This is the first of two grievance threads.

WHY OH WHY have torches not been made into melee weapons yet?

50% fire damage
50% physical
9-14 base damage **
club swing speed
single handed weapon
craftable/repairable by carpenters

** the base damage would vary so much partially because of practicality, you might get hit with more handle than fire one time or all fire end another, and just to make the torch stand out.

I've been waiting years for this to occur naturally, but it hasn't.
So here is my nudge!

Yes, would be fun. It is one of those little details that... oh, who are we kidding, we will never get this either.

Muhahaha and so it snowballs...

Part of me worries that EA has just simply forgotten the strength and solidarity of the torch. High Seas was released, ships had cannons, fire was needed to light the fuse. Sounds like a golden opportunity for the torch to shine! But no, the match was born.

You forgot one property:

Night Sight
GOOD CALL

also what special moves would such a weapon have?

shadow strike? certainly not while the torch is lit! but perhaps if it is smothered or not yet lit.

disarm? I could see swiping a flaming torch at someones hands to burn and mangle them.

crushing or concussion? very doubtful, and we can do much better than that.

whirlwind? this seems very reasonable, think back to monster movies where there is one guy with a torch spinning around with it to keep monsters and zombies at bay.

Make them imbuable. While you're at it add in fishing poles so i can imbue those too (with skill mods just like you can get from a runic saw)

I voted yes. Good idea.

Counter weapon should be a

Pail of water.

50% Cold
50% Physical
12-16 throwing damage
2 handed wep
Crafted/repairable by Smiths

Special wep abilty

1) Negates Night Sight proerties for 10 seconds

2) Gives victim the cold shivers.

LawL ok Im kidding but I do like the idea of the torch being used.

Additionally lets add the frying pan and lute as melee weapons too. The frying pan would have poision strike and blistering skin and the lute could do extra physical damage.

Like the frying pan idea.
The lute may be a............may be a stretch.

Lythos, we all know imbue fishing pole would be way OP. The pk guilds would never let up about it :)

arent torches held in the left hand? that means you could equip 2 weapons then.

The torches are right handed as long as you are facing north or east. ;-)

I think torch melee weapons would be awsome!

Torches are left handed, but maybe just add in a code line that says if you have a torch equipped then nothing can be equipped in the right hand. Or perhaps you can have your sword or book equipped but it just won't swing. Hell torches as they are could be left alone, and right handed torches could be added that are weaponized versions. That was you can have your utility torch for the left hand, and your combat torch for the right

DUEL TORCH WIELD!

When 2 clicked (holds 1-30 charges upon creation) it does a spinning motion (same as the whirlwind graphic) that does a GM detect hidden 3 spaces around the character. Also when it spawns theres a 10% chance of it being a undead slayer.

As someone from the pencil, paper and bag of dice gaming days. The D&D world a magic weapon gave off light. In the LoR world could have magic slayers get brighter the closer you are to creature type.

Could also tar and light the arrow.

And D&D let you use a torch for a weapon since 1st edition. When I get home I can look up the damage tables. Now I have an excuse to look back at those books!:)

that is a good idea Guardian KX. I feel like it would probably be abused, like every pvper having a....

*clear hands
*equip torch
*use torch
*equip last weapon

...macro. And making it really hard on stealthers. Not that I don't agree with giving Ninjas something to be mindful of, but it would turn the torches popularity into that of a trapped box and less of an actual weapon.

*rolls some dice*

how about you double click the torch such as Guardian KX said, with the charges and all, and it acts as the Dispel Evil spell from chivalry.... repelling lesser monsters closing in on you, and dispelling summons such as revenants? This would apply to player summons too in feluccia. But before anyone gets excited, there would obviously be a cool-down to keep it from being OP.

With a limited chance to set any clothing of the foe on fire? Can you see some enemy of yours all of a sudden burst into a large flame? <shrug>

what the heck ... this is just crazy enough to get implemented.

I voted yes to this, but I really would like to see them as an off-hand item that adds to the power of the player.

Maybe if held in the off-hand and lit, then would provide some kind of protection or skill/stat increase. Damage reflection in the form of fire damage wouldn't be bad either.

Being lit would be the key though.... and torches should burn down after a time of course. Maybe carpenters could make these special torches....

These things could work for lanterns too, though tinkers would make them and you would have to buy oil so they have timer too....

Ned, I certainly can entertain the idea of the torth remaining as a non dominant equippable [like a shield]...but I don't know how I would feel about it going the way of the disposable commodity [like tribal kin paint]. Tis a tough call...

what if just having a lit torch equipped would add +50% fire damage to whatever your current weapons damage properties are. So if you were killing some lich lords with a 100% physical weapon, and you grabbed your lit torch in the other hand, it would become 50% phys/50% fire.

maybe having a lit torch in your hand would cause undead to not be able to walk within your circle of torch light. They would still aggro you and follow you, but just not be able to get inside your circle. would be kinda gnarly to see some guy surrounded by 50 undead in deceit, just sweating bullets hoping his torch will last a little longer...

I kind of like those ideas! I tend to think big when I present ideas and hope that a portion will suit someone's needs.

Hopefully someone will use some of these ideas everyone is coming up with! these are gold baby! Gold!

Love the idea of undead shying away from a circle of torchlight. Would make for a nervewracking journey out from level 5 deceit hoping it lasts long enough.

wasnt the torch you get in a quest in SA supposed to keep the rot worms a bay - only time i tried it, it didnt do anything

Now that's slightly sexist... and who in LoTR was using the frypan as a weapon?? Wasn't a girl!

Though in Indiana Jones it was a girl. Same with Eatting Raul...

I think when a couple is married in UO they should each receive a clasp that fits around the ankle with the other persons name on it and the date married and a saying of their choosing. the clasp is blessed, and once put on can never be removed unless UO divorce paperwork is filed.... or a GM is given a "handie" behind Ocllo bank.
