What do we need to do to bring UO back to it's glory days?

Bring People Back?
Better Graphics?
Classic Shard?
Unity of Shards?
Get EA TO LISTEN! < I support that ;)

The list goes on and on.... For the past ? days people have made a bunch of threads over what is happening to UO. Will we die out? Will we return to glory? Will UO Shut down...

I for one do not think EA will shut UO down or let it dye...[ this and that]

So What do u think we should do to return UO to glory and get it back rolling? Please post your opinions! :) I support the one where it involves getting EA To listen to us :)

These two things are being worked on, we are just impatient.
Classic Shard?
I think they want to do this, otherwise they wouldn't have brought it up again in the last video. I don't disagree with it anymore, but they obviously don't have the resources. I expect it next year, which would be perfect timing.
Unity of Shards?
This would drive existing players away. Plus consolidating shards would create a housing crunch which would hurt both returning and new players, not to mention existing players. UO has suffered because of housing crunches in the past.

The number of shards are fine, they just need more people in UO in general.

Shutting down some servers is going to happen in the future, before the game shuts down.

It's not a matter of if, but when.

If they tell a bunch of players their shards are getting closed and they are losing their houses, those players are going to say "**** it" and walk away. Everybody forgets that many people are very attached to their houses.

I know why most other games don't do housing, but I think some of them also see the amount of angst involved with housing in UO and just plan on avoiding it from the beginning.

UO players will tolerate a lot - otherwise we wouldn't be here or we wouldn't keep coming back, but start telling entire shards they are losing their homes and will have to go to another shard, and those people will quit, and then UO will definitely close.

You just don't mess with peoples homes.

The DEV's have been pretty clear about saying NO to a "Classic" shard. First off 90% of people can't even agree on what "classic" is... secondly most want classic give me everyone elses stuff and let me play a total A** but have no accounting for it... truth is a "classic" server will never be like before because most those folk used to steal from and all WON'T be playing on a classic shard... they will be playing the regular PvM style shards where they are "safe".... from PK's and Thieves.

Secondly they said the will NOT be combining shards or shutting down shards... If someone wants to live where more people are they are free to buy tokens and move.

And on that note... While I myself am sad at the dwindling community I could not leave my home shard... GL's is my home... My characters and my RP revolve around the shard... I have history on GL's... I could give one toot about the history of RP on LS, Chessy or Atl... or any other shard for that matter... And you'll find that is the case with most folk. Sure I know folk on other shards... heck I do Xshard trading as well as doing deco and design on other shards... but they are not home. I've even done some spot RP on other shards... But I'd never move... Unless they created a shard that was geared 100% for RP.

I've mentioned before that it might be good to look into doing "Themed" shards. Shards where the design and EM's and even the Story arcs are geared to a playstyle... But I don't see that ever happening either.

One thing that keeps UO unique from all other games is it's Sandbox style... and community. The DEV's need to keep that in mind when they are adding to the game. And beyond that... the game is the community... without the community it's nothing.

Already came close to "trying" monkeying with One Shard ... Oceania
and that one was technically "still up" ...

Close ONE shard? Siege?(for rule set) Or yadda yadda yadda any ONE low pop shard?
boom! out go the lights ...

besides ... They've already said no ... no shard mergers.
*shrugs* moot point

:scholar: EA will never shut down UO ... loss of Glory.

mmmmm no, they >might< regardless of accolades and timing.

Could "re-release" it ever five to ten years ... Disney & Snow White
>would lose< the continuously(bumpy) "running/active" title ... but

who at what number of years(currently) is second place?

I would love to see that graphics come back and alot of the playerbase return.

If they had a old school server they should make it so people all across UO shards could play. [ 1998-99 pvp here we come :D]

While I agree that most people will not agree what constitutes a classic shard, and that many people will be disappointed when they don't get the PvP they think a new classic shard will provide, I think they brought it up in the last video for a reason.

They had answered the question and could have left it alone, but out of nowhere they dragged the classic shard back up.

Shard merger mute, think connectivity/Lag. They can increase the land mass to have room for everyone, no problem - all one big happy family. But what if: all merged to Oceania server? yeah, end of that story

dayyyyum! I'm glad I'm an optimist ...
otherwise that "fall of sosaria" lead in riff ... would be reason for concern

Maybe they want to use it as a flame shield again. A lot of the people that were adamantly against any classic shard trolling those threads relentlessly are the same people that have been complaining the loudest about the devs after they officially shot down the classic shard. The whole classic shard debate was a great smoke screen all of last year.

huh der whuat?

The ones "complaining about the classic shard" were complaining(shooting it down)
because it was a BAD IDEA
The ones that are complaining about the devs are complaining about the
BAD IDEAS and decisions they(the devs) are making (and the resultant code being dribbled in)

THEY GOT CREDIT for acknowledging the "BAD IDEA" of classic ... FINALLY
they were complaining that it was taking soooooo freaking long to resettle a long dead dead horse ... AGAIN
and they are complaining about them bringing life to the dead horse again ... by mentioning it again

YOU don't see a pattern?

DAYUM !!!

They aren't hiring devs ... quit trying to fluff your credentials

BAD IDEAS ... get flamed
we NEED good ideas
we NEED good implimentation OF those good ideas
ONE BAD IDEA ... being shot down ...
does NOT earn a FREE PASS for everything that follows ...
why?
cause they bring the BAD IDEA back up again ... we're considering ...
AAAAHHHHHH

Larry the cable guy brought up a pertinent point the other day ...
When a menatlly challenged student arrives late to school ...
is it appropriate to call them "Tardy"?

The Devs ARE LATE with some good code based on good ideas ...
and good communication
and good feed back
and good interaction
and a good GM system
and a ...........
good god ...
 trolled me ... good one :danceb:

hate all ya want but the single biggest way to bring people back would be to open a classic shard... They said it won't happen. I say quit, at the very least don't buy the garbage they put out.

They know what needs to be done, otherwise they wouldn't have committed to the graphics stuff, EC work, new player stuff, quest stuff, etc.

It's just a matter of execution. If they can get all of that or at least most of it done between now and this time next year, they'll get plenty of free publicity as all of the gaming sites write up articles on UO's 15 years.

Hell, they'd get write-ups anyways, regardless of the anniversary. The UltimaForever and GOG stuff had a ton of articles written, and UO gets mentioned a lot on MMO sites.

It comes back to execution. And communication. UO is not some kind of top secret MMO, would be nice for them to release more information. I know there is a segment of the community that hates the thought of UO moving beyond the 1990s and that is just going to bash them no matter what, but the rest of us want to see this stuff.

"In the future?"

The developers - well, Cal and Mesanna - stated in the last Video message, that they don't have a solution to merge shards right now. End of discussion.

How long you want to wait for it?

I prefer to play through this time - have fun! ;)

No gunna happen. Cal said the reason why it wont in one of the video's they did. Quite clearly the combining of shards will not happen, servers are set for the 27 shards we have.

There is no need to shut down any, yes it gets lonely at times when the majority of players on any given shard are out playing and not sitting in luna or brit bank. But that does not mean the shard if void of life.

East coast shards are 3 hours different from west coast shards and the original shards do have a mix of east and west coast players. Oceania and the Asian shards are another ball game... they are a full day and 5 - 7 hours ahead of even the west coast players. (try the time math if you want its a doozie) Europa and Drac ........ another time demention all to gether! When you walk on a shard and see not a hide nor hair of a life form other then the npc's are you really seeing the true shard? Not really. Let a EM event be anounced on the forum page and woosh! that shard 30 minutes before it goes off see the horde come out of the closet! To this, LOOK at the players. I mean look hard. Are they beginners?? Hell no. The vast majority are full suited to the teeth and mature characters.

