE 3 (yes 3) PK's we have running around the shard. I've lost so much stuff being killed 2 times in the last 4 months. And when your done, you can log back to your normal shard and continue to sit there being bored with all your semi uber insured pixel poop.

Playing a game where you never lose anything and the worst to can do is log in general chat and "upset" everyone... so much awesome fun huh. Siege at least offers you the "put up or shut up" concept. The guy that upset you in general chat here means you can remember the name and DO something about it later (if you can find him that is).

Just go back to the safety of "never lose anything but empty pots" world and don't bother with the flame posts.

Siege Welcomes You. Take a chance and have some excitement mate.

Good Day

So you basically bury people under a pile of insults then ask them to join your shard? I wouldn't call that a neat strategy.

Sorry the truth hurts.

The insult only comes if it hits home. Otherwize it wouldn't have applied to you and you'd just moved on to the next "Crazy" post.

Id suggest you come to Siege and make me eat my words. Either that or we can stand in Trammel like your (most likely) used to and glare angerly at each other.

Here's what puzzles me: why is it always the felucca side of this game that asks to trammel to come and play with it? Why trammel enjoys crafting, collecting, fighting monsters and everything else while felucca grieves and grieves and grieves?

Well when i started playing uo many years ago,i started on SP..i also remember farming ettins and brigans north of the brit T i would make 10k a day at ettins and was having a great day. If i got past the T w/out being killed was a good day..i also remember having my first kill at brit cemetary, defending myself and chugging pots to stay alive. Im now on Catskills and listening to the pk's on gen chat make me lmao, i would guess that in a classic shard they would never last....Ah the memories....

As I remember your a tamer... I'd LOVE you to come over and be reminded of who King Edward was (me).

Id love anyone to come over reguardless. Im not going to give the "willing to do anything in the world to get you started" speech. ANYONE can get a foothold here and live right out of the bank. Our chat channel is more mature as well.

As far as Trammel goes, im not familiar with it. We don't have it here. What I have seen of it tho is mass people logged in at a bank and AFK. Again not familiar with this action either.

I often wonder how people manage to get bored in this game. I don't know the answer but I am glad I don't need to leave Trammel to stay interested. I'm guessing that bored people have a narrow range of interests. There is so much to do in this game and it is always changing. I have never been close to finishing the game.

Not exactly a glowing endorsement of a shard.

I'm going to guess that the efficacy of this thread in bringing people to Siege is going to be somewhere around nil.

Edit: I will say that it will make for a fun read to liven up the board which has been a bit on the dull side this week, though.

Because they have driven off 99% of the base they used to play with...

With the insults, the childish behavior, and constant smack talk.

Because more often than not it's the Fel players who use cheats and then try to say how "bad" they are... and how good they are... when they epically fail from the start by cheating.

Because they have run out of ways to get newbs to come before the slaughter because we all know just how fun it is to kill rabbits in one shot.

Because they have tried numerous times and even convinced the DEV's that "candy" should be placed in Fel so that people will go there... knowing full well that it will NOT attract new people to Fel. The only thing that comes from putting all the bonus stuff in Fel is that the DEV's line the pockets of the largest Zerg guilds who use every cheat and hack they can to keep a strangle hold on the economy of their shard... Selling items for insane amounts of gold only to turn around and sell the gold for RL cash.

Because they want what you have but are too busy running around empty lands trying to find an easy target to take it from and don't want to invest in a PvM character because they find the challenge of killing Monsters to be boring... or because they can't kill the monsters and would rather take the items from those who can.

They want you to believe that it's fun to be ganked and have everything you worked hard to obtain taken from you... as if this would actually make the game more enjoyable somehow.

What's funny is that I have a character that does most of it's gameplay in Fel... and the character(s) of mine that die the most do so... in Trammel. The Fel character has actually been completely safe AND taking full advantage of the Fel resource differences.

I guess I find this paradoxical at best.

I am not bored and I only go to Fel to mine. I live in Trammel and have a great time.

You live on Siege. You have a great time, we are told.

You tell us what a bad time we must be having playing the game that we pay for the way we enjoy it.

I don't see a lot of posts trying to convert current Siege players to Prodo Shards. I see some posts, many far more conducive than yours, attempting, to enticing players to try Siege rather than the other way around.

I enjoy playing UO the way I play it. You might not like the way I play the game, but see...that makes not one whit of difference to me, at all. I don't play UO to impress anyone, or conform to what others think I should do to have fun.

