I think it would super cool to have a president of sosaria on each shard i mean how awsome would that be!Could have a shard wide vote every year to see who wins it on each shard every year.Winner gets the special presidential title and who knows maybe devs could throw in a sweet mansion for the pres to live in durring their term in office.Perhaps the president could offer suggestions to the devs on the peoples behalf an such.it could be a neat lil thing to look forward to each year i think...Would love to hear others thoughts!!

I know some freeshards have town mayors. Big popularity contest won by people who forum a lot or big guilds holding down certain towns forever etc etc

I would rather have see a return of "the king" or a new king to see over the lands of Sosaria. This opens it up for storyline, events, etc.

There is a freeshard I play on where people chose to be citizens of a city. They can then vote for a king, who can set tax rates for vendors, select a town bonus applied to all citizens, give tax money (Up to a point) to it's citizens, and select what faction they want to be part of (It's Fel rules, but they have 3 factions - Order/Chaos/Balance) to protect their treasure, as the money the city generates from taxes can be stolen by an apposing faction.

UO could definitely benefit from social systems like this. It adds to community and makes for some very interesting politics and social interaction among players in game and on forums. And it does a LOT for retention rates.

This is a very, very bad idea.

Such a vote would by definition be dominated by whomever could vote together as a bloc.

And, let's face it. A voting bloc in UO would consist of the biggest guild, and the biggest guilds on most shards I have experienced are the ones most-associated with griefing and other bad acts. No voting bloc based on justice, moral right, and reasonableness will ever triumph in UO. Ever. The most we can hope for is the lack of a bloc for the opposite.

There is also the issue of voter fraud. Voter fraud has been an issue in Faction Commander elections for awhile now, the creation of dummy accounts is one method, as is the temporary Factioning of non-Faction characters. Now imagine the voter fraud in a Shard-wide election!

I could go on and on and on with similar issues.

Now, if you looked at these and thought "what's the issue there," then there is nothing I can say to you on this issue. Our frameworks are too incompatible.

One thing not specifically related to the issue of an election, though, is the following: The overall leadership of the main maps in UO should, I argue, always be consistent across shards. Our characters' stories exist along at least two vectors: Our individual stories (and those of our friends, guildmates, enemies, etc.), and the overall meta-fiction "epic" storyline. Those should, I feel strongly, be consistent across shards and by definition this would include who the leaders were and what kind of leaders they were, at least in broad strokes. (I consider this separately because this relates to however they choose the leadership, election or not.)

It largely depends on how much control a king or ruler has. Where I have seen it implemented, it was very well thought out, and your concerns and have been largely addressed.

I would go into great, great detail about how the designers of this shard got around it, and point you to where you could see how it works (and it does), but that breaks a few violations. It's an excellent system. I'll describe it in detail without naming names or posting links, if I have some assurances I won't get an infraction for it.

Regardless, and in closing:

It can work, and it does work, because it exists and many have seen it work.

Apples and mushrooms.

Free shards are an entirely different creature. A self-selected group by definition, one more subject to external controls.

One free shard I researched dealt with afk scripters in a unique way, for example: They herded them all into a room, took a screencap, posted said screencap on their forums, then banned all the accounts, saying they could restart the accounts if they "showed the appropriate Humility."

I cite this as an example alone. EA couldn't do this' imagine the outcry on Stratics, the accusations of unfairness and favoritism. And that's far from the only thing EA couldn't do that free shards can. I have no good reason to think that similar dynamics wouldn't play out in terms of the regulation of an in-game election.

And of course the free shards are by definition much, much smaller creatures.

I believe it to be a poor comparison (Apples and mushrooms, I assume?) to compare a game MECHANIC to a game PUNISHMENT - An opinion I hope I do not need to elaborate on. And again, you do not know the mechanics of how this concept was implemented, so I'd argue you may not be of the same mind if you knew (Or maybe you do?).

Though I understand your underlying point - OSI is certainly bound in some ways that freeshards are not, and in that we agree... But does that mean they must ENTIRELY dismiss ideas and innovations that other independent, unfunded creative designers have developed, tested, implemented, and have shown signs of success simply because it's not "from the source"? A source which could be better compared to a well that has run dry as of late?

So, a Guild or Alliance Leader title is not "big" or good enough for you?

No.

(imho)Most would probably ignore such an over-reaching anyway.

Because there already are several in-game mechanisms of sorts to allow most of what you want; called player towns, factions, guilds, and alliances, along with custom housing.

Build/Create yourself a player town in game if you wish to be "whatever_title_you_want_of Sosaria".

I think this idea should work, but the players must not take any power and must not be able to rule.

EMs should creates new characters to be president, with different personality. This way when players vote they choose a character that could do something good or bad, and EM will develop a story around the chosen character.

In this case all the shards will have a different president but everything will stay "fictional" without involving major game changes...

LOL. I play that shard once a week. It's nice to actually see players in the game also. :) Cant argue about the community. So far it's been a blast everytime I log on. Great system they set up.

I agree with Galen...

Players having any power like that would be BAD.

It's very hard to find players that actually CARE about their shard.

Great Lakes has a High Council made up of RPers who "care" about the community... it includes folk from "Player" run towns... however... it's sparsely populated because quite frankly there are very few folk who care for that sort of thing anymore and even fewer who even care about the current story arc of the game... Most just want stuff. The number of folk with any knowledge about UO or it's history is extremely low. I'd hate to have someone responsible for the direction of the shard who has ZERO clue about the history of the shard or game fiction.

Putting in an elected official while it may seem fun... can be disastrous... I could see terrible things coming from such an action... While yes if the "right" people were elected it certainly could be great... however the likelyhood of that happening is slim to none.

What would most likely happen is the leader of the group of complete "Children" would get elected with the mental capacity of a 2nd grader... and we'd end up driving a greater number of folk out of the game...

There are some who truly care about the game... and the community. Most of them are EMs and those who aren't are busy doing community oriented things.

It made me chuckle that Galen would say freeshards are smaller.

At least we can now say we're sure he's loyal to EA UO...

However it might be implemented President is a poor choice of office. Sosaria is a Kingdom and should have a King (or Queen). Kingdoms may have Prime Ministers but they do not have Presidents. Republics have Presidents.

Er, I don't think so ... not at all.

There are several ways any sort of titling can be done withing UO.

It's good that someone else knows about it. It's a shame we can't direct those who say it wouldn't work to it to see what it's like. And yes, it is nice seeing players. I swear, I see more on there every night than I did in my last year of playing an EA shard COMBINED.. And that's not even counting the bots. :)

I think it's a great system. Works very well. I ended up playing last night for 3 hours hunting with another player in Cove lol. We both died and had to run back to our bodies. lol.

On Prodo shards I can see where there may be issues with larger guilds that run the shards. Thats where pixel crack has caused such issues. Greed in the game would most likely influence the political influence. Say it isnt so :p lol.......

Giving the players a choice of what city they want to be a citizen, voting for a ruler, and reasons to be a citizen of that city ( Trinisc is related to logging) gave the players the most important feature of UO. "Choice" in the game and how they play their characters.
