I'd steer clear of these for a while. Apparently they have some decay timer issues. Mine was refreshed Tuesday night. Here we are Sunday morning(thats 5 days), and my boat cannot be located.

Paged a GM, he told me to go to a harbormaster as the runes can get bugged sometimes. Harbormaster couldn't find my boat. GM says he doesn't show my char owning a boat. TONS of fish/MIBS/nets/etc gone.(oh, and a $10+ boat).

Thanks alot, EA. You've frozen my account age but accelerated my boat's age. Nice job.

I think you'll find that it decayed on time...

You refreshed it on Tuesday so it would decay as follows:

Tuesday - Like New/Slightly Worn
Wendesday - Somewhat Worn
Thursday - Fairly Worn
Friday - Greatly Worn
Sat - IDOC

If you had gone to your boat on sat morning instead it would have still been there. Sorry dude, but you misjudged the timer there. Nothing to do with the Dev's or bugs.

It did not decay on time. I refresh mine every saturday and its never past fairly worn. So it is either a bug or he refreshed before serverdown/servercrash so that it didnt save.

Anyways .. stuff that we pay for in extra $ should be linked to the account and should only start to decay when the account goes inactive. A system similar to the housing system should be in place!

Personally, I think that a ship which cost real money to buy should not decay as long as the account is active, period.

Just my opinion, but that's how I see it.
I agree.

I left a galleon unrefreshed until it sank back in the early days of High Seas. It went down at midnight at the end of the 13th day. It spends three days at each of the four decay stages except for the last which is just one day. Someone posted the info on UOGuide at Boats - UOGuide, the Ultima Online encyclopedia The info is near the bottom of the page under Ship Refreshing.

I refresh my ships as part of a sunday morning routine of in game chores and they are at Fairly Worn after seven days unrefreshed.

I always assumed it was a 5 day decay, or at lest it should be a 5 day decay. I would check all your boats in this case then incase it should be 5 days to decay and that the bug that caused it to last longer has been fixed!

It's not just the Britanian ship with the decay bug...

I read the Dev post on that ship and it said 2 week (14 days). But that dosent explain what is happening to ships.

Last week my son ans I went fishing on his ship The Black Pearl. We parked the boat for the night close to harbor and thought nothing of it. I do the same as I do for my plants and fish tanks. I set up a refresh with them on my characters set routine. Son also refreshes every other day just to be on the safe side.

Only we both got the cant find the ship message 2 days later..... went to harbor master thinking rune went bad... he said boat couldnt be located... odd no one else can dock it.
I got to thinking, wait told son to grab normal boat and see if he could place it in water. Sure enough he placed it.
The boat decayed in under 48 hours.
Now I am a reasonable woman, and can understand if someone went on a joy ride and such but to have the ship decay in under 2 days??? These boats are not cheap like the old puddle jumpers. And that Brit ship is real cash.....
There is a bug and I for one am not happy about it.

There, kinda fixed it a little for you. But THIS. Makes no sense to pay rl cash for something that you can watch sink like that. Cash should = no decay timer. But, just my opinion.

I kinda agree that paying extra RL money for something maybe should have different rules as far as decay or insurance..

I got my Brit boat from the Librarian though.. so you'd have to do some coding work to separate the purchased ones from the Quest ones.

48 hours? Yikes! I think I'll start drydocking at the end of each day, just in case, until they get to the bottom of this.

I agree there is a bug, been around since high seas was introduced. Generally, my boats decay as others have said, in about a week they are fairly worn. But I've lost at least 3 ships that were well under a week. I thought it was a known problem that was correct, but it's definitely still happening; had one disappear a couple weeks ago, refreshed less than a week before.

I think I agree that Brit ships should not decay because people have to pay RL money for them, however they're so damn big! The waters might get filled up with non-decaying ships if that were the case, so I don't know.

I agree you should not lose it if you pay rl money for it, but we need a way to keep the seas from being littered with inactive ones. May make it go to bank box or something and lose contents of hold.

Of course it should be clear to the players how long the refresh timer is.

I can understand the full sea aspect of it. Keep the decay cycle, only when it "falls" all the contents IN your ship are lost but the ship goes to your bank box, or back in the characters pack. Either way would be good and sure, it would probably be a pain in the arse to code... But we are talking about real world dollars here, not just pixelated gold. I think the folks should get something for their hard earned cash. *shrugs*

I've always felt that for large ticket items, once the decay timer has popped, the item should be redeeded and dumped in the owner's bank box.

This allowing expensive things to decay (when you're already going to lose everything in it) seems a slap in the face that is not needed.

If they were nice they could code that any items in the boats would be placed in a "treasure chest" map that you have to go dig up that is also placed in the bank. Sure, it would be abused, but they could have it pick a few random things to drop if people did.

I'm somewhat tired of the "oh it's the player's fault". Blaming the victim is just a cop-out for not doing the right thing.

I also have had a ship, the big brit one fall within 3 days of refreshing.I believe there is a bug thats doing it. I was parked next to land outside a city when mine vanished. this was over a month ago and i reported bug. I would like to recommend the following to maybe fix this situations. Any ship that decays should be transported to a special area, a pirate town and listed as captured and you have to do small quest to get it out of the shipwreck pile. If server space for this new area is overloaded they can then remove the oldest ship wreck at the town. You can even build this pirate town out of wrecked ships. With this type of thing in place you set decay rates to other than 1 week. and those areas you cant park could be really fast decay to get them out of there. And there wont be a complaint about decay rates whatever is happening here. In my opinnion a ship at sea un attended should decay:pie:faster than one docked at land mass.

