First.I appreciate your help for disastrous earthquake.
but house of my friend was swept away by the TSUNAMI.
His wife is not found now....
of course can not playing and paying UO.
I will maintain his accounts but can't afford to do all friends.

and well known, about nuclear power plant.these are stopped.
so occured electricity shortage.we have to save using.
moreover this will be lasting summer.

I remembered September 11 attacks.
EA?OSI? decided to stop decaying house.I thought this is very wise.
of course do not have to compare.but we all suffer from disasters.

so,I sincerely hope that stop decaying house in Japan.

Absolutely ! ALL Japanese accounts should be on HOLD at LEAST as far as house decay is concerned. UO is an escape or a hobby or a place to meet and greet friends, so it will be important (in that capacity) to many in Japan to be able to hold onto this diversion.

Please, please stop house decay for Japanese owned accounts.

I agree!

If unable to turn off for Japanese owned accounts, at least turn off decay on all Japanese Shards!

Yes, I totally agree with this.

I hope that soon a Developer will post something reassuring all those who play on shards that might be involved by the terrible disaster in Japan.

Aside from it just being the right thing, I believe the Japanese player base is keeping UO going. I agree

I'm suprised that they haven't already done this, can someone tell us if EAJapan has done anything for them?

if they know how,
if they get permission,
if it's 'their dept.' to make that call,
it Would just be the Right thing to do, regardless of rules, ya know?

Is there so much burocracy to go through in such an emergency and exceptional situation ??

There is noone at Mythic with the outright authority to just say "let's do it" without having to go through a thousand steps of burocratic levels for an approval ??

We did it for 9/11, for a goodly while as I recall. I vote yes.

Open letter to Cal_Mythic (sent today by PM)

Many UO players wish to have your reassurances the Japanese players' houses & accounts will have decay suspended.

One thread posted by a Japanese player may be found here: http://vboards.stratics.com/uhall/237894-plz-stop-decaying-house-japan-earthquake.html

With hundreds of thousands of people dealing with missing family members & the loss of real homes, the least UO can do is remove the worry their UO houses & accounts will decay over a missed billing cycle they cannot cover because the bank washed away in the tsunami.

Hope to hear something positive from you on Stratics soon.

What year do you think this is? 1875?

That said, while VERY FEW pay month to month, yes... putting like, say, a three or four month stop on housing decay would be welcome so that those who were adversely affected would be a step in the right direction.

Some games donated a million or more real life dollars to assist Japan. I think UO at the very least can hold off decay.

Just my personal opinion and it does not reflect anyone elses. It should not be taken as any sort of policy...

If it requires turning all house decay off for the time being, I would be good with that. Trust me, I do an IDOC or two... But those are players that left or try to beat the system.

I use those items to help others along. I never profit from them. Just saying.

I whole heartedly agree with this sentiment and will do with out house decay if that is what it takes. Until this is more settled... do the right thing.

Agreed! As someone who was affected by the 9/11 thing I do not see any reason that you shouldn't do it again for Japan. The only difference in the two would be that service members that were affected by 9/11 chose to leave home, The Japanese got theirs taken away. Have a heart and do the right thing.

Rather than calling some kind of bizarre pissing contest of which natural disaster is most deserving of suspending housing decay, why not simply widen the net to include the many Aussies (flooding) and Kiwis (earthquake) who could also do with a break from housing decay?

Need to convince yourself it's bad? Here are some of the best satellite photos yet from google sat. Move your mouse sideways to reveal "Then and Now" comparison.

I too agree to this, I used to play Wakoku. But I have a feeling some people are going to try and abuse EAs good faith as spoilers have done in the past, might be why it hasnt happened yet. Where there is 1 willing to do a good deed there are 2 willing to accept (the one that needs help and the one that will just take it).
Still a very good idea though.

The did it for us (US players) for 9/11. I see no reason they shouldn't or couldn't extended the same courtesy to the Japanese players. 9/11 was a horrible tragedy, but the disaster in Japan is much worse than 9/11 was in terms of number people affected. I hope this reaches the higher-ups at EA and they do it, no debating, no checking on 'is it feasible?', Just do it.

BBC news this afternoon showed mass graves being dug because cemetaries & crematoriums simply cannot cope. Current death toll is in excess of 8,000 with a further 13,000 still unaccounted for and time is no longer on the side of the missing.

I have family (plural) in specialist rescue teams who have gone from New Zealand straight to Japan. My youngest brother's firstborn (due in two weeks) will make his grand entrance while his daddy & Uncle are in Japan doing what needs to be done.

Some confirmation from EA Mythic would be appreciated.

Why would you do this and why this should help Japanese players?

Only if i think about there is 3 month period to reactiavte your account if the payment isnt possible, but why should it not possible?

Accounts are not saved locally and if the sad thing happend and a player died he cant play anylonger.

I would also not decide this here in the US i would decide this in Japan with EA Japan, they have a better view over the community and i would ask the community and playerbase what they want. There is nothing badder than that a normal house cost millions and millions of gold.

Why do this? Why would it help?

