shield question

I'm intending to use at least some of my vet choices for several of the shard shields, but I'm really nervous about doing it as I'm afraid there will be some hidden thing that will make it a useless item for me, particularly since I can not sell the shields if they do not do what I think they will.

Question: Is the shard the shield is redeemed on... Is the token a "from that shard to the shield shard" sort of thing? Or can it be from ANY shard to that specific shard?

Edit: I know no players have had the time to test it, but I am hoping one of the powers that be will be watching this thread and can answer.

As for testing then, you cant test the xfers on Origin as its now running on a different publish to the other shards. You can only xfer when the two shards have the same pubish on them.

That is a very good point but this means that it is not possible then for players to actually "test" the transfer process before the Shard Shields gets actually published to all of the shards. But then, "if" there are problems, won't it be unfortunately a tad late to find that problems exist ?
I mean, usually the testing is done "before" the actual general publish......

I would imagine (and hope) that there would be several test runs of xfering on test shards before they make it live. I cant imagine the code would be that different. Just a few tweaks here and there.

Which is why I said I am expecting this publish to be on Origin for a bit longer then most so the shields can be tested before the publish goes live.

As for the shields...you chose a shard..say you want to go to Chessy...I'm on Origin. I pick a Chessy shield and lock it down. That will produce one token TO Chessy...no other shard. SO I take that and go to Chessy....now either 1 of 3 things will happen:

1. I stay on Chessy
2. I buy a regular transfer token to get back to Origin
3. I was smart enough to get an Origin Shield before I left and brought it with me to get back.

SO....to make a round trip, TWO shields are needed...one TO the shard you're going to and ONE to get BACK.

Getting one for your home shard is a given, how else are you going to get home?

Picking the second shield is where you need to think about it. IF you're only going to chose one, chose the shard you think you're most likely to travel to. Most people would chose Atlantic for buying/trading/selling.

So you'll have at LEAST 2 shields...one for your home shard and one for whatever other shard you wish to travel too.

I am a 14 year vet, and I can tell you...I am excited by this, even though Packies and Beetles can't go with me.

I have full character slots on all three of my accounts, with one having seven total, and two having six slots filled, and I can get a seventh empty slot on one of those accounts on my home shard.

I currently have four Rewards available to pick, and as soon as account aging gets going, I will get two more. I am going to use these to get Shields...one to my home shard, and then starting at the top of the list, I will get each shard as a shield.

Yes...this WILL likely take the rest of my life, but I collect all of the Holiday stuff (gifts on log in) on ALL shards ( I have one of the amazingly cool Neon gift boxes a few years ago...on Siege of all places...LOL) and I then conglomerate all of the gifts from the shard onto one or two of the characters on that shard.

I was hoping for transfers or to X-Shard with people to get all of the gifts to my home shard where I have developed characters and my vendor house...and now, albeit slower than with Packies...I should be able to accomplish this.

One question that pops into my mind is:

What about the bank box of the character doing the transfer? Can I load up the bank box on Atlantic, after a transfer, and then transfer back to my home shard, and find all that same stuff in the respective players bank box when I get home?

Not a problem. Soulstones and frags are very light.

This is giving me a headache trying to figure it out

So, I go to shard where I have excess holiday items, things purchased, etc.. I claim a shield for my home shard and get a token to transfer things to home shard. (Assuming I put up a house or get someone to friend me there.)

When I am done, think I can unlock shield and carry it to another shard? (recognizing it still always transfers things to my home shard).

so an example, the Rares collectors old enough, who have chars on all shards to get EM event items for example can freely gather rare items and drops up send to Atl or the rares fests and make even MORE gold than the younger players trying to make collections

I can't find any posts from devs or any notes that claim the shield is account bound, only that the token when claimed by the shield owner is account bound. (and owner as defined in UO terms is whoever placed it in the house). Is there a source for this information or is it just speculation?

Also, I looked and looked but all screenshots of the new rewards claim don't have the "siege symbol" as is in the spoiler notes, it gets to siege on the list and skips right over it. I'm mostly asking because though I obviously don't care about the transfer tokens I am interested in getting a siege shield for decor to place in my castle.

It looks like it's possible they can be used by a different account like the other rewards but it loses it's "coolness" in that they can't be used by an account that isn't old enough.

I claimed it on a 170 month account and gave it to one not as old (stating the obvious...)

