Furtrader NPC - Prices

I've noticed that if I continue purchasing hides from the Furtrader NPC in Vesper, the price of the hides keeps going up. But I did not expect that the inflated prices will hold after server down time. The prices have been holding steady for a good couple of weeks now. Is this designed behaviour or am I seeing a bug?

It's design, it's to keep people from gaming the NPC's to create huge profits, used to be players could buy from one and sell to another for a higher price. They made the change so that prices go up and stay up til after a publish goes in, in order to keep people from exploiting this to make Millions easily.

Regarding buying items from NPCs Shopkeepers in town, there are two ways items work: Fixed Price or Fixed Quantity.

Fixed Price items (e.g. reagents, weapons, clothing) will always be at the same price, but the quantity of stocked items will change. For these items, the quantity starts at 20 and needs to be "worked up". Once you buyout that item, and after some time (~15 minutes, I think), the vendor will restock that item with twice the quantity it had before (20-40-80-160-320-640-999max). The price always stays the same.

Fixed Quantity items (e.g. iron ingots, scrolls, bandages) will always be stocked with 500 of the item (unless someone has purchased some of course). However the price of these items changes as they are purchased. I believe the price goes up by 1gp for every 1000 items purchased. The price can be lowered by selling that item to the NPC (at the same rate, I think). I don't know how the price which the NPC will pay for the item is determined, but it is usually a significant amount less than what you will get if you sell to a player (at normal market values). However, there are some items that don't have an established place in the player market, so they may never sell.

Hides are most likely a Fixed Quantity item. Normal leather hides are easy to get (without buying them from the price gouging NPCs): http://vboards.stratics.com/craftsmans-data-chest/95330-tailor-skill-faq-revised-17-june-2009-a.html, a few posts in.

Also, if you bought the vendor out of all their stock the price rose. If you did not buy them out the price stayed the same. I am not sure if it is still like that because I hardly ever buy from NPC's these days.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

Yeah, I'm trying to train up tailoring and using up my gold. I would hunt from my hides but at the moment, time to grind is something I can't spare.

I am pretty sure you can get to 120 without using leather.

Cloth is much cheaper. You will get more bang for your buck.

Please check in the crafter's forum.

Yup, craft oil cloths to 107-9ish. Then go to the gargoyle cloth armor. All the way to 120 and you can recycle the cloth.

As long as I've played (start of AoS), I've NEVER seen NPCs behave that way, Kylie - though I wasn't buying much in bulk until a year or so later.

Every 1000, it ticks up (or down, for sales). Occasionally, you can buy 500, then buy less than 500, then buy 500 more at the lower price, but just means you're 400+ toward the next price raise. Eventually, you'll hit a point were you get two price raises a lot closer than you thought they'd be. Each NPC keeps track of every buy and sell, until it despawns (the shifts between two separate NPCs, that replace each other every few hours, doesn't count) usually from events (ex. when the ophidian berzerkers would kill town NPCs), a publish that substantially alters the subserver, or some types of server crashes.

This is actually easier to test selling stuff, than buying.

Oh, and the current markdown for selling stuff to NPCs, is 25%. In other words, if iron ingots are at 24 GP each, the NPC is supposed to pay 18. It was too easy to game for profit initially (Doom vendor with ammo and bandages, for example), then the first attempt to fix (making the NPCs never pay more than half of the default price) bombed worse. That resulted in the current system.

Maybe that's what I was doing but never had enough gold back then to hit that last purchase to get that price raise. It was a good while back (not too long after AOS launch) so my memory does let me down on occasion. Thanks for clearing it up.
