I think there are three words there that you don't understand ... fully


The hermit isn't gazing towards the water
s/he is preparing to hurl a stick at the stalker trespassing with an easel

Hey! i'll over look the personal attack ...
'tisn't "trolling" to state obvious facts
or have a differing "perception/interpretation"

Hermits >choose< to be >alone< they don't suffer from easily treatable/curable "loneliness"
they go to town or strike up a conversation with the observer (necessary for the image)
and some (not all mind you) some are most serene WHEN there is solitarity and
*ahem*
"a lack of prying eyes" ... shall we say(Johnny Depp voice: "Hermit!")
and more to the point ... ^^That serenity is most easily achieved ...
when they aren't worrying about what some anonymous "viewer"(you) THINKS
about >them< ...
