Is there an official UO forum, or another forum the UO developers interact with?

Once upon a time, at UO.com there was, now this is the closest to an "official forum" that it gets.

Some devs are pretty active on Twitter and Facebook though. Grimm gave somewhat of a play-by-play on Friday of re-rendering the wall tiles. The new producer is pretty active on Twitter (as has been posted on here).

Call me an Optimist if you must, or need to. But I honestly believe more Dev interaction will be happening around here soon enough. Nothing changes over night, except of course the date. But, I do see good things down the road on the communication front.

it would be the wisest thing they ever done for UO was to make an "official" forum ran by "official" UO staff cause the credibility here isn't that good most find it very bias

There was an official UO forum run by Origin/EA way back when. It was accessible from the uo.com page. When Stratics had their uo site, EA figured, why compete?

There's a lot of work, editing, and moderating that goes into forums. More than some people realize. And at this point, there's no way Mythic has anywhere near the staff available to run a forum, even if they wanted to.

Personally, I'm glad they don't have one so that their staff can focus on in-game stuff, such as bug fixes and new content.

Interesting. Somebody better tell the official Warhammer forums and they better tell Kai Schober. You may recognize Kai as the community relations guy for UO, as well as Warhammer and Camelot. He's in charge of those official forums and the moderators that aren't supposed to exist.

The only reason there are official forums for Warhammer, and not for UO or Camelot, is because BioWare has made that decision. BioWare has forums for every other game they make or are responsible for - they even have forums for DOS games that are 15+ years old.

MS-DOS games are worthy of official BioWare forums.

UO is not.

and on the other hand it would create more jobs and give them reason to put more resources into a game thats well established in the gaming community. I'm all for creating more jobs aren't you? everyone should want them to put more into UO more legit official forums for the community thats properly informed by the dev's. More attention to the community more attention to promotion the base for it is there and has been for 14yr. Shouldn't be that hard for them I'd think it would be harder for them to try and build this kinda of community off any new game they should take advantage of what they already have here and build more to it.

There is another Forum that Jeff uses, he posts there fairly often and interacts with the people there. That forum is:

You'll also find that they've opted out of the Offical Fansite program as the rules were too restrictive for them to operate in an open minded fashion. The Admin there also has an awesome nodding cat avatar, beware you WILL watch it for hours on end!!!

No, he's really posted a couple of times as well.

Both Stratics and UOFOrums are actually quite bad about posting his "Tweets," for example I consider his statement about the importance PvP to be semi-major but, as far as I can tell, I'm the only one who noticed it (and find it hilarious that almost no one noticed when I posted it here).

I don't blame either of them, though.

Twitter is a very odd paradigm, where updates can be ridiculously frequent or so infrequent that stuff is easy to miss either way. Also, important news is nestled right in between stuff like "my gf is hot" and "I saw a cat."

UO has not had official forums for some years.

Lest folks forget, let me remind us what the official reason for their closure was: We as a community were so violently aggressive in our posting styles that paid moderators were getting too expensive. The Japanese got to keep their official forum because they were less aggressive in their posting styles, and hence less expensive to moderate.

Currently, the producer posts here and on UoForums.com. Other unofficial, fan-made boards exist, but I have no idea if the producer, or any of the team members, posts on any of them.

As the last paid MOD out the door with Grey, this was a big part of it, not the only reason though. During the last 3 months, I was the only contracted MOD left.

Note to Salivern_Diago: UOForums decided to stay in the fansite program, removing offending trade forums quite awhile ago. We never left the program.

If you wanna get picky.

I'm not hating on UOForums, as you can tell I have an account there as well and I do read both, but the bickering that goes on there about these forums leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth. I've not seen one time anyone bad-mouthing UOForums here, yet I see it often over there..often times people refer to Stratics as*that other forum* seeming unwilling to even TYPE the word Stratics.

If we want to be equals, then act like it, I esnjoy reading both, but the atmosphere over there is a bit lacking imo.

Edited to add that I don't wish disrespect about either forum, like I said I read both, this isn't a contest on who's better, and I agree that UO needs an official forum all it's own, though how to implement that I've no clue as it would require man-power to run and operate. I'd rather them take the time they have to further fix the game we all love.

Let's see here...

First of all you appear to have conveniently not actually read my post.

I will excerpt the relevant portion for you, and I'll add emphasis to make it easier to read.

Lest folks forget, let me remind us what the official reason for their closure was:
By definition I was leaving the door open for there to be another reason beyond the "official" one. I'd have been stupid not to.

Obviously, if our game had, say, 20 million subscribers, it is more likely that EA would have found the money to continue the official forum, and probably done so gladly, no matter how crazy we are.

As to the "actual fact" that this was the officially stated reason for the closure? That was posted on the old forums themselves, which are now defunct, hence this thread, and I had to rely upon memory.

