Speedhacking

I think EA should not allow people to play with speedhackers on. I'm not saying they should ban everyone who uses them, because then we'd lose a large majority of the community, but they should simply not enable people to log in with the speedhacks enabled.

This would require an intrusive program, e.g. PunkBuster or the like, to be installed on one's computer. This was brought up as an option quite some time ago but was dismissed (likely b/c it would cause people to not play either b/c they were afraid of the information punkbuster could glean from their computer, or more likely, because they can't play w/o using cheats).

Lol it started with one now its a majority is it? well i never see speeders cept at yew mg fel... and its mainly due to well he runs it so i need it to compete mentality thats proliferateing this junk. Ea needs to under the table pay a coupple good hackers to wage cyber warfare vs the programs makers and users! thats the solution that would be best! Sadly they like all major companys are too darn cheep!

There are a lot of people that need to use these programs to play. People with dial up... not sure if anyone uses dial up anymore, but it used to help these players out tremendously.

There are a lot of people who are dead set against certain types of software being used on their system or that don't want EA implementing such measures for whatever reason. I've got a friend like that, he's against anything of the nature, even though he has no problem with Valve games through Steam. Think about that one for a while.

To be honest though, it's not helped by EA doing idiotic things like their whole EULA/TOS issues from last week in regards to collecting data through Origin. EA has done a good job of creating distrust among people who are having to use Origin in one form or another after that crap last week.

They do have certain things in place for most of their games - I'm pretty sure Star Wars isn't going to launch without some kind of anti-cheating measures in place.

In the end though, if they won't go after the most obvious of scripters that don't need any special software to detect and that have been reported time and again by players and mentioned by name here on Stratics, they aren't going to implement sterner measures through the clients.

lol if a freaken understatement to that attempt to justify speed hacking, lmao.
It's not exactly an attempt at justice as much as the reason some people use them. Seriously not everyone uses them to get an advantage in pvping. If you believe that then you're simple-minded. Its not as though all speedhacking programs are called "Speedhacking Program". You must understand this much?

I do understand that there are plenty of people that do use these programs for the advantage, but you can't say that it is everyone.

That is another sad attempt to justify cheating. I used to play on dialup before we got DSL (in germany) and i was playing on SP with 180ms back then ... NEVER did i feel the need to cheat just to be able to beat the locals who had 10ms ...

I often wonder how many of those that objected to a punkbuster in UO were already using punkbuster for other games they play.

If not punkbuster, something else - Valve has their own thing, Warcraft, Diablo II, Starcraft, Starcraft II, etc. all use Warden. Any major online game, whether MMO or FPS is probably going to have something scanning.

They just need a better control Server side than what they have.

Run around without using one of the more common "Speedhacks" and another player with a decent connection can see The majority of your movements/turns. Turn on said "Speedhack" and it Appears you jump 3-4 tiles everytime you turn to another player. Could be fixed server side without the need for punkbuster.

There are other programs however that will simply Find you a better ping route to the server location, which should in fact be promoted since the shards are dying and more people find themselves playing servers further away from home.

From the CC EC users essentially appear to be speedhacking also, so remember that when making accusations. (I was kinda freaked out when i returned a few years ago, last I played 3d client meant the "third dawn" client, so I didn't know about the EC, and a lot of people's movements looked like they were speedhacking while running around, at first i couldnt believe how many people were cheating, then i realized it's just poor handling of the EC's new movement system on the server. Speedhacking is also nearly indistinguishable from someone further from the server seeing someone close to the server (most notably, if someone has half your ping, their movement will appear a little glitchy to you in UO due to them being able to get at least 2 updates in for each 1 of yours, meaning your view will be skipping some of their frames of movement)

Should be said too even programs like punkbuster won't work though, as it's trivial to hide from them, especially with how the UO speedhacks work. (all something like that would do is, like every other game that implemented something like punkbuster, mess up a good 5-10% of the computers it's installed on and cause a lot of players to quit). VAC and warden, lol...sure..that's why NOBODY bots in counter strike or WOW.

UO style speedhacking though is generally just lag compensation (making your client act like 0 ping), which a lot of games have built in now anyways, so the real solution is to just build lag compensation into the client so the speed we run isn't tied to our ping anymore, that would double for helping those on slower connections actually be able to compete. (for all other styles of client side botting, just like sucessful CS/UT/TF servers, there's only ONE true solution...and admin/GM who shows up, investigates, and bans botters when paged)

Better be careful. Viper and Kas will start calling you the next speedhacking advocate.

Maybe you should have quoted the entire post. But no, Elden isn't trying to justify usage of speedhacking like your post seemed to be doing. lol

I'm not directing this next sentence at you Viper, I just thought I'd like to say it in my post.