Are you able to switch the home shard after placing it or is it indeed fixed once chosen?

i haven't tried but i doubt you can switch...there is a different choice for each shard when you get the deed.

I'm not sure i like the size of the shield but displaying will be cool.

Token specifically says Pacific shard transfer token and is account bound. It doesn't even ask me which shard i want to go to when i click next but it failed and said that shard is unavailable (im assuming because Origin is published up and no other shards are). It looks like it should work once Pacific is published.

I'm many years away from being eligible to claim one of the shields as a reward, but I do have a question about them. If you have one in your house and then transfer the house without taking down the shield, what happens to it?

From what I've read, it sounds like it would be nonfunctional for the new owner and the only way the original owner of the shield could still use it is if (a) the new owner released it and handed it to them, or (b) the original owner becomes a co-owner or friend to the house after the transfer and the new owner sets access on the shield so the old owner can still use it.

I'd hate to think that the shield just disappears if it is still locked down when you transfer the house and think this should be clarified.

That's a very good question and concern. If it's anything like the hanging shield and skeleton, it's a nightmare when you transfer houses.

I would really like to see the shields themselves be transferable to other accounts, even if they are only "Usable" but accounts that are 14 years or older. I would love to have a complete set of all shards in my house on display, but there is no way to claim that many unless they start giving us like 5 choices a year.

Allowing the shield to be transferred from one account to another while still only allowing it to be used by a 14 year vet would keep the item as a bonus for vets which is obviously intended, but make it possible to collect all the ones needed/wanted.

This Vet Reward is interesting. UMMM New Account System that in order to unlink account you need to call. UMMM 14 yr Vet Accounts will now be sold for even more to the rares dealers, esp if there a vet rewards on the account, and now EA/UO will know where these Accounts are. With each SHIELD EA/UO loses $20 every 30 days. I am sure 300 items a month will be enough for any collector/trader.

While I agree that a poll needs to be made, I don't think it should be made on the topic you suggested.

While a small percentage of UO players post here, I'd like to see roughly how many people have active accounts that are 14 years old and able to use these.

That would give us a very rough estimate on how useful they will be.

As for age, I think maybe 10 or even 12 year rewards would be better, but again I'd like to see just how many people actually have 14 year old accounts, I bet it's more then most people think.

The way I see it, Veteran Rewards are a business promotion item which needs to be appealing for top years active accounts (in our case 14th Year...) since the whole logic is to add items that are appealing enough for players to maintain their accounts as active so as to eventually qualify to earn that much wanted reward.

To this purpose, I think the Shard Shields are perfect......... they are highly desirable and top year (currently 14th.....). So, its appeal will help lower age accounts think twice about de-activating their accounts since they'd loose precious active months towards earning this much wanted reward.

Short version, I think this was an ingenuous addition. Personally, I would have allowed the ability to "change" the shards from one month to another and not have it permanent to always the same shard.

Those who pay for multiple accounts will eventually have all those accounts, if they maintain them as active, come to the active age where they will be eligible to claim a LOT of those desirable Veteran Rewards.

No they have not because this is a new reward.

#1 14 years ago nobody thought UO would be here, even the people that made it.

Look who owns the majarity on the 14 year old accounts. It is a very small group of player and a majority of them belong to the rares collectors and the people that sell items for RL $ and they prob. bought those too. But again that is IMHO.

Yes, this is a cool reward but IMHO this should have been a 10th year reward. Yes I will be 14 in just a little while so it really doesn't matter to me. But we need to look at UO and start rewarding players now that have stuck it out for this long. 10 years devoted to something is a hell of a long time, UO has lasted longer then half of the marriages in the real world and that is saying a lot.

In closing. PLease EA/UO rethink this and make it a 10th year or maybe even a 6th year vet reward. 10th would be my pick if I were allowed to.

I'm almost six years away from being able to claim one of these shields, so I'm trying to just ignore them for the time being and not get worked up over them. I don't transfer often (maybe twice per year?) and it's usually only when I'm trying to focus on building characters on a shard with really dismal in-game shopping options for power and stat scrolls.

That being said, however, I sure would have liked to hear the discussions among the UO team members about this reward and what they hoped putting them into the game was going to accomplish in the long run. I'm also curious whether they had those discussions before or after the acount system migration, since that process seems to have made it a lot harder for people to be able to sell/give an account to someone else without going through the account transfer program (if it even exists at this point and can be used to transfer an account with its actual age still intact).