What does that tell you?? Well one that the majority of them played there at one time perhaps even have a grandfathered home on the shard as well.

Many shards are looking like open fields of a new shard in malas, tokuno, ter mur, and yes the smaller house sizes of Trammel and Fel too are open but I bet you a bottom dollar you can't find a castle spot on 99% or a keep placement on 75% (this includes all shards)

You want classic go play Siege Perilous, its the closest you will get to one. Yes its hard, but you wussies have been spoilt rotten with the soft life. Ask tina or any of the rest how nice Siege is to play. It is hard to play from a bank box.... now who do we know who can fix that??? CAL_MYTHIC You dear boy need to get off your pillar and get cracking.

Cal needs to get off his tail and open the houseing ownership, its moot now. Siege is special and EA should never have made it 1 house per account, it was a factor in alot of players leaving. It was the constant taking away.... give something but take back double or triple of other things and not realizing the $$ cost of wanting that new plot but not being able to have it cause you needed another account was the limit for many.
No one is gunna beg for more houseing space. Well Atlantic would but they stole every player they could from the other shards!

Every dev team has come in with what THEY thought UO should be and tried to do it..... at what cost?? Players In all the years I have played UO (from beta) and I played every day mind you. I have seen all the teams come and go and leave the game in a shambles when they left... Bad and corupt GMs, Dev who wanted to mold UO into their version of UO... we have had tirants an saints in the dev teams. Bonnie and Cal have their hands full and yes I do see them having fun in making game content ... they are playing god after all. And Yes we are impatient... some are more so then others.

If I could have one wish for UO would be to have that players would stop the miser bit with making gold off the newest EM event item and go back to when it was the game not an object that drove them.
I'm so sick of seeing the gold become an issue in the game. Here I was back in 97 thinking 10k was a vast amount of gold in my bank. Billions now in gold. omg I had kittens when players were charging a million gold for a house! This has to end. (the last straw) Perhaps removal of any money from the game is the answer.

**Soap box in hand...... ** Take it from me kiddos we need to work on this one issue. We need new players and if EA and Mythic cant or wont its up to us. Invite a few friends. Hell give a months subscription for a birthday gift, or for the hell of it. The best place is the friends and family around us. (easer to plan your play time too) Get the kids into it.. have the wife fish for you.... Returning players need to be hit up too for help in getting more in the game.
Just remember your UO life comes in dead last to RL.

why is a classic shard so difficult to agree on ?

anytime 1999 or before works just fine, to me it's all the same.

my thoughts on this:

1. The "old glory" is gone. It was great, it was new, it was dynamic. It is gone. The discovery of its wonders cannot be repeated. So:

2. Perhaps, in order to tempt people to go play on some of the less populated shards, perhaps UO might consider offering to allow ownership of an additional house on an unpopulated shard. I have a feeling if this were done, whole guilds would do this, populations and interest in lower populated shards would increase, and it would add a "freshness" or new perspective to the game for many. I think this would, over a period of time, balance the shards a bit more.

3. Instead of making armour and weapons more and more powerful (which will have to end at some point) fix the bugs, make things work as intended, and provide better assistance to players who now wait in line for hours sometimes to get the help they need. More interaction between UO and the users.

4. Make it possible somehow, for a new player to start and thrive within the present environment. Starting with 1K gold and useless weapons and armor is a grand way to discourage people from playing. Let's get real, when it costs an absolute minimum of say, 20M to outfit a player to hold her/his own in a dungeon, the starter "kit" is not even worth laughing about. And, to add insult to injury, they have to wait four minutes before they can earn another lk of gold?

We don't need more upgrades......... we need what we have now we just need better management of what we have now in game.

(this is quick and dirty..... incomplete and probably off subject here and there)

Because people talk about classic shards being all the way from pre-T2A to pre-AOS. I even saw one person say that pre-Samurai would be fine, since apparently ninjas and samurais ruined UO for them or something
