Well as I said I'm 40+ something somewhere ish...

As for PvP vs PvM.... I'm RP all the way and I like RP PvP if I had the opportunity for more PvP I would... years have gone since I had a lot of that opportunity. I don't care just to fight for fight sake so I'm not big on Fel. But I also enjoy PvM so I'd say it's 100% RP.

As for play style... I swear I am ADD so I do it all from Fishing and Taming to Treasure Hunting and Crafting...

However my "Main" has changed over the years but it's pretty much always been Archery all the way!

Re: The How Is A UO Player Thread

25-27

I was quite young when I learned about Ultima Online. I occasionally bought game magazines, and one of them had like a 6-page spread about UO and all the amazing things that you could do. I always wanted to play, but we didn't have internet, nor a fast enough computer at that time.

Nevertheless, UO was the first game I ordered by mail. It cost like over $100, as it had to be imported and the shops didnt keep stock of it. I got the first edition, with the cloth map and the pewter pin, which I still treasure. I went to owo.com at my school to read as much as I could about the game. They were working on intelligent NPC behaviour, in which NPCs had daily routines and would reply sensibly to player questions, such as "What is your job?" and "Where do you live?". They were also working on custom shield sprites for guilds, so each guild could put its emblem on their shields. Both fascinated me a lot.

Nevertheless, I still couldn't play. Later on, I bought the Second Age, which included a singleplayer variant, which I played a lot, even though the game ran very, very slow at my 486 machine. It also had a big manual which I enjoyed reading, while fantasizing about all the stuff I'd do in UO. My parents didnt want me to pay a subscription for a game though, and with me needing their creditcard to pay there wasnt much I could do.

When renaissance was released, I could convince my parents. My first character was a pretty ****ty fighter, who kept losing money due to dying to wolves and such. I created a second character, a miner (and later in, smith) to get the money I would blow on the fighter (like, 1k/hr income). Later on the fighter became a mage too, as my skills were no-where near GM anyway.

I joined a small guild and made some friends. Someone co-owned me with a small marble tower in fel, which I could decorate, yeeeey! Got PKed/robbed often but never carried much of value. Eventually the guy moved to east Skara and I'd gather crops from the fields and bake bread there.

When 3rd Dawn came I adopted the 3D client, which looked amazing back then. My fighter didnt suck as much anymore so I made money farming earth ellies in Shame with the guild. Sometimes I'd go to destard to carve scales from dragon corpses left behind by the tamers.

I worked a long time to get enough money to get a boat, and we'd do guild trips in moonglow harbor to kill sea serpents. Magery sure came in handy on a boat, even though I could only cast lightning effectively.

Just before AOS, they released the solen. Best time of my life. The guild house was close to the woods where they dwelled and I made some nice money. As every house spot was taken and even the tiniest house would command over a million gold, I was forced to live in Fel, south of Yew. Had a small stone workshop which I spent 500k on...

AOS royally ****ed up the 3D graphics. The avatars became an ugly mess and the terrain tiles were changed to something nasty too. I didnt like the new combat dynamics at all, everything dealed much more damage now, making battles go way too fast. Killing monsters wasn't special anymore, with the good gear it was just slaughter...

It had good things too. When the server went up, I raced east, even though the screen went black for a long time at the moongate. I managed to place a 16x16 in the east of the continent, close to the mountains. I made a beautiful piramid house out of standstone, which would be the prettiest thing in the hood for a long time. I started playing a paladin, which would be my most succesful character. I didn't like Malas much, so I turned to Ilshenar to farm exodus overseers and even minions.

However, over time, all my friends quit and the guild disbanded and the servers started going empty. There was a live event, which had royal guard sashes being handed out. I didn't get mine. There was a hint in the throneroom that an other event would soon be held. I didn't sleep, staying up for 2 nights staring at the screen, so I wouldn't miss it. Eventually we were told it would happen at a later time or something. There was an event I could attend later on, and we were taken to Fel and had many of us killed by PKs. And at the end, the EM told us that the royal tailor had strained his hand, and there would be no sashes!