I have fun precisely the way I like to have fun.

I started UO in August of 1997. I am quite familiar with all things PKish. I have a char on Siege as well. I just don't play there, or in Fel, because I personally don't enjoy non-consensual PvP at all.

That's just me. You obviously really like that type of game play, and I say Go For It!!

I will not try to get you to insure things. I will not try to get you to only fight monsters and stop doing PvP. I am not sure why you feel the need to do this exact thing with folks who might not enjoy PvP as much as you don't enjoy straight PvM.

I am betting that if you weren't so bored on Siege that you would not feel the need to come on these forums and bash the play styles of others to try and bully people that currently enjoy a play style that you do not enjoy to coming to Siege for "Real" excitement.

That is my bet.

But I do wish you the best in your current campaign to use dunning language and insulting commentary to try and coerce others to try Siege.

I guess a person has to throw enough stuff against the wall to find that which will sticketh.

I think the OP is saying he want people to play on Siege so there is people to do stuff with there. I don't think he is downing anyones play style but asking people to give SP a chance.
I think it is the best shard we have but I rarely play there anymore since most of my friends play other shards, plus I gave my house up on SP due to that.
If more people played there I would return in a heart beat.
Plus I think EM Drosselmeyer left so we get left without a EM again :(

Simple, that sir is call burning murder counts, while off at work or errands or the gym, or whatever.

As for Siege, I have 3 accounts with fully developed characters there. I actually got bored with Siege and left for the prodo shards, to have people to play with.

There are those that care about Siege and more power to them, they have a unique shard and they like it that way. Sometimes in the past it had gotten a bit out of hand in a spam sense on the boards but that has effectively been handled.

Again, the OP simply isn't an effective "siren's call" for the shard, and I can only imagine that the more reasonable Siege players have to be shaking their heads in bewilderment over it.

I took the liberty of not quoting parts of your post that I perceive as insulting to non-Seige players. :)

Those who need an "exciting rush" generally can find it anywhere in UO, whether on Seige or in Fel or Trammel (unless, by "exciting rush", you are making a specific reference to killing or being killed by another player). Speaking only for myself, I never liked PvP and never cared much for the "exciting rush" I used to get when losing stuff I preferred to keep back in '98 when I first started.

I guess I'll just close with, "Thank you, but no thanks, and have a nice evening."

My shard is still having to deal with this ideaology. The one that people like you want to push down anyones throat. The idea that everyone there is a trash talking PvP Red dry looting killer. If you'd read the part of 3 (yes 3) reds running rampent around the shard you'd got the clue. You want to keep people on YOUR shard so bad that you give everyone this view of "gank fest city 24/7". 5 years ago yes, today no.

You ever listen in on General Chat on a prodo shard? I'll give you the three main topics at any given time:

1. Circle at Brit
2. Selling/Buying X
3. PvP e-peen waving (generally involving personal preening, gaoding into fighting and accusations of cheating/lame gameplay)

I think there have been aspects of Siege that have been harmed in the course of UO development (and even aspects of Fel itself), but that's something to be brought up to the devs issue by issue, not by attacking people who play a PvM/PvE/Crafting based UO on the prodo shards.

This was a totally truthful statement.

Bottom line is that all us long term Vets on ALL shard are set in our ways. Your Kings on your shards. On all our shards you own it all. Your view of exciting is maybe getting PK'd and thats it. The thought of starting with nothing and killing mongbats to make a foothold scares the hell out of most people. Working a month to get the skills up without a castle to log into baffels the common Vet.

Siege has a very mature population. A very very small population. A very tight and helpful community. Lots of room for housing.

I'm in no way pushing the PvP aspect, although yes this shard is geared that way only because YOUR NEVER SAFE. The only true PvP that happens is mostly requested in chat. Last night someone died in Shame and asked for help. One large guild leader and one very skilled RED PvPer ran down, rez'd him, and got him all is stuff back by dragging spawn away from his body.

All im asking is for the common or bored man to give us a try.

I am no PK and have only the most rudimentary pvp skills. I am further disadvantaged by a lethal combination of a rotten ISP and pinging from the UK to Siege. Despite all these things, I love Siege.

Seems to me the OP has just mentioned a few of the things folks are complaining about (eg, boredom, childish insults in the general chat, etc) and has observed folks on other shards who seem to be standing around doing nothing much. Perhaps they're bored, perhaps not.