I think this would be a nice content upgrade. It sounds like it would be a lot of fun and the sea market is getting a bit beaten down. Perhaps they could put this pirate town in the new lands in fel. Give a center for some boat based pvp.

UPDATE:

It gets better. Just so that EVERYONE is AWARE of how EA IS CHOOSING TO HANDLE THE SITUATION:

The GM said I should talk to the billing department about a refund/replacement. So I emailed them. On Sunday. Still haven't heard back. They're choosing to ignore me and hope it will all just go away.

Perfect example of EA's world renowned customer service.

WTF is wrong with you people? Contact you over the phone at your non-toll-free number so I can spend more money talking to your idiot "service" reps than It would cost to just buy another boat from gamecodes?

"Secret Word" ? Are you kidding me? I created my account 12 years ago, I'm not gonna remember any 'secret word'. Oh, and I cant go into my uo account page to see what it is either 'cause the new EA account page thing is a peice of **** and doesn't even list UO as one of my games!

1) bug destroys boat that i paid for
2) GM was worthless, he says contact billing
3) Billing EMAILS me back and says "dont email me, call me on the phone. Oh and uhh, cant help you unless u tell me the 'secret word'".

Translation: "WE DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU. NOW KEEP SPOON-FEEDING US YOUR MONEY AND SHUT UP." -EA

EA has always had a reputation for having some of the worst customer service of any corporate entity, but they just managed to knock themselves down to a new low. Somehow.

I payed for something and no longer have it because of a mistake on the part of the vendor. The vendor has my money, and I have nothing. That is against the LAW. EA is NOT above the LAW.

Its pretty straightforward really.

*Bump* I didn't realise this thread was as old as this, but I was searching for bugs with ships; this seems to still be in effect, either that or they've definitely changed the timer to be 1 week, not the 2 that was stated by the Devs. I know because my ship has decayed and I can tell you it's exactly 7 days since I was last aboard my ship, as I can cross check the fishing quest result document I'm maintaining for when I last did some crabbing. This is frustrating as although it was only a Tokuno ship it was painted with the store bought paint, which cannot be purchased separate at the moment except as part of the Captains Bundle, sigh. If the boat decays, they really should bank it as mentioned, or at least recharge the dye tubs for the colour that vanishes....

Ya still there years later. Lost a boat tram side in the last month on a speed decay aging. Makes three speed decay boats from the start date. Another was a day after but took a GM to place me on my deck. Had to sail to a dock so my mage could make fresh rune. There has been another thread about the $s brit ship decaying. Nothing good said about paying for something real cash that decays. Takes few weeks to get over the hold lost besides the boat and quest back paddling. Fishing bug will bite again and be in an old crusty dragon boat sailing out to the seafare market for a HS boat. Not like hanging out a yew gate could ever top dipping your pole in dungeon waters. Not like the old saying " you don't own any those pixels" applies to anything like a brit boat. You didn't buy those pixels. But paid for the privilage to hold onto them as long as they let you.

after reading this thread 2 things stuck out at me.
1) the seceret word thing was a option that we had to add to our accounts if we wanted the extra security. so if you didnt put it on, it wont be there.

2) if you left your ship out in fel couldnt i come along and sink it with my ship? couldnt orcs and pirates come along and sink it in tram? its been a while since ive used my big ships, but i do recall recalling into mine one day and it had been scuttled and left sinking which made me think had i not arrived shortly there after that it probably would have sunk. maybe this was the case, ships got scuttled and that sped up the decay rate?

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is. However, I've been noticing the pilot of an "extremely damaged" ship hanging out at the emporium on Lake Austin for a few weeks now. I've never seen the actual ship, though. So I don't know how it got there, if being "extremely damaged" effectively makes it invisible. I also don't know why the pilot is standing on the wharf. Maybe someone who has experienced extreme ship damage can provide some details on what happens.

That might be the pure answer for over crowed seas... IF a ship is not refreshed in say under a 3 day timer the ship reverts to a model in your bank with hold and all in tack. The down side is you must reset your boat in the water to access the hold and free up your bank space as the holds number might exceed your limit.
This would clear up fishing lanes and stop decay of costly RL cash ships.

Well to all of those itching to post their collection of jpegs... doing a search for "Missing Ship" doesn't actually have a more recent thread :p And besides there was some useful information in this one so I thought it best to post here.

I managed to get a GM, a few hours later, but he could only locate the ship I was sailing around on, not the previous one. He confirmed decay should be 13 days or 2 weeks, and 7 was too quick for it to have gone... but he couldn't see it attached to my character. I don't believe it's connected to being Scuttled, as Pirates won't attack a ship if no one is on it, and the ability for players to sink ships in Trammel should be patched out still.
There's someone on my shard who keeps moving boats around that have Crew access allowed, but you can normally get back to them. The only thing that I can think of is I didn't refresh the boat properly, but I would have had to have recalled off the boat and back without touching the ropes at least a week before I was last aboard. So I still believe it's suspicious. And frustrating as I have no more charges of Weathered left (and the two tone is ugly)

Well to point out a few areas for players to look for lost boats is haven.. there is a place not far outside town that is a dead zone.. you cant recall in or out even on a ship... I have found one of my smaller vessels stuck there close to shore where you can hop on and off.... There have been spots like this reported before. So some jerk is out there messing with players boats.. at least in the case of this one boat.
But my son's big ship was owner only... we double checked using a second account to test and it came up poofed 2 days later.... GM couldn't find it ether...

Interesting. I checked New Haven on Europa and the docks are indeed crammed with boats, I counted at least 12. It looks like we've a dedicated no-life moving them there.