This reward sure does have me wondering about the state of the game's subscriber base. It seems to me that the shields can't be preparation for a shard merger because people would scream bloody murder (and in my opinion, rightly so) if they "wasted" vet rewards picking shields for shards that will be eliminated. Also, it would seem to be incredibly stupid to only let the oldest accounts make free transfers (stretched out overy many many months) if there were to be shard mergers.

Maybe they're nothing more than a hefty incentive to stick around and keep paying for your account. And maybe EA's working on a way to sell us an (expensive) upgrade that boosts an account's age. Can you imagine the hubbub that might cause? Potentially more money for EA to sink into the game and an attractive offer for people who have multiple accounts of varying ages who really, really like the idea of free transfers. How many people might bite their tongues and not complain about the fairness of these being a 14th year reward if they had the option to dump on EA a chunk o' money to speed up the aging of their account? Would you do it, or would you opt to just let your account age naturally (rolleyes and just buy regular transfer tokens in the meantime and be happy that they let you move a ton of stuff at one time? (I think the tokens from the vet reward shields only let you move what's in your bankbox and your character's backpack.)

Personally I think that it should be set for 12th year vet rewards... and that's not because I'm a 12th year vet or anything

As far as how they are setup I think it's perfect

1. No packys/animals - good that means the gold sellers and such can't choose a dozen of these and transfer goods for free making them more money.

2. Account Bounded both tokens and shield - Great idea IMO. Prevents revenue loss for UO. (Lack of funds produces cuts which causes stress on developers... and a stessed developer is worse than riding a bora with hemorrhoids. (Hey I didn't know hemorrhoids had 2 r's!)

If I'm not mistaking when you transfer with a normal transfer token your bank contents also transfer with you... will these tokens do the same?

And for people not being able to use them to make a profit...sure they can transfer less without packies, but it's a free transfer, bank and backpack is still 250 items that they can transfer over.

Shields are just like the other rewards you mount on the home wall. Just that they give you same as the rugs 1 token a month and only by the account who placed it.

If you forget to remove it from a house you sell and the buyer trys to remove it and is not old enough it will refuse to be removed till said age is reached or requested by owner to GM staff.

Although it is account bound, replacing it back may be impossible as per your not of that account. Think of it as a Soulstone. It's account bound so worthless to any other but that account except for deco.

I see it as a great way to go visit my other shards by my mains. Think of it as a vacation ticket. Ok so you cant take a set of packies with you but you can carry and bank your goodies to go and have a great visit. (Placement of a return Shield might only work on that other shard set to home) I can see all sorts of uses for this. I can see I am gunna have fun with this!!

It said you can pick its shard design for the shard you want the tolken for... but I just thought of something what if you cant pick the shard your on for a shield... as a return ticket to take with you.... This would mean you would need a shield on that shard your going to visit to return.
Does that shield need 30 days to get the first return ticket? Or for that matter the first shield too?

The 14th year shield has to be locked down in a house, after locking it down you can dbl click it and get the specific shard transfer token the shield represents. The shield will spawn another token each month. These can not be sold they are account bound. You must stable your pets before attempting to transfer. So pick your shields wisely!

ps Doesn't matter if you do not own the house, you can be friended or co owned , the shield just has to be locked down and only the owner of the shield can use it.

i have a question.
with the treasure map rug if you forget to collect your maps, you stop by a month or two later and dd click the rug you get a map for every week ya missed.
so like 8 will pop into your pack.

will the shields be the same?

so if i place it, get a token, then dont need it for like 6 months and forget to check it, if i dd click it 6 months later will i get 6 tokens?

Weird, the text in two screenshots is conflicting, they must have forgotten to change the message one one of them. (just like attacks that use poisoning/stealth still claim that you dont have the required tactics skill to use...)

Actually there is still a chance that it isn't account bound or that it can be traded but it has to be the right time.

Just like if you dye a deeded item before you actually use it it works but you can't once you have used the deed once already, i did not get to try it with my other 14 year vet account before i had already used it. I only tested it after i had already used it once on the account that claimed it.

I am reluctant to use another choice for testing at this time...

P.S. Just to clarify...I did test trying to use it on my other 14 year vet AFTER i had already used it once on the account that i claimed it on by redeeding it, trading it and trying to use/place it again.