It never occurred to me someone would be so violently aggressive as to challenge even that this was the official reason! If I'd stated that it was the reason, or the only reason, I'd have expected to be challenged and rightly so.

But to be challenged on saying that this was the reason they gave? Never occurred to me someone would challenge that; I'd thought folks' memories were adequate.

Foolish me.

Fortunately, though, seems someone else also remembers this:

http://vboards.stratics.com/2042939-post18.html

Of course that guy could be lying, I guess, and my memory could be inadequate, and your random implication that I was somehow wrong in what the stated ("official") reason was could be correct.

Always possible!

Of course, you cite nothing for what the actually stated reason was, since you somehow disagree with me that that's what they said. Surely they did not say "hey, we hate UO, don't feel like spending the money on the forums, so out they go." Even if they thought that surely they didn't say it.

Indeed, seems a lot more likely that they would say something like: "You all are too aggressive, we don't have the money to keep up." And that's what they said.

Of course you could be challenging my idea that UO players tend to be an aggressive bunch. Maybe those are the "facts" you are looking for.

If that's so I urge you to go to this website called UO stratics and look around.

Here's a post to get your analysis started:

http://vboards.stratics.com/2042894-post15.html

It's an excellent example of needless, indeed mindless, aggression that doesn't even really read the post it's replying to!

Read a lot of that poster's other posts as well, you'll see the same thing.

Finally I have to note something: It took me roughly 5 minutes, not counting proofreading, to counter a mere rant that probably took you all of 5 seconds to compose. To counter a random rumor is similar.

Building is harder and more time-consuming than destroying, and is considerably less fun to boot. Our tendency to want to destroy makes one of the worst decisions in UO history, to dump the official forums, look like a good one or at least look justified.

That was 8 years ago. You really should check some of the threads that get locked in the Warhammer forums. They match us for angst/anger. When Wrath of Heroes was announced, it was an especially angry/angsty forum, more so than UO. It's not just Warhammer though, plenty of angry posts crop up on the Star Wars forums on SWTOR.com. Blizzard probably sees more angry posts about Warcraft in a week than Stratics sees in a month or two with UO. Game companies have learned that's a part of MMOs.

BioWare understands fully how important official forums are - just look at the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums. Their general discussion area alone has over 4 million posts in a few short years. They have a very large community relations team for Star Wars.

As for "paid moderators", BioWare.com forum moderators are volunteers.

BioWare understands fully how important communities are to games (just look at the Dragon Age and Mass Effect forums in the Social.BioWare.com website for more examples). They have a large infrastructure for their forums website that handles millions of posts and has dozens of moderators. UO would be a drop in the bucket activity wise compared to Dragon Age or Mass Effect on those forums.

It's not because of anything that happened 8 years ago or because of the expense of "paid moderators". The two guys who are at the top of BioWare have even said that they and not EA management have control over what goes on within BioWare.

It's especially ironic since the head of BioWare Mythic, in talking about Warhammer a few weeks ago, said community was incredibly important.

When a 15 year old MS DOS game or a sister MMO (Warhammer) that probably has less subs than UO or Camelot have official forums on BioWare.com while UO and Camelot do not, then at some point we just need to accept that BioWare doesn't care that much about UO or Camelot. Even so-called "free to play" MMOs have official forums.

In looking through the Warhammer forums, this is how some Warhammer players feel in relation to UO/Camelot just from posts in the past few days - some of you may find them amusing:

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning » Gameplay » General Discussion | new WAR website looks great!

Just reading the herald on those other sites you can see that their customers are treated way better than the ones on war.
Apparently our money isn't as deserving of anything off Bioware.
They get new content and regular updates and a dev/cms team that works hard.
What do we get? F*ck all and a dev/cms team that doesnt give a sh*t about us.
Wow, seriously what in the hell.... Some of those games have been out for a decade and they're getting daily/weekly updates, hotfixes, Dev comments. I seriously cannot fathom how our monthly payments don't rate the same type of attention from the game developers. Weekly HOTFIXES! ... did I mention weekly hotfixes??

What's insane is the fact that WAR has the BEST pvp/RVR on the MMO market, has only been out 3 years, yet WAR Dev HQ and the Warhammer website are reminescent of an old black and white western film.... cut scene to a dilapidated ghost town with tumbleweeds blowing by.

I'm not blaming the current skeleton crew that's at the helm @ WAR, you just have to wonder how Bioware/Mythic can totally abandon supporting this game, yet they're still CLEARLY "all in" on DAOC and UO...

