Unique Shards

I have noticed over the years that each shard has its own unique things. Chessy has a moongate at wrong dungeon fel side, not sure about tram. It also has a hole by marble island to drop right into the cave below, bypassing all the stairs. I also know that Great Lakes has a cave linking Brit Bank and Brit Moongate (tram side for sure). So I was curious what other odd things each server can claim. I find little things like this interesting because it shows a diversity in the servers and how people adapt and use them. So what other little oddities can each server claim? Also does anyone know how these things were brought about? I know that the wrong moongate on chessy was most likely from an event, something with crimson dragons...I imagine this is how/why most of these types of things are around.

On GL, in Fel Skara Brae, there is a funky colored moongate. If you go over the boat crossing and run west you'll see it. It is by those little hut type buildings.

I just remembered from my sonoma playing days..there is a portal to chaos shrine on marble island in the middle building in the nest. I remember when I moved shards I thought where the hell is that gate that's supposed to be here at marble.. lol.

Lynk does that moongate function as a normal one? That would be pretty badass if it did.

You often see those ogre corpses and weird regs/plants in the middle of nowhere but those things don't function they are just deco/leftovers from events.

Each shard has many "unique" features, West Brit Bank, the decorations at Luna Bank and each Fairgrounds is unique, just to name a few things.

The cave between Brit Moongate and Brit Bank on GL is broke right now. There's no entrance at the moongate... You can still run from the bank to the moongate, but not from the moongate to the bank. Which is dumb, because there's a moongate at the bank now if I remember right.

Great Lakes: Thurisaz's Monastery

This location was created as part of an Seer's Quest. Stand on the elevator and flip the switch to be teleported inside the ruined monastery. In the back of the temple area, a glowing rune works as an ankh and will resurrect ghosts. You cannot recall out of this location, you must use the elevator again to leave.

I found it long ago and have been searching for information or lore and have only been able to find the following. Unfortunately I cannot vouch for it's accuracy.

"Known throughout the land as a solitary figure, Teleburiel was the man who discovered the long lost monastery of Thurisaz located in the mountains northeast of Britain and south of the shrine of Compassion. The warrior monk was also known for his knowledge of daemons and how to destroy them. In his last days he was known to have just returned from a vigil that had brought him enlightenment about the undead attacks that have been occurring around the area of The UnRuled. He was also quoted as mentioning a new evil that was fast approaching and how he’d acquired a book that would be best kept out of the hands of those that served darkness."

It doesn't have all of the options. I don't think Ter Mur is an option. I forget the specifics, only one of my characters has that as my moongate rune.

This gate was left over from the battle between the Crimson and the Platinum dragons right before the Shadowlords were defeated. It has every option except Ter Mur available.

The underground passage broke at the same time the NPC who gave the quest to get a copy of the Book of Truth was removed. Mesanna curiously refused to fix the missing hole, and now the travel is only one-way. The GL EMs even did an event to move Sparky to the Moonglow Zoo and fictionalize why the passage doesn't work anymore. GL doesn't have a moongate at Brit bank, however.

Here is two links to books and BNN articles about Thurisaz Monestary and Teleburiel:

This particular quest line was left unfinished by the time the Seers were disbanded.

Great Lakes has two pirate caves. One is the "Booty Cave," which seems to be on all shards. And the other is very close by, and was used by a pirate named Secutor.

Great Lakes has several more large-scale unique features...

First, there is the Jollier Fairground in the northern firld in Skare Brae, Trammel. Along with the arena in the field just to the south of there.

Second, there is the gargoyle fortress of Xenve An-Amo-Lem which may be found to the west of the Underworld entrance on Fire Isle. Say 'Un Or Us' to enter, once you arrive in the library say 'Kal Xen Por' to continue on. The fortress is quite large.

Third, there is the Banner Teleportation Hub just outside the southern Luna gate. Double-clicking on the roses will take you to the banners.

Fourth, the meeting hall of the Royal Spies which can be accessed by double-clicking on the suit of armor in the West Britain Counselor's Hall.

Fifth, and most recent, is the city of Dawn which can be accessed from a pillar in a clearing in the Spiritwood Forest. Say 'Trust Worth Unity' to enter.

I am sad to hear that, I always loved that cave for some reason. They should fix that, that was absolutely a unique part of GL. At least you can go one way still, but brit is (was) pretty popular on that server, more so then most servers..it should be fixed.

I don't know of any pirate caves on chessy, but I am all red so I do not travel into 95% of the game..I know there are caves in bucs den but I think that's standard.

"A Blackened Tree" has a long and rather sad history. Next to the Orc fort on Siege.

I haven't checked in a long time, but GL had a talking apple tree near the Skara ranger huts. That was always one of my favorite places on GL.

It is called The Mother Tree, it was relocated to Trammel's Skara Brae at the urging of Lady Silverbrook. It is a keyword based oracle.
Thanks, Martyna! I only learned of the tree in early 2005, not long after I started playing, and never figured out more than a few keywords. I will have to visit the Mother Tree soon and see if I discover a few more now that I have a bit more information.

I've always loved the Mother Tree as well. Always makes me think of peace and tranquility.