I was so increadibly angry, that I left the game and played on a freeshard for years, only coming back every once in a while, such as for the Ophidian event, which I did enjoy. When the 3D client was discontinued, I pulled down my house and quit completely, as I hated both 2D and the kingdom reborn client and the freeshards would let me play with the 3D client without problems. That, and I really, really hated the Elf expansion and the stupid quests, item grind and recipies.

Last year I came back, found that the shard was completely desolate and I could put up a house wherever I wanted. Erected house outside Luna, but still couldn't bring myself to playing, as the 2D client had too tiny a game screen and too small backpacks, and the KR client had way too many performance (and visual) issues. Hoping I could come back now that the new client is finally getting a bit more polish, but the account management site wont accept my payment...

Re: The How Is A UO Player Thread

I'd like to see a follow-up poll of age versus play styles. The age-old wisdom says that PK's are younger folks, but not sure that's true in UO any more.

How would you construct a valid poll with these categories?

Age versus PvP/PvM
75%-100% PvP
50%-75% PvP
Some PvP
100% PvM

Age versus Main Character Play style;
Tamer
Bard
Thief
Dexxer
Mage
Crafter
I'm afraid the old adage is definitely true. And technically, this is only a poll for the average age of UO players who read the stratics forums. Nevertheless, this thread tells me three things:

1. Confirms the general impression that this is an aging game with an aging player base.

2. There is a clear correlation between age and Pvm playstyle.

3. If the Devs and Producers don't start to appeal to the few young players left, the game will die off shortly after its favored players do.

Sorry if it sounds a little blunt, but it's also the truth. I'm not trying to upset anyone or imply there's anything wrong with Pvm, so don't take offense. I'm just someone who enjoys playing the game, albeit for different reasons than many of you, and is concerned for its future.

And yes, 20-30 and 99.9% Pvp... I think I killed Medusa once a couple months ago...

Forty something and have been playing since my best friend shoved the game box in my hands at a ren faire and said INSTALL IT. That is after she had been nagging me for weeks to buy it. She finally just bought it and forced it upon me. Been here over 10 years and still loving it.

Wish my old friends and guildies were still here, but have made new friends and guildies across all shards.

Not planning on leaving anytime soon! Fun thread! Thanks!

Re: The How Is A UO Player Thread

I will leave my age up to you to figure out. Jimmy rocked the house at "Woodstock". My first computer was a C-64 for $499. Retired from the USNavy in 93. Read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings when they first came out. Yes I am old as dirt and some even say I helped Noah build the Ark. Started playing UO in 98 and haven't stopped once.
Hah... my first computer was a C-64 too but I think we paid closer to $600 for it. I can't tell you how many hours I wasted on Defender, Moon Patrol and Rambo. Sadly retirement is not even a glimmer in my eye... :p

31 here and been playing since I was 17. I was living with a friend at the time who worked at CompUSA and he convinced me that I just HAD to buy this new game they had gotten in so we could try it out and see what all the buzz was about.

I am plesently surprised by the majority age ranges. I'm only in my 30's but I'm somewhat pleased and warmed that alot of people who play UO are older than me. Makes my sister in law and mother in law's comments about kids game kinda redundant.

I certainly will be looking at quite a few of you differently now, wow! A very useful poll!

55+ My sons fault back in feb 2000. They needed help translating Stratics and express themselves ingame. They had one account and gave me the 5th slot.
They moved on , testing everything ..comes back sometimes with new expansion and grapthics .They still admit UO is the best but they are graphics snobs. :( My longest break was 3 days I spent in hospital.

I do most things in UO. Helping new and returning players to start up on Europa is my main interest . Crafting, fishing, decorating, boss hunting with the guild..meh the list would be to long. I dont pvp , im too slow to even try . But its good that others like it, we need all kinds of players and playstyle options.

If UO ends its the end of my gaming. I never tried anything else. Watched the sons alot but nothing else caught my interest ever.