Because some people lost everything except their lives. They have no homes, no clothes, no food. I'm sure their UO life is of little concern right now, but it would be a nice gesture that when they got back they didn't lose everything in UO because of this disaster because they were unable to log in or pay for their accounts.

another thought... we all know about Lack of communication from UO. Possible they have done this already, just can't 'officially' announce it? Hard to imagine (not impossible tho) that they wouldn't personally be touched and want to do 'something'. If they really just don't give a darn, maybe UO really isn't for me. Time will tell.

With all they are dealing with this is going to be more then a couple weeks. It will be months just to get some basics back to being stabalized. It will be years to fully recover. On msn.com they had a story where a bank was robbed.....

The earthquake and tsunami that pulverized coastal Japan crippled a bank's security mechanisms and left a vault wide open. That allowed someone to walk off with 40 million yen ($500,000).
The March 11 tsunami washed over the Shinkin Bank, like much else in Kesennuma, and police said between the wave's power and the ensuing power outages, the vault came open.
"The bank was flooded, and things were thrown all over. It was a total mess. Somebody stole the money in the midst of the chaos," said a police official in Miyagi prefecture, where Kesennuma is located.
The bank notified police on Tuesday, 11 days after the disaster, said the official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
So EA definetly needs to stop housing decay. With rolling blackouts the japanese are lucky to have heat and power when they do.

Totally a good idea. :)

What's to remember is house decay is 90 days even if their account closed today. So EA have plenty of time to think about it before houses start the 7 day decay process.

To stop house decay for the Japanes players would be courteous and kind. For at least a few of the players, the knowledge that their game houses and possessions are safe may provide a tiny amount of badly needed comfort. Players work hard for their in-game houses and treasures, a natural disaster shouldn't rob them of their virtual attainments, even if it has taken everything else.

I confess that when I play I frequently camp IDOCs. Right now I wouldn't log on to a Japanese shard to take advantage of an IDOC if you provided me with the time and place of each IDOC. I strongly feel that there is a difference between an account that has been closed due to a lack of interest and one that is a victim of circumstances. Perhaps a temporary moratorium on all IDOCs across the shards wouldn't be a bad idea.

I've been busy lately and haven't had much time to play. But my mind goes back to the last IDOC I camped. I met a new player there--from Japan. I think of her now every day and wonder, is she even still alive? Will she ever have the pleasure to play UO again?

Tokyo's tap water is unfit for babies to drink after radiation from Japan's quake-hit nuclear plant affected the capital's water supply, officials said.

Radioactive iodine levels in some areas were twice the recommended safe level.

The confirmed death toll from the earthquake and tsunami has risen to 9,408 and more than 14,700 people are listed as missing.

An estimated half a million people have been made homeless and some 300,000 people remain in evacuation centres or temporary housing.

Japan has said it will cost as much as 25 trillion yen ($309bn; £189bn) to rebuild the country after the disaster.

FUKUSHIMA UPDATE
Reactor 1: Damage to the core from cooling problems. Building holed by gas explosion. Power lines attached.

Reactor 2: Damage to the core from cooling problems. Building holed by gas blast; containment damage suspected. Power lines attached.

Reactor 3: Damage to the core from cooling problems. Building holed by gas blast; containment damage possible. Spent fuel pond partly refilled with water after running low. Power lines attached.

Reactor 4: Reactor shut down prior to earthquake. Fires and explosion in spent fuel pond; water level partly restored. Power lines attached.

Reactors 5 & 6: Reactors shut down. Temperature of spent fuel pools now lowered after rising high. Power lines attached.

@ Ahuy: It's no secret I am no fan of Cal's. To be fair to Cal, however, he's already posted that they are on it - He just hasn't told us what was being done. Since Japanese players are requesting housing decay be suspended, we can only presume it remains active.

It's not that time sensitive, Houses won't even start to decay for 90 days after accounts go inactive.

Cal_Mythic has responded.

He says they have investigated the housing issue and "discovered there is no danger for the average player in Tokyo."

Furthermore, since "players have 45 days before their houses are in danger of being lost" - "there should be no concern that they will lose their houses."

Finally, he reassured: "HOWEVER we are monitoring the news and the state of power outtages as well as getting updates from the team in JP."

So, I guess everyone's probably okay for housing for approximately the next 45 days, well, provided they are in Tokyo...

Best I can say is that I appreciate Cal_Mythic's direct response.

which is all nice and lovely but he still HAS NOT RESPONDED IN THIS THREAD.

Oh, and boats need to be address as well. How many have already decayed? Please go ahead and stop boat decay as well.

45 days be damned - i dont think alot of those displaced people will be able to get their UO lives back up and running in 45 days, seeing as how the entire COUNTRY is essentially in RUINS.. howabout we give them a good solid.. i dunno.. YEAR before we turn that back on? Why dont we let japan get back on its feet before we go decaying their boats/houses. Its not like EA is in danger of losing money. Im sure EA is still charging those homeless freezing/starving/crying/dying people their montly subscription.

A year would be a step in the right direction, Elric Soban. Folks who purchased boats are clearly SOL.