WAR main page hasnt been updated since August 2010... TWO THOUSAND AND TEN! Nearly 13 months. Though a new website really wouldnt matter because as stated above, nobody's home at WAR HQ. They dont have the staff apparently to comment on current in game issues, they dont have the staff to provide weekly hotfixes, bug fixes, ect. There are a host of issues and bugs that were brought up with the latest patch, and all we've really seen from the Devs is a discussion on Forts... really forts?? How about the latest and greatest imbalance issues and bugs that the last patch produced?
DAOC got a new website in June Status of the Website | Dark Age of Camelot

It was relaunched a few days ago with a new look. Newer Look For New Website | Dark Age of Camelot
Maybe a few more "complete overhaul" of designs for daoc and they will get round to giving the war one a makeover, somehow i doubt it though
nice to see DAoC getting some attention though :)

3 years after launch on DAoC there were already 5 expansions 2 of which were free. Not just patches but proper expansions. What did you get with war? Lotd? well it was free i guess :p

WAR smells, none of the devs want to be associated with it, as to why they are putting all their time into daoc and uo, and leaving this game in the corner to dwindle down into nothing.

@ BioWare: EA doesn't tell us what to do • Eurogamer.net

EA told them to say that.
I think Mythic doesnt even have Bob the janitor left.

BioWare needed as much help as possible to push ToR, so they took everything that wasnt nailed to the ground.
The reason bioware have continued to support daoc and uo over war is they are seen as success stories that set benchmarks in mmos. Keeping them supported is just good PR when they want to claim to have some mmo heritage when they are plugging swtor.

As much as I like war it was seen as a overhyped, overspending dud by most of the mmo community. Unfortunatly it will never get the classic status that daoc and the ultima franchise have got so wont get the support.
BioWare made the decision not to have official communities for UO and Camelot when they took over the Mythic properties. They supported leaving the Warhammer community up and running and moving them to Social.BioWare.com.

It's a crappy decision by BioWare to pretend that UO and Camelot communities don't exist, although they are working on the Camelot websites. You still won't really find anything significant as far as UO or Camelot on the official BioWare.com homepage.

May I remind those making snide comments about stratics that we wouldn't have had a community home and huge guide to all things UO had stratics not been here for all these years. UOForums, UOGuide weren't around when stratics was born.

Lets remember the history shall we - stratics was born with UO as its first portal. It may not have always been perfect but its been here and all run by an army of volunteers who give up free time to do what they do.

Well that's a good way to alienate most of your playerbase.

I for one refuse to use either of those satanistic programs.

I'm not about to have everyone nosing about in my RL. That's private.

And I don't have any desire to EVER have that garbage on my PC.

Fact is I'm not alone. There are believe it or not a great number of people who feel the same way. Twitter and Facebook are an ENORMOUS invasion of privacy. And if you mistakenly believe that they aren't monitoring every move you make on the web then you are greatly mistaken.

Not that I have anything to hide but what I do privately should be private and not for sale to every money hungry ad campaign company.

If I want to tell some company whether or not I like their crap then I'll do so.

If they want to REALLY know how I feel about stuff... they can ask me.

I hate the fact that big business's and companies are going to Facebook and Twitter to market their products.

I'd much rather have them post on forums such as this where everyone is allowed to use them... and more folk can see what's going on...

without having my privacy invaded.

You mean SOME not most, and really, in both cases it's pulling a quantity out of your ass with no way to back up the statement.

I for one refuse to use either of those satanistic programs.

That's entirely up to you, and the people who do use those systems aren't being forced to divulge private information, if they do so, it's by their own choice. Granted, the level of such information that people put out is worrisome, but what happens is on them really. I use Facebook but have a VERY limited friends list. Want to friend me, then you have to tell me who you are and if I know you in terms of UO or are a real life friend or family, then I'll add you, otherwise, I don't. I am not the size of my friends list.

Not that I have anything to hide but what I do privately should be private and not for sale to every money hungry ad campaign company.
Ad blockers and browser security addons for the win here. YAY Firefox!

I hate the fact that big business's and companies are going to Facebook and Twitter to market their products.
Because, you know, going where the people are is obviously the wrong way to do it.

I'd much rather have them post on forums such as this ... without having my privacy invaded.
When they have time, they do, sometimes it's easier to pop off a quick blurb on a system designed for more mobile applications (I've posted to here from my phone, but it's a LOT harder than a quick Facebook update and I'm sure Twitter as well).

Disclosure: I do use Facebook by request from a friend and it has helped in other areas, my activities there tends to be MUCH less UO based and limited to occasional blurbs, I don;t play Facebook games. I do NOT use Twitter because I see no benefit in the concept of giving my life play-by-play unless people want to read "looking at another coin" for 8 hours a day.

I think it's time to call a halt to this.

There are no official forums. Only EA can definitively say why that is.
There are a number of fan sites, uo.stratics and uoforums are just two of them.

Each of them have their supporters, but we will not enter into a 'my dad's bigger than your dad' type shouting contest about which is best. Stratics staff endeavour to support the game and its players to the best of our ability.