Here's what I know about Siege:-

Siege encourages community.

Good, reliable crafters are not just valued, but revered.

Siege folk are often rough & ready. Knowing what it takes to adjust to Siege, there are damn few who will refuse to extend a hand in friendship, and point you in the direction of NEW (a guild specifically for helping folks new to the shard).

Amongst its playerbase, Siege contains some rare, beautiful gems. Here is where you learn that gems are gems regardless of whether they're shiny or polished, and you discover real gems have no need of gawdy displays of wealth.

I'm not in game nearly as much as I'd like to be, but that's not Siege's fault. More than once, time spent on Siege has been enough to stop me hitting the "cancel subscription" buttons.

Once you get a feel for Siege, it feels like... coming home.

The Smithing BOD system is only one of the various facets of the game I play. I've played UO for 14 years now (Jan 1 1998 - now). I played Siege when it was Siege Test, even can tell you why it was wiped originally, and for a time had one of the earliest houses on Siege (long since decayed). Since my main combat style is melee, when they changed over to ROT skill gain, my character was effectively left behind, so I went back to my main shard.

So yes, I've tried Siege, it didn't work for me, and now it would work even less as unless I'm willing to add another account JUST for a Siege house, I would not have access to one.

I made a character on Seige once. During my first half-hour there, someone noticed me and promptly killed me. Oddly enough, not a word passed between us before or after the encounter. My little ghost returned to the inn and logged off with no doubt whatsoever that Seige was not her cup of tea. I simply cannot imagine why I should ever want to start a character there again.

Many would say UO died with AOS, hen. It didn't. For better or worse, it just changed. Folks simply adapted and/or moved on to pastures new.

Sadly, none of us old farts can recapture the wonder we felt while we were discovering UO. In all honesty, that's what I miss, that feeling of wonder and amazement.

Recapturing something irreplaceable is not actually what Siege is about, well, not to me, at least.

It's not wtfpwning a peerless solo...Sometimes it's just something as simple & satisfying as dodging that air ellie you know will pwn your newbie-butt while you're shearing sheep to spin your own wool and hoping your scissors last long enough to cut the cloth for bandies.

Siege is in the kindness of strangers. It's in the room with secures you're offered by someone you know in passing just to say hello to on another shard.

It's in the lrc suit given to you so you can train your magery and the runebooks & gate scrolls so you can get around.

Siege is the reds who note your NEW tag, and talk peacefully with you awhile to offer tips on getting by and getting ahead. More than one red gave me yet more training items and daggers so I could continue harvesting stuff to sell to players who would actually buy it from me - NOT so much because they needed it, but because it helps newbies get started.

My last "Woot! I did it!" moment was nothing more elaborate than taming a pair of half decent bake kits. All the while I was half hoping the local pk wouldn't log in right then, and half hoping he would if only for the sheer thrill of the chase. He didn't, but the mere possibility that he might was excitement enough.

But then, perhaps I'm just far too easily amused. It's certainly been suggested before.

I didn't say they all do..... What I said was MORE OFTEN THAN NOT.

So if you are one of those that aren't then you are in the Minority.

I've met very, very few who didn't cheat or use some sort of illegal 3rd party program.... and/or the latest Gimplate. Or that didn't run in one of the major Zerg guilds.

Most of those that don't run alone...

I have at least 8 characters on Siege ... none of them worth a woot and I don't care... other than getting my gifts there regularly I spent very little time on Siege.... first time I myself logged in there the character that was on that shard (which I didn't make it was a friends old account)... was somewhere off in the woods near Sacrifice in Illsh... before I could reach the moongate I was promptly killed and left for dead with nothing but a deathrobe... without so much as a "Hi how do you do.".....

I have zero desire to even attempt to do anything there. Besides I have several nice homes on my own shard where I spend 99% of my time and energy... I've no time to waste on other shards that I am not going to play on but once in a blue moon.

The OP said there's 3 PKs on Siege. And I know for a fact it's a dead shard anyway. Well, that's a huge problem because I like to log on and PvP sometimes. I think I will stick around on great lakes with my varied templates, end-game gear to compliment them, and enough resources to continue PvPing until I've had my fill for the evening.

Gosh, what an unexciting miserable existence. :lick:

Guardian KX is possibly not the best ambassador for Siege, his diplomatic skills are slightly lacking.
Siege is - a simpler place, no need to chase that 'uber' outfit, crafted and imbued does just fine.
General chat is just that, general chat. Very rarely filled with chest beating pvpers.
NPCs don't sell boards, ingots, arrows etc - so crafters have that market.
Yes, I got killed within hours of arriving, but I rarely get killed more than once per month now that I know my way around.
If I do die, so what? I just toddle off home and put on my spare suit that I keep for such an eventuality and begin replacing the spare. That's how things used to work before insurance, remember? You had a spare suit, or sometimes 2. It wasn't really a big problem.
The thing I hate about dying on other shards, in Fel, is the gloating over your body and the trash talk to your ghost - Siege players don't do that.

However, Siege aside, on the topic of boredom, it is my belief that those people who are bored with the game are those who have forgotten that in a sandbox it is your own imagination that sets your goals and 'entertains' you. Some people fall into the mindset that if there's no Dev or EM run event in progress there is nothing to do. I can find more things to do in UO than I can find time to do them.

I created some characters on Siege about four months back. I was originally held back from trying Siege due to housing. I was offered a place to hang my hat while I tried it and I got myself a foothold.

In my 3 months I have been PKed zero times. In fact, I've only seen one red and that was in a guard zone (Zento). IMO, Siege is feeling the effects of a small population more than the other prodo shards. It was designed for people to interact with each other to trade for basic resources. With the population down, the economy is not nearly as vibrant as it once was. In General Chat, there is no smack talk. I find the chat discussion helpful in most cases, which is a far cry better than other shards.

When it comes down to it, PvP is not the issue for me. I like to PvM to the extreme. I build intricate templates and like to test gear. I run solo peerless, champs, and other bosses. I die fair bit (ok, a lot), but it has little to do with PKs. I found that I really like insurance because I have no fear trying to master Slasher or Corgul alone with a template and suit I devised. I get great enjoyment from the game playing this way. On Siege, I found myself unwilling to challenege peerless and other bosses because I just don't want to loose my gear when the Mob loots my corpse. Not to mention the one character limitation per account did not fit with my play style. So that was my experience. I'm still slowly advancing my Siege characters but I think I will continue playing my prodo shard most. It is very possible to enjoy UO on a prodo shard; you don't need an insurance-free environment to have fun. So I completely disagree with Guardian KX's initial argument. But I recommend others try the Siege and see what you think.

I played prodo for years brefore getting pissed at duping and went to Siege...and loved it.

Met some of the nicest and most mature people and joined a great guild. This was about 4 yars ago. It was great, funny thing is all the pvpers wore leet pvp suits...crimmy, int boots all the goodies. took my a bit to get up to speed but in 4 weeks I was off and running, wow great fun!

After 2 years I noticed less and less people, over the last year I farmed and worked skills as pvp we simply gone. One can only amass so much silver and gold befor it starts to suck.

The harcore base everyone speaks of have one thing in common hide/stealth..it wrecked the shard. You can stand at the luna bank for hours and see no one, they are there ...just hidden. They will say they adapted i say they wrecked Siege.

Been back on Atl for 16 months now and loving UO!

To the OP...Siege is dead and will remain dead...it is 25 people who sit in their homes and talk in GC, not that there is anything wrong with that. I like those people and they are getting what they need from UO.

Just dont come here and lie about Siege..last year as a joke I dropped a Million gold check in front of Krystals house...it sat there for 4 hours...enough said.

In all fairness, that piece of green grass is only used by PvPers fighting TnT and the occasional IDOC hunter. And with TnT gone, four hours sounds reasonable...

yes but still main ave in luna and it sits there...speaks volumes.
In the end I tried to make siege work, gave away million of gold and items, hell I gave 10 million to Ginsu when he lost his SS, gave Death 3 million when he made a comeback and many many million more, gave kelmo 5 mil for asty's luna house.
When I left i gave my luna house to Crzin as i thought she was vert active, I am not a Siege hater, just dont like the come play here we have a great shard posts...we all know just how bad it is.

I said it two years ago "in the end Diablo and Kelmo will fight over the last idoc"

If I spend my time on a fel/seige ruleset and occasionally relax in trammel. To a fel/seige player I am a trammy and looked down upon.

But if I spend my time in a trammel ruleset and spend time as well in a fel/seige ruleset I am just another player...

Are you seeing what drove me away?

Really now. Letting your ego be tied to a video game?

The original post is almost a parody of how bad a 'come to Siege' post could be.
