So I Guess Arenas have been abandoned??

The developers talked about this idea over a year ago, we saw the buildings implemented, and then discussion about it completely stopped. There was nothing in the last two video Q&A with the developers. Nothing in recent patch notes.

Are PvPers being cast aside? Why has Felucca content been disregarded as of late?

I hope the Devs have an answer as to whether or not Arenas are still going forward, and whether or not they can code the important things we need into them (for example, no stat loss from Arena fights, special rulesets -no apples or no potions, magery only, archery only, so on and so forth. Also a betting system!)

Thanks.

Arenas were discussed in the previous video. They were held up because the person responsible for them is also the lead engineer and arenas are down the list of his priorities.

IF they try to go forward with this thing then all the comments like yours above will only derail it just like the classic shard got derailed.

The arena should be a very simple concept. 2 rules are all that is needed.

1. 2 players enter, 1 player and a ghost leave.
2. No outside interference can occur.

The rest should be left solely to the mechanics of the game.

Are you sure about that because I think it might be a more complex issue than you believe. For example, are there "loot" rules for the victor? How long does the victor get to stay in the arena before the next fight? Do both parties get booted immediately or is there a time limit or no time at all? Is there some kind of leaderboard system? Are there points that can be accrued towards some kind of arena rewards?

If I remember right, one purpose of the Arenas was to get people who wouldn't ordinarily try PvP to do so and maybe move on to participate in the PvP community more in general. If arenas are supposed to be that hook, then there needs to be an incentive for those curious players in the first place. For people who want nothing more than simple duels, there's plenty of avenues for that already both in felucca and trammel.

If arenas are supposed to be that hook,
IF that's what it's all about then they may as well stop now. Baiting people hasn't worked in the past and it won't ever work. And you are wrong in that there are currently NO avenues in the game for dueling which prevent outside interference 100% effectively.

I completely agree that arenas should be simple & are long overdue.

But I also have to say that I agree that the arena has to be more then just a common area to fight.

As it is right now if 2 people are serious about duelling it is quite simpe to find or create a safe area without interference. If that is all the new arena achieves it is a total waste IMO. No reason to waste Dev resources just to cater to 2 people too lazy to find a safe duel spot.

The arenas should be simple but they should also have basic options concerning looting. Maybe each person can check to allow or disallow looting. That simple.

But limiting things such as potions or specific skills or pets or summons/fields would just be silly. No way to get it exactly right to everyone's tastes plus it should simply be 'anything goes' as it pertains to the actual combat. That is the true & original nature of Felucca IMO.

Just another tidbit. In the video town hall Speedman (?) mentioned it was one of the things they actually wanted to get to in 2010 but they had some technical issues and that one of the precursors people who were interested should be on the lookout for was a character copy function.

Its a small team. Progress is being made, albeit slowly. They just have a lot on their plate. I look forward to hearing what they have in mind for how the system will function, and I look forward to testing, and using it.

I would like to see the Arena's get finished too.

I think it would help PvP a lot.... but I can wait.

I would like to see a number of bugs fixed first.

I still think the delay is due to a lack of developers, but Gamasutra is running an article about EA and others getting sued over a patent that covers multiplayer tournaments. I could easily see EA legal telling the studios to stop any plans for tournament-style play that aren't already in the game.

The point isn't to "bait" people into PvPing, it is to allow them a SAFE area to fight and practice their one on one combat without getting looted or ganked. There is no bait, it is bringing Felucca to Trammel without the griefing, which is a major reason many stay AWAY from Fel in the first place.

And you can't say these would be more effective by just being simple. Looting, stat loss, backpack/no backpack, all of these things are very important and should be able to be changed by specification. Also I think betting would bring a whole nother level to this game, as long as, of course, there isn't some anti-gambling rule that wouldn't allow them to implement it.
