PvP Arena ideas.

I just figured maybe we could throw some ideas out there for the arena. Maybe the Devs will take some, and put them in play. hopefully the arena will be active soon...

ok my ideas.

-Every hour have some kind of system that holds a pvp event. People who wish to enter it have to double click, or say something to join.

-Remove the penalty of stat loss/insurance when someone dies in the arena.

-after someone dies, have it automatically send the loser into the audience.

-Allow no pets in the arena.

-In the audience, make it so no one can cast or attack period. that way you prevent griefers.

-The winner of the event gets some kind of prize. It would have to be an item worth while to get people to participate, but put a timer on it. make it so the item only lasts 2-3 hours before it goes poof. just throwing this out there as an example, but a robe with 20hci/dci.

-Make it so you can challenge people to duels in malas/tram/fel/tokuno...wherever they are. If the person accepts the duel it tele's both players to a dueling room. somewhere they cannot be griefed.

-add options so people can set rules to the duel. like no potions/apples so on and so forth.

-add a broker npc. so people can put large amounts of gold/items down on their duels.

-maybe add a feature that lets people place bets on the duels. It's always fun to gamble!

-add an option to maybe allow 2v2...3v3...5v5...duels.

Anyways, those are just some ideas i would like to throw out there. I think the arena has the potential to bring some life back to fel. Even trammies could challenge each other and have fun. Or they could watch the pvp events, gamble, and maybe even give it a go themselves!

What does everyone else think? Any other ideas you guys can think of to shoot at the devs?

I think they're all great ideas, honestly. Would be nice to see some of it put into the game.

Agreed. All good ideas. I really hope alot of them get implemented. That being said I really hope the arena idea actually gets finished at all.

I think i would actually PvP in a controlled environment like this. Great ideas.

I would change one thing though - better rewards. Put in things that are on a timer (or charges since items still have the abillity to have this mod) but also put in the rare chance for permanent items. Unique deco, arties (can be currently existing ones), scrolls, etc. Various rarities depending on what the community thinks is fair. For example ... i would pvp in the arena for a low chance to power scrolls (since i cant get them myself as i avoid Fel).

The only thing i can't figure out is how you could keep this (regardless of the reward) from being a farmable system? I have two accounts and could easily duel my own characters to farm rewards.... That said it may have to be a system where you could only reward what your opponent is willing to gamble. :(

I think a ranking system would be beneficial as well.. I think arenas would cut down a lot of the trash talk that happens in General chat.

I think arenas would be a great opportunity to make the first cross-shard implementation in UO. I know the devs stated that allowing players on different servers to interact is quite difficult to do, but I just don't think there are enough PvPers on each shard to keep arenas alive for more than the first couple weeks. Being able to compete against players on every shard would definitely get my attention.

Also, there better be some sort of class identification system that does not pit mages against dexxers. I have no interest in dueling a dexxer on my mage. It's not that dueling dexxers is hard, but simply boring and pointless. It should always be mage vs mage or dexxer vs dexxer (although I think dueling on dexxers is equally stupid).

If they made it so you only got the rewards from the pvp event held once every hour people could not farm it. The reason they couldn't is because there would be a bunch of people attending it on the shard.

not only that, but they could make the items character bound. So there's no value in selling them, and with a timer on the items they would be farming something that's just going to go poof.

The idea of having a slim chance of a reward that doesn't have a timer on it is kinda cool. Although I think it needs to be VERY rare, and maybe just a deco type item. like a trophy.

Good thread. Well thought out ideas and communicated clearly. I hope the devs take these into account when developing them.

Similar to how snowballs and M's cream pies, make pairs of gauntlets - i.e., "thowing down the gauntlet" - that allows only those two combatants to battle each other, negating any audience interference. The "Gauntlets of Challenge" would be sold by Arena NPC and act as another minor gold sink for UO.

One would "throw down the gauntlet" via trade window. You could have a special global arena chat line - or a message that appears over Challenger's head - something like: "LeetPVPdude just challenged RivalPVPguildDude. Duel: accepted (or declined)."

Weekly/Monthly reward could be a wooden "rudis" wall deco with Shard name. Another gold sink for UO, for the truely skilled PvPers would xfer around the "circuit" attempting to win a placard from each shard for bragging rights...

No idea how much proramming any of the above would take - just dreaming:)

Of days of old there was the trusted smith to do repairs. This area could be the start of trusted BOOKIES to handle gambling. They would also hold the dueling players items to hand over to the winner. Chat will help answer if someone is trustworthy.

Trade window option that after each player OKs teleports both players to a dueling pit. Items in window are placed in a chest in their pit. The chest is double locked and each player receives a cursed key. Death teleports the loser outtside the pit. Winner loots the second key. Keys vannish after chest is unlocked.

Downside of this arena fighting is the greater amount of trash talk that would be on chat.

Yeah, trash talk might be an issue. They could seperate the arena chat from the rest of the chat. That way while people are around the arena and tempers are running high, the rest of the shard would not have to hear it.

