New item idea - Time Capsule (Anniversary Item?)

Simple. It's a container that you can bury anywhere you wish. Place meaningful items in it (books, items with character names, etc), pick a spot to bury it with a shovel, and if someone digs in that spot in the future, they will dig up the capsule.

Upon "sealing" the capsule, you can engrave it with anything you wish (like Valentine's bears). It will also record the name of the player who seals it, and record the date sealed.

After unearthing a sealed capsule, you can choose to open it, bury it again, or just keep it as is. If you choose to open it, a warning message appears, letting the player know that when the seal is broken it cannot be closed again.

After breaking a seal, you can take the items inside and keep the capsule as a momento. The capsule can be used as a regular container, but due to the broken seal, it cannot be buried again (this prevents the original date from being altered).

I suppose maps could be made for these, but that'd make them more like buried treasure chests.

Please post suggestions and thoughts.

Well... I agree with your idea. A good one.

nice idea, but a time limit before you can dig it up is necessary or if someone follows you the capsule can be stolen immediately :D

While I somewhat like the idea, I also have the unpleasant thought of people putting large amounts of junk EVERYWHERE to dig up.

Also, people putting their capsules in a spot where someone else wanted to place one. And people specifically digging up capsules because they are bored and just want to mess with others. Not to mention, if you allow anyone to dig them up you're just asking for folks to ruin someone's fun event, ala Geraldo Rivera.

I could see making them somewhat rare, and a "minimum" timer on them that would be set by the user. That way, you could set it for, say, 50 UO years (about 4 or so real years) to make it far more interesting for those that come later. Perhaps the owner could have "capsule maps" that they can give out and copy, that turn into treasure maps on the day the timer flips. EM's could "pre-plant" capsules for events, which I could see as fun.