It's been more my experience that pk's, thieves an such are more in the 25-45 area. Thinking of it there's actually a few trends in this playergroup i never really thought of before....

probably around 75% have kids/married
almost 100% have played since before ren
a lot of people in this group work as software developers (i've met more other programmers in UO that were thieves or PK's than any other group of players!)
a good portion of this group played muds or other permadeath games before UO
most play UO casually as a game, not as a second job
Most thieves/pk's are roleplayers at least to some extent

(and not just talking current base of PK's and thieves, I'm talking one's i've talked to over the past 14 years, there's not really that many left now, most that sill play uo are on freeshards)

If anything there seems to be a generation gap, most pure pvm players seem to fall in the "really young" category (under 20) or older category (over 40)

Now I will say I have run into alot of uo players and age I find has nada to do with how they play. I knew a 94 year old who played UO way back .. you would never guess his age! he played a pk of all things! Yes he was hell on wheels..... this was years ago and he has long gone from this earth. Then on the other hand I met a young person who had the wisdom of the ages and grace. Polite and so adult. They were 14, but had the berring of an adult. Age is what you make it to be. I dont feel or want to feel 54. Its whats important.

I might kill to be 54 again. [j/k]

But you're right. The age doesn't matter so much as appreciating the time we're given and appreciating others as well. We're all in the same boat, so to speak. Life is far too short... a concept I couldn't fully grasp when I was very young. Here in UO, the young can be old, and the old can be young again. Who could ask for more than that? :)

Never mind the 55+
 NOT KIDDING!

Glad I am not the only "Silver" one in the crowd.
That you are NOT! Too many are not speaking up.

That would make for an interesting poll too, how many of us old UO vets were drug into UO by our kid/s ! lol
Almost like they pre planned our *retirement* years :whip:
by draggin us into UO, and *modern tech. back then* in the first place. haha
My son gave me all his old solo UO games one by one as he finished playing them, then gave me a character slot in his Online game Sept 1997.

3. If the Devs and Producers don't start to appeal to the few young players left, the game will die off shortly after its favored players do.
Anonymoose, UO is still here today, for you to play, probably because of all those who came before and after you .. including the Veterans and Seniors who have supported and played UO through thick and thin, eg: Age of Shadows, and some those players have already passed on, or exist now and are still supporting UO who will sooner or later pass the game on to you and others like you ...and on and on it goes .. bless their souls ..

And as QueenZen so aptly put it: "Almost like they (UO) pre planned our *retirement* years" so your retirement years may be planned also ..
- - so will UO go on forever ?? - - because they (UO) have always found ways to draw in the younger generation who leave to play other games, but many of whom often return to UO and become UO's Veterans like the rest of us old-timers.

- - I think I think too much about what to think about

Hey I just didn't want to assume anything.. One thing I've learned is it's better to ask a dumb question than assume an idiotic notion. And it was tongue in cheek.

But so far the poll shows 40-42 winning..

I have always felt UO players seemed a little more mature.. sometimes the extremes are more visible is all.

So 40 'ish seems like a good area for our game..

And we always have Kelmo to even the curve out..

@ Kayne and everyone else who commented on my #3,

I'm not implying that all "younger" people only care about Pvp. Just as I'm not implying all "older" people care about is Pvm. And sure, current older players might bring children/friends in and vise/versa.

But the truth is that the player base is deteriorating and has been for years. I started playing almost 10 years ago, I know how it once was (contrary to what some have insinuated). My neighbor was actually on the Dev team from Renaissance to Samurai, which is how I got involved. The mid-2000s saw roughly 70% (not an arbitrary number bc it comes straight from my former neighbor) of the UO base leave for various reasons. Obviously, that number has continued to decrease steadily due to things like mmo competition *cough-WoW-cough*, lost interest, etc. And the fact is they just are not attracting enough new people to compensate for the ones being lost.

So, yeah, logic dictates that when their current player base is gone so is the game. Die-hard loyal players will undoubtedly play as long as they're able, but my point is that the life-span of the game runs hand-in-hand with that of the few players remaining. Hence, the only logical solution is to appeal and listen to their younger player base more than they have. And, sorry, but Pvp is a part of that. Not the only part obviously, but a significant part.

- - never will stop learning .. not enough time in a life time to learn all there is to know ... lived all this time and hardly know or understand anything ..so much to learn ... *sigh*

Anyhow I sure do enjoy UO.