And as has been stated I really wish they would fix the passage from the Moongate to Brit bank. Shame that it was broken. It's highly possible that they have NO idea how to fix it. Knowledge could be lost there sadly.

But I notice poor sparky often near the Zoo..... no tasty rocks to munch... I feel bad for him.

Back in the first years of UO, GM's and Dev alike played UO with us. They would change things on their shard of play. Later on Seer's added things for events they did too that quite didnt go away and added to each shards colorfull past. Forges and gates when things were blocked... It's my main reason I would fight to not condence the shards down. Each has these small but distinct features that make it unique.

Martyna's player already has my current shard of Great Lakes covered.

In fact, Marty....You may have to show me some of those places at some point; I've been on GL awhile now!

My former shard of Lake Superior has a High Council building in the northwest side of Magincia, Felucca (not sure if it still does I guess), a mage tower that was near Moonglow, Felucca and has since been moved to Moonglow, Trammel, and did have but no longer does have a unique building in the east side of Magincia, Felucca that was owned by a character named Nalatya something (sorry Nat's player, I've long-since forgotten that character's last name). Unfortunately, last thing I heard that house fell.

I'm sure there's more.

Oh, the Glowing Orb Museum near Skara, not a unique location per se but plenty of genuinely unique **** inside it.

You've been to most of the places, whether you remember or not, Galen :lick:

One place I forgot is the Temple of Mondain in the north part of the Feluccan Compassion Desert. Its a blessed keep.

Another is RedDevil's Auction tower (also blessed). Also in Felucca, and is in the forest to the north of the desert. Sadly, it hasn't been used in the better part of a decade.

The other two blessed buildings in Fel, the original Cove Merchant's Guild and Kazola's Treetop Keg & Winery in Yew have both fallen. Fortunately, the EMs rebuilt Kazola's as an open-air tavern.

Before no one mentions it:
Europa - Terra Sanctum (Lost lands, Trammel): There is a pair of two anvils and forges. One marked red and the other one blue with some distance between. Its a nice place to hold some kind of capture the flag game. Each team has to start with a shovel and a tinkers tool and a limited number of bandages. (I remember that we did that many years ago. Only problem: The team that met first the lonely silver serpent spawn there, died first and lost.)
Europa - Moonglow Beer Garden (Got lost during some event plots, but got rebuild)
Drachenfels - Moonglow Centre Teleporters : Those are somewhat web covered. First time I saw them, I thought: Wow. Since no one is playing here, the area around the teleporters became web covered. (But since they are only on DF it must have another purpose. :D )
Europa - Britain Smithy (I think it was during IGM Talos time, when those got redesigned. Europas smiths wanted/asked for a more comfortable place for their services.)

All the shards started out as identical, but as time went on various entities (EM's, dev team members, GM, etc.) added little bits here and there to the world.

A contest was held (someone please fill in the time frame, because I don't remember it) where players were able to design a new west brit bank for their shard. The submissions were voted on and the winners were built by Mesanna (and Draconi too wasn't it?). So each shard has a unique look to the tram version of WBB.

Catskills in particular has a few unique landmarks. I used to have a runebook for as many as I could find. We have/had a few towns in fel that had special static decorations. Kinship village used to have a tavern with special decorations (hedges, lampposts, flowers, before such things were available to players) and a sign post announcing the town in front of it. I also think there's a memorial stone from when the town was dedicated.

Sadly something happened to the tavern and it decayed, but the decorations were left along with all the furniture. There was a discussion and vote about what should be built to replace it, but honestly I don't know what ever became of it. I used to live on the outskirts of the village, but moved out shortly after the tavern fell. I'm ashamed to say I haven't been back since I transferred my keep to someone else.

I am not sure if this is on every shard, I never really thought about it until I ran past it last night, but on chessy we have a tower that is owned by messana, it has all kinds of crazy deco that isn't standard, and the ones that are have odd coloring. I think it's called Tower Of Evil.. not sure I will have to look.

I also should mention Pax Lair, while I never really visit the area, they have a lot of unique things. It's a player run town and many of the building are connected threw sparkles. I know that there are two tower next to each other that have connecting sparkles, but I believe there are a few more. They also have random things scattered about the area and deco a few tiles from the front steps. It's an old player run town, I would go and say the first ever.. but I can't prove it...so I will just say it's old. I know this much tho, they had someone who loved them because that area has a ton of oddities.

I understand how each shard became a little differnt, I was just curious what was differnt and what each shard could claim. I havn't seen Atl or Pac say anything yet, I sorta figured they would be among the top since they seem to be heavily populated and I believe were some of the first servers UO ever had. GL has a ton of stuff, I am going to log on there today and look around, I always liked GL you guys have a great community...but I am a chesapeake player and no matter what I do I always end up back on chessy.

I don't like the brit bank stuff, chessy got screwed on that deal, ours looks terrible. Atl I think has the spiral staircase, that is pretty cool, but most of them just look dumb.. like people just wanted to throw every deco item available out there and call it done.

Anyway this is pretty cool so far, thanks for letting me know what is up on the shards, I will have to go threw and check the stuff out.. I was thinking this would alleviate the need to go onto every shard and look around.. but it only makes it worse. Hehe.