The arena should be implemented at Yew gate, and it should be in guards. That way blues can hang out all day in the arena and flag one red to lure them in to the facility to be either guard whacked or ganked. OR they could build the arena in despise, and fill it with ancient hellhounds for extra fun.

I believe with my suggestion, this PVP Arena could be a success.

MMMMMMMMmmmMmm Sooo Goooooood

good idea on the ( item duration ) for reward items, to keep people interested, and making these arena fights stay in demand.

Hmm, it would be a little rough on us mages to fight a dexxer in an inclosed area. Maybe allow fields in the arena. A mage could simply spam it up with para fields. eh', but that wouldn't really be fair for the dexxers at that point.

A dexxer class, and a mage class might be a must.

mage duels only, duel pits located in mag, yew, t2a, luna, umbra, ter mur
when you enter the duel pits you get a gump of people wanting to fight and you get teleported to them tram or fel red or blue. have message boards with a rank system.
you can only duel on foot, you get teleported inside the pit dont lose items and you cannot use potions or equip weapons inside the pit. when ya die you get teleported back outside the pit. How hard is this?

You know what im talking about if you have ever seen the one huge shard (I wont name names) but that is how it needs to be.

All I really care about for the dueling system would be to allow 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, etc.

Maybe a checkboxes to select what to allow/not allow. Consumables, summons, fields, etc.

I really want it to show rankings. Like if you pair up with someone you get assigned a unique number and can make a team name. It should allow you to look at a standings board to see win vs loss ratios. You should be able to challenge people, or specify what kind of fight that you want and the system should look for other people looking for similar fights and pair them up.

God - that would be so sweet. I would probably spend my entire time in game doing the arenas.

There should be no items given out for winning duels in the arena, unless the teams wager the items themselves.

I don't think power scrolls, resources, or any of that crap should be given out. Maybe titles, or stuff like that.

I like all these ideas....but I think one that would add an interesting element:

Bets.

People like to talk trash in PvP? Put your money where your mouth is. Both people will have to put the money down and the winner takes all.

Alot of these wishes, while sounding good, are technically difficult to accomodate. Keep in mind the small number of subscriptions, smaller number of PvP players, and even smaller who would want in on arenas. It would have to be considerably more structured, much like WoW has. 2v2, 3v3 brackets, etc. is fine, but rulesets will have to be static. Not worth the time for EA to create all the dynamics. Wagers won't fly. The point system would be nice, along with title rewards, etc.

Again, good ideas, but my concern would be the farmability of the (currently) proposed system.

Whats to stop me from getting two accounts and just farming the rewards once an hour? Other people doing the areana may be a factor on Atlantic, and a few other shards, but i'm pretty sure after the first month or two activity in Arenas on Sonoma would be almost 0 ... with the only competition being other people using two accounts to farm it. :)

Not to mention how easy it would be to bot/script farm this once activity in the arenas has dropped (assuming the arena is every hour or "X" time, etc).

Not to shoot down the entire idea. Just the idea of a reward. I think it should either have to be a wager-based system or we need a more thought-out idea on how to run this where scripting or dueling your other account/guildmates/etc to farm it can't happen.

Wait, are you a developer for UO? Unless you are, you should leave the technical speculations to yourself.

Your comment is a matter of opinion, at most.

Just because you THINK there is a small number of people doesn't make it a fact. There are plenty of people that will use them and have shown interest. If you add incentives (such as non ganking field fights, bets, prizes, rankings, etc) ... people will use them.

Being the #1 Duelist on Atlantic would be a mighty fine title to have, just for bragging rights.

If you PvP you would be interested in arenas. Just sayin.

That's why I think bets would be great. Not bets that will allow other people to stake odds on who will win. But bets between players. The only reward is taking other people's money, you cannot farm with this system.

Plus, I'm sure it would draw a large audience if you announced a 100 million gold duel between two players.

I think spectators are almost a "must". I dont pvp but even I would be interested in watching people duel or groups duel. Would be a lot of fun and betting on it would be a blast as well. :)

I used to play a game called Subspace before UO came out (i know ANCIENT history) and our pro league games would have 100s of spectators ... other squads (guilds) scouting you for the next match, people looking to learn tactics, etc etc.

Maybe spectators could be put into ghost-mode (with color preferably) so that they do not exist to the competitors, cannot interrupt, and loading their gear/chars/etc wouldnt cause lag.

I don't think spectators would cause enough lag to be an issue. Unless someone was on a 10+ year old computer lol.

There are plenty of things that spectators can do to cause latency and choppyness on clients, not to mention just be a general distraction.

they might be able to make the duelers unable to see people talking while they duel. People spamming is the only thing I could see that could cause lag.

The only times I've ever really lagged up is running through ATL luna(all the vendors), and some event's where there's a TON of creatures, and people all around.

I can't see there being an issue..but that's just me:D

no classic shard is bogameal, should have been done long ago.

just sayin' ... no need to argue what era represents a 'classic time' ... just do it circa 1999-2000 and call it a day.
