Why do people in Sosaria die?

With so many legendary mages with the resurrect spell running around? For that matter, why is necromancy even necessary?

Why couldn't someone have resurrected Queen Dawn, or Clainin or any of the other murdered characters (story necessity notwithstanding)?

well technically your character don't die but is just "knockout", then the resurrection spell is able to restore your senses :p

unless this is now Highlanders Online, in this case to kill someone you have to cut his head or he will back to life

I have often wondered this too.

And more to the point, why do characters who risk their lives and lose (i.e. die) to fight the powers of evil in Sosaria pay the price of losing fame?

Are only the victorious worthy of fame?

Oooh now that is a question that taps the UO brain!

As far as Queen Dawn's death (or Clanin or Ricardo ect), I would suggest that a future resurrection type spell could resurrect her too. UO has always had a way of bending and recreating avenues to accomplish another task. *grins*

how about old age? Shouldn't some characters be suffering from arthritis and dementia? Tinkers could make hip replacements.

Usually, with a perma-dead character there is some specific reason they are perma-dead. Sometimes it's elaborate, sometimes it's just a one-liner. "The poison doesn't allow for the use of resurrection magics." "She was under a curse." "There was, simply, not enough left of the body to bring him back." Etc.

On GL there was some EM fiction for Queen Dawn but I forget what it was.

Usually it just takes a one-liner to explain this; then on with the show.

Also some people RP UO game mechanics death as unconsciousness, and resurrection isn't resurrection per se, they "just" bring you out of a coma.

As to why anyone dies? Ever? We have to assume that resurrection magics are limited. The magical equivalent, perhaps, of a super-advanced CPR or a super-high-tech defibrillator. They can't overcome all forms of death, just much of it.

As to why people lose Fame when they die?

If you think about it, they don't.

You lose Fame when you res up. If you stay dead you get to keep your Fame.

Were I to RP this I would say that the NPCs like to reward victory; or like to reward heroic loss when the hero stays down.

I could also say that it's a form of Humility; the people acknowledge that even a great warrior can lose.

But, honestly, in however long it's been since I started playing this game, I hadn't thought about that.

As to Necromancy? Necromancy lets you manipulate death and the dead. Not rez, so not overcome death. Just use it to your advantage.

I can only imagine a Ultima Online where age DID matter and with the passing of time one's own movements and reflexes became slower and less responsive AND where skills could not be transferred from one character to another......
But on the other end, if stats like dex and strength went forcedly down, int went up thanking to the experience.

Also, in a trade off, older characters would move slower but gain "extra special moves" and "extra casting spells" due to their increased knowledge and experience coming with time.....

It would mean having to let older character go, at some point, to bring newer ones to a fresher new life..........

Nope I am still around. Let's see Ultima 1 1980 was born.

5 Sosarian years for each real world year.

2011 - 1980 = 31 * 5 = 155 years old Sosarian Time.

This Old Sage is still going strong. Keep eating right and make sure to get plenty of adventuring in.

One end of the spectrum lies plot armor.

The other lies plot death.

Deal with it.

You don't die and in most cases you're not knocked out. The ghost is a person's ethereal form, the same jazz as an ethereal horse, or a dead bonded pet. Beings of note, when killed, lapse into the Ethereal Plane, when their spirits no longer have the ability to manifest, be it from sheer will or the assistance of a magic user, the person is "Dead" and their essence could drift into the Ethereal Void, where LB is kicking it at this moment.

Weird cause usual when I wake from being knocked out I don't have a new body, and my old body isn't lying there on the floor mouldering.

I have also yet to turn into a ghost.

Hail Sosarians,

Sosaria is a World born of, and sustained by, MAGIC!

Each of us are Bound to the Gem of Immortality, and infused by that same Mystical Gem. We neither Age nor Die so long as our Avatars remain infused with Power.

Those who seem to have died beyond the Gem's Power to Revive, are merely in a place or Plane of existence beyond our current understanding. One never knows when Powerful Forces may again Call those thought to be "dead" back to our virtuality.

Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! For one day the bell will toll, or the Trump will Sound, and Final Change Will Come!

The owner of Dawn's account said "s**t" in global chat... Since this was her third suspension for such nonsense, they had no choice except to ban the account. But, they couldn't do it mid-fiction, so they allowed her to die with dignity instead.

Now that would be hilarious! Put some code in that makes your mouse jitter/jerk when you run to simulate arthritis! Oh wait... they already did, it's called lag.

Unfortunately the dementia affects the real-life persona of the players as you can tell by reading posts on UHall.

Queen Dawn met the true death, best pronounced by Russell Edgington in "True Blood" with his southern drawl. I guess that makes us all undead immortals, otherwise.

Plus, UO doesn't have counselors anymore, and she would have needed a dozen after getting stabbed to death by her husband @.@

But otherwise, in PvM situations, I always ask the question, "why are people dying?" Hahaha.

I asked about the perma-death of characters when Clainin was killed off, and why he couldn't be resurrected. EM Malachi said that Melissa and Andrew destroyed his soul, thus there was nothing to resurrect.

Actually, UO's time compression is 12:1.

UO started in the year 324 (300 years since the Shattering), or 9/1997.

So 1980 to 1997 is 85 Britannian years on the single-player scale.(5:1)

9/1997 to 3/2011 is 163 Britannian years. (12:1)

Total would be 248, if you counted in the single player time.

And here I though that counselor link would be to a story about counselors and GMs erm....cavorting with each other irl. I can't decide if I was disappointed or not. It was nostalgic, still.

Queen will be back after the EA lifts her account ban. She auto logged when the GM showed up so no rez taken.

She had eaten all the children and puppies in Sosaria. Think about it, seen any lately.

Good Lord! I missed a few birthdays!

*Heads off to consider planning a fantastic Brithday Celebration which will certainly compensate for all the missed parties*

But hmm now which Shard could handle such an event? I wonder if I can find some Blackrock Candles.........

IIRC, the in-game explanation was that those that were duplicated across all shards by the breaking of the gem can perma-die - but at the same time, have had their natural lives greatly extended.

But, those of us that emerged since have our souls tied to the shards, not to the void beyond, and are stuck here.

In other words, WE ARE ALL MYSTERION (aka Kenny).

And Malachi believed them? *boggles*

Actually, I discovered the truth one night. I had played for hours, and just died. I decided enough was it, for that night, and finished off the last drops of my 3rd bottle of Port, and rose to leave the room. But I couldn't. I kept running into something, some force blocking my exit. I looked out the window that appeared above my head when I fell backwards to the floor, and I beheld the void, twinkling lights and blackness all a'swirl. And I knew the truth. There is a force field surrounding the world of Sosaria, into it's own universe, as solid as a wall. You shall not pass. It is only the souls that are spent, used up, finished by their fate, that do not return. And that night I was sure I was among them.

Someone could, but nobody wants do.
It's a little known fact that Queen Dawn was a real pancake behind closed doors. Think of Mom from futurama. All sweet and nice in public, but heartless and abusive in private. It was reported that on several occasions she drank too much wine and tried to cut off Sherry the mouse's tail with a carving knife. ;)

Didn't "die"

They were deleted with extreme prejudice

Ea will not restore a deleted character ...

That is the world we play in. :danceb:
