I have been playing for about 10 years (I'm fast approaching the half century) and in that time I've saved the grand sum of about 7 million, through what I think is hard work!

I'm seeing more and more posts selling stuff for hundreds of millions, where do players get that sort of cash from?

well its so easy to get gold now with the Champ spawns and such you can get around 500K in an hour or so if you really are lucky.
Then the items you can get from Peerless and other bosses will give you a lot of gold aswell.

Today 1b is like 10m was 10 years ago. - 100m is like 10m was 5 years ago.
It depends a lot on what you do ingame, and how much time you like to spend on it.

Like go do High Seas Fishing Quests, get the 120 PS sell it for 50-80m (its rare to get it but if you like fishing thats a good thing to do)

What Trader said, basically. It's not how much gold you have that matters, but how much gold others have which sets the prices, so aim to get the things even veteran players still need or simply desire and sell them on. Things such as imbuing reagents (the peerless spawns mentioned) but also things which are new or relatively rare; ET mentions the fishing scrolls as one thing a peaceful character could get, but right now the Charybdis items would fetch a fortune too as hardly anyone has seen him, and they don't appear to drop often.

It's not theory crafting either; I played from 2001 to 2003, and then took a long break. I came back to the game about a year and a half ago (2010), with literally nothing but my characters, some of which were outright naked as I'd given away everything. However once I found that there were plenty of housing spaces free, it was a question of sitting down and researching what people wanted. I made my first fortune of about 150 - 200m in 3 months mostly selling valorite ingots, gems and crystalline blackrock from mining. However, the largest single item sold was an EM Event one which proved to be exceptionally desirable (Firemans' Helmet)... Unless I get a lot of duplicates I don't tend to sell now as I'm more than comfortable, but even the most common and given away event item would prove to be worth about 1 to 5m though for rares collectors.

And if you don't want to get involved with bartering and all the hassle of being a trader, you can just wail on Tsuki wolves for an hour a day for silly amounts of pure gold. And unravel the items they drop; roughly it seems to be 1m for 10k residue and 2k essences on Europa. Get yourself a Luna vendor if possible and just leave your items on there... which reminds me, mine closed yesterday, I need a new one alas!

As mentioned before ... the main key of earning lots of money are other players.

I dont have too much gold, too.(At least in today terms, it might be around 10 mills.) The key to my personal gameplay is, that I dont need to have much money. With less expensive equipment the game is more challenging. Most of the time, I am around with my fisher. I have build him a custom suit with my imbuer. The raw materials would have been around 8-10 mill, if I would have needed to buy them. I prefer to gather them on my own. The main difference is that he now needs 2 instead of three e-bolts for a sea serpent.

I like to do the fished up treasure maps. One of my chests has 50-60 scrolls of alacrity. I sell one from time to time, if someone in the general chat is looking for one. (Mostly around 200k each depending on the requested skill.) My stash of magical residue has reached 40k. My bod collection is not that large, but I like to fill them sometimes. (I enjoy mining and hunting ore elementals. Thought I really should equip my miner proper/more accurate.) I have around 60 bods for a 90% chance for a POF. I still dont have that much gold ... but i simply dont need to have much.

There are many ways to gather gold, if that would be the main goal of your gameplay. Depending on your main/favourite chars, we might be able to give you more concrete suggestions for making money.

If you've been in the game that long, i'm guessing you have items that you think are old junk lying around your house but are worth millions

Is this a figure most people find accurate then....?

I can absolutely appreciate that there are some circles where this would be nothing out of the ordinary, and that it is the gold in the market that determines the prices, but surely your 'average' player isn't working with such a 'wad...? Just curious of course, in much the same way Lador is.

If you're still having fun, then no, you're not missing a thing. ;)

Instant wealth would mainly be from luck at EM events, or a spectacularly stocked IDOC. Slower paced but just as certain, growing and selling seeds of renewal, making custom imbued suits, for old-timers like me finding stuff you had stored away is actually 'rare and collectable'....

I've never got into the 'hundreds of millions' wealth levels because it really doesn't interest me much, I play for fun and my version of fun isn't trading/selling to make cash - despite a definite admiration for those who can do that well, I just don't have that sort of mind ;)
