There's a patch coming out shortly (it's on test right now) that raises the pvp spell damage max for a pure mage from 15 to 30. But you can't have any other magic types. Most mages play myst/mage right now, and I don't think the patch is going to really take much away from that template, but rather just add to some others. Of course, you'll have to have the SA expansion is you want a myst/mage.

Being that you're returning after quite a long time, I would rock the pure mage since you will have the basic knowledge to play it. Finding some imbued crap will help a lot too, cause everyone has it now days. Mage, Eval, resist, wrestling, incribe, med... something like that.

first off you definately want to verse yourself in the ways of imbuing. hang at luna bank and check out the gear people are rocking these days.

Faction armor is the best way to get yourself back in the fight in the most
cost efficient manner.
