Let's say someone's looking for a new game to play and checks out UO's website.
Wondering about what skills his or her character can have he clicks the playguide and then clicks "skills".

Greetings,

We have just recently completed a major overhaul to the Herald's back end content management system. Due to this we're busily working to re-populate all of the content within the play guides, until that time we apologize for this brief interruption and check back soon - thank you!
It's been like this for months. How soon is soon?

I've seen you post that number more than once lately and it just isn't true.

Cal... Mesanna... Logrus... BTeng... Mark... Supreem... Grim Omen... Phoenix... Bleak... and those are just the ones that post on Stratics occasionally.

Haha ok I'll go next. Lets say that same someone decides to download the client and sign up for a trial from the website anyway. They try the game and decide they want to play more. So they start up the (classic) client and click the account button to activate.....

Or even easier, just a prominent link at the top of UOHerald directing people to UOGuide.

EA is not going to let people volunteer like in the old days. I've heard there are some volunteer moderators on the official BioWare/Mythic forums (there are several dozen forum moderators there - some games have like 20+ forum moderators), but that would surprise me. I think they are all most likely handled under contracts. I know some of those moderators are BioWare/Mythic community relations people.

UO probably doesn't even have the manpower necessary for managing volunteers.

Come to think of it, UO staff don't even bother deleting the Facebook comments trashing UO or encouraging people to try free shards with links to those shards.

There are several problems associated with the website, here I've pointed them out one by one, most of which can be fixed without even knowing the game:
http://vboards.stratics.com/1962222-post1.html

I unfortunately got no response. I also suggested that the community can teach the game to whoever is currently updating the website or our selecting someone from the community and known to all of us as a community manager here:
http://vboards.stratics.com/1962486-post7.html

Again, I haven't received a single response.

:scholar: TRAITOR !!!

STRATICS FIRST AND ONLY !!!!

UOGuide has the major fault of needing just the right keywords to find some things. Try locating the page that tells how a galleon decays.

I wonder if we could all gang together and write a serious how-to manual for UO and get it placed somewhere like UOForums or here on Stratics. The reference links in the manual would likely have to refer to Stratics info most likely anyway.

We would just need everything turned in to an editing commitee to make sure it's complete. I've read a lot of forum replies to newbie questions that clearly assumes the newbie has a lot of knowledge he doesn't have.

UO's greatest fault is it's lack of a player guidebook. After fourteen years, there's a *lot* to this game.

Flutter, I've a lot of free time on my hands. Would you want to start getting ideas together on how to do a guide? Maybe get someone from Stratics in on it so we can avoid any plagiarism issues.

Getting anyone from EA to give a "go" response to such a project might be a pipedream, but offering them a finished product at the bargain price of free that gives them clear ownership of the guide free & clear might get them interested.

I'm willing to put the time into it. If we can find some others who can see the game as a newbie would instead of has an old timer would, we could do a hundred page or so guide fairly quickly. Say a year?

Directing players from the official website to any fan website for information is not a good solution, we need first hand information on the official website that is managed by someone whose full time job is to update the site with reliable information.

Japanese website is doing this successfully for quite some time, did you know that they released guides for the items on the theme packs?

Here's their Distillery guide: Distillery - ultimaonline.jp
Here's their Raised Garden Bed guide: Raised Garden Bed - ultimaonline.jp

While both stratics and uoguide had no idea what the signs ++ or -- on yeast did, Japanese players already had that information from their official website, and here is the good part, before these theme packs are released to shards.

Their site is up-to-date for High Seas too, here's their lobster fishing guide: Lobster Fishing - ultimaonline.jp

And talking about beginners, here's their Moving Your Character page:

Move Your Character - ultimaonline.jp

they explain moving for both clients with additional graphics for Gargoyle flying. They also explain global chat on their Basic Conversation and zooming on the next page for EC client. We have the same page on our playguide here:

Moving Your Character | Mythic Entertainment | Ultima Online

without any info on EC, Gargoyle flying and the list of facets doesn't have Ter Mur.

So, no, not a fan website, we need someone like the person editing the Japanese website. All we have is a single community coordinator who is responsible for three different games and only posts things like publish notes or brief messages regarding maintenance or a bug on uoherald. It is quite obvious that it is not her/his job to update the website, cause if it was, he/she could at least fix the year 1970 on the Live Events page which is there for more than six months.

Edit: Here's one of their beginner pages translated using Google Translate, also check the menu to the right: Google Translate: Beginners - Fighting - ultimaonline.jp

Not too complex with full of details, but nothing is left out either, just right for a beginner.

Japan have a Different 'Team' than what the US has, evidently it's a git 'er Done, no BS team as they have also shown Superior communication w/ their subscribers, consistently. My opinion: The US team doesn't seem to have the drive, dedication/commitment, direction or leadership it needs to make it anywhere near the Japan team.

Maybe just leaving the website alone is the best thing for our Fellow Player since it shows the real commitment level and the game's true state in the US. Eventually having UO only in Japan where resources are provided to keep it viable.

 that being the most recent "question" in this thread
Go to the main page, type ship, boat, ships/ or boats on the search bar and press enter, the Boats article will appear. On the right at the top of the page, you will see the contents of the article. Click on the ship refreshing section, you will see the rate which galleons decay.

The talents of Sosaria pages on the main page actually looks pretty cool and when you read the rest of the pages on the website, you'll notice that it was quite up-to-date back in 2009. Japanese playguide added on top of the 2009 content and also included screenshots.

Website and the lack of our own community manager are the two things I'm not happy about. I've still not explored half of the SA content, and I really liked HS. The latest theme pack is not my favorite but I think the encampment system has a lot of potential. Also, during the release of HS, I've received more than a pm a day from the developers until a problem about purchasing the booster is fixed. My favorite change was: the boats used to move several tiles at once like a board game before HS which is changed to smooth movement like a modern game, and this change is released to all accounts with or without the booster.

I'm sure that if it was up to any member of the current development team to fix the website, it would be fixed. They either lack the resources or have higher priority things than the website. In any case, -and since they read these forums-, I think it will be fixed soon, just trying for it to be sooner. :)

Sorry Fayled, your search skills are not quite up to par. The item search will only tell you about individual items, to find out about the much bigger topic of 'ships' you need to use the custom google search box, about an inch and a half nearer to the top of the menu.

Please try it and let me know what you think of the results.

Sorry, my bad habit of answering questions, thinking they're asked to find an information and not to prove a point. Tanivar's original question was about uoguide, so I provided the steps for uoguide and not for stratics.

For stratics:Go to the main page (same step), type "decay" or "ship" on the search bar, click on the first result.

Petra: lotsa focused (to stratics, yah!) "ships" ... err which is galleon? ... *sigh* "link"?

can a brotha get a :link:?

Look, both stratics and uoguide >UNARGUABLY< have a better understanding of, and data for, Ultima Online than EA's "knowledge base"

which on review ... WAS the tangent of the thread at that point, and in my view, STILL on topic re: the OP ...
*shrugs*

and it is >no-ones< "fault" that the definition of boat and ship is unclear as to the "larger" of either ... and whichever either is "most properly" to be applied to a Galleon or "Whale"
( see there:thumbsup:? I am unsure if the galleon IS the whale)

Just saying ...
ALL data banks should have an addendum as to which is what(and how fast they should decay) and indicate THAT level of "indecision" via the use of "AKA"(also known as)

Love the Memtat quote to coffee!

OK need to clear up something first... all Volunteer's of the past in and under EA have been on contract. That is Seer's, Counselor's, and any one else who freely gave of their time to the game. Oh a quick note on that, under these contracts if they still play the game they are still considered under those same contracts to be honored. This fact is a sword hanging over our heads to this day.

Now for the site being fixed...... with EA cutting staffers and the priority of a web page being lower then generating funds from what most of you would call a dead horse. (last pack is half baked and over priced) I seriously do not expect it fixed any time soon. They just dont have the people to do it. I mean we-UO, are one of many in Mythic's hands.

Just look at the GM que... to name a start to this understaffed place. How many named GM's can you say you have met?? In the last 6 months I personaly have met 2 GM's in game for help... not 2 calls mind you 2 GM's. I have gotten ether one or the other at any one call. (names not used as per rules and to protect the inocent.hehe)

Now if the EA brass would loosen up a tad on the purse strings and think with their heads not their bank balance we might get UO back on some sort of track. I mean if we can drop our starbucks for a cup of coffee from home the board can surely drop a few dimes our way for a few staffers who can fix things on the web pages.

No I didn't realize that on my first post, I got that you were trying to prove a point instead of asking a question on my second post and I thought you would give up if I'd just provide the links on my third post. A better up-to-date playguide with some quality in-game screenshots, like the ones on the Japanese website, will the best for the new players in my opinion, but I already posted it above, so I'm not sure why you asked it again. Forgive me if I dont reply to your posts again, its not that I dont appreciate the challenge of extracting the gist of what you say but you can see I clearly dont understand your writing style and it will be rude to reply to them without knowing what you specifically meant.

Camelot is getting a new website. BioWare probably has more people working on the official Star Wars MMO website, Star Wars community relations, and official BioWare forums than developers and artists who work on UO. That's not even taking a step up the ladder to EA, who definitely has the personnel needed to make even simple changes.

Somebody is working on the Japanese website. It seems a little odd that work can be done on the Japanese website, that BioWare can be doing so much with the Star Wars site and the official BioWare (and Mythic!) forums, that work can be done on Camelot's website, that EA can launch another online distribution network (using the Origin name!), but they can't have a few of their web developers sit down for a few hours and do something with UO's website.

SWTOR.com is running on the same software that UOHerald.com is. Even though the UltimaForever.com website is just a few pages and not a CMS like UOHerald.com or SWTOR.com is, they could use the UltimaForever.com website to spruce up UOHerald.com.

Take it a step further and bring back UO.com. They didn't make a WarhammerOnlineHerald.com website, they made a WarhammerOnline.com website. They didn't make a StarWarsTheOldRepublicHerald.com website, they made a SWTOR.com website. Stop redirecting UO.com to UOHerald.com, install a fresh copy of Drupal using UO.com, take the artwork from UltimaForever.com, and within a few hours you could have a major start on a much better looking and much more useful website.

EA has the resources, even if you use the resources within the BioWare group. All it would take is a phone call or an email from an executive asking some of the BioWare SWTOR.com people to spend a few hours coming up with a template for UO. If they are that busy, they have contracts with companies who do some of their web work, they could easily contact one of them and have them spruce it up.

UOHerald.com is what it is because somebody deliberately made it that way. Why it was designed to minimize the style of UO.com or UO's history or UO's style, why it deliberately neglects posting screenshots or up-to-date guides, it doesn't matter at this point. It would just be a bunch of finger pointing.

What matters is that something could be done about it, that EA and BioWare have the resources available. It also matters that somebody cares enough to make at least a nice looking UltimaForever.com website that emphasizes Ultima's history and Ultima Online itself.

Well reasoned and thought out ...

And based on that and stepping to a corporate conclusion ...
Bioware should use a stratics model
one gateway to all of "their" games
sub divisions as you've already laid out for them
Each sub set could have its own signature graphics defaults
(and customizable per user ... same same)

could even consolidate and interlink things like EM's, GM's and sales ...

could even incorporate your large backstep(bring back UO.com)
posts linked to account's ...
