My thoughts are with them.

And also with the others due to get hit in the near future - there are a LOT of tsunami warnings out for other places this morning. Take care folks and remember, no matter how precious your things are, they're just things; YOU are more important. If you're due to get hit, get out of there and get yourself up high. Be thinkin of you.

Note: There are Tsunami warnings for all of Hawaii, Guam and the ENTIRE PACIFIC COAST (and of course the various island nations), as a result of this 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake (the 7th largest recorded since the magnitude scale was invented). There are estimates that the tsunami could be as much as 5 to 10 meters in the islands. It's estimated that the wave could reach Hawaii around 8 Eastern Time. The tsunami will probably be only 3-5 feet on the west coast of the US & Canada, but that's just a guess. However, many of the island nations in the Pacific have highest points LOWER than the potential wave size in their area. Note that a 3-5 foot tsunami is capable of moving hundreds of feet inland, especially where there are river mouths or low-lying beaches. WA, OR and northern CA are more in the line of fire, due to the angle the wave is traveling (but it can wrap around). If you are or are supposed to be at elevations below 30 feet, get to higher ground.

Tokyo took damage from the Earthquake, despite being 240 miles away (as well as a 4 meter tsunami). Sendai was hit especially hard by the combination of quake and tsunami. There have been at least 12 major aftershocks, 7 of which were bigger than the NZ quake a few weeks ago.

Hotels in Hawaii are evacuating their guests to above the 4th or 5th floors as I type this, and they are closing all airports. Wake and Midway are being watched to see how they are going to be hit, to better predict what will happen to Hawaii and the west coast.

One of my earliest memories of the internet was logging on every day, hoping to hear from friends I'd made on the net in the Osaka area, after the Kobe quake. This brings back a lot of bad memories in that regard.

The big news channels over here are saying the wave was 10m when it hit. That's BIG. I can't imagine getting hit by a wall of water about twice the height of my house. Hell, that's how far we are above sea level here, we'd get hammered.

I wish there was something I could do to help. Another year or so and we'll have two search and rescue dogs to offer. But not yet. All I can do is hope like hell, and that doesn't seem like nearly enough.

Two links, giving the ETA's for the wave to hit the Pacific coast in America. I hope they're of some use to folks. Thanks to Dor for those, via Facebook.

In case anyone is wondering of other player areas...

Taiwan appears to have been far enough to the SW to be spared from the brunt of the tsunami (it should have already got there, and the reports were of negligible wave height). Korea is on the opposite side of Japan, and was shielded. The Philippines might still get hit with a 3-foot tsunami (and as low-lying as many of those islands are, there could be massive flooding). The Aussies and Kiwis are primarily on the coasts that would be away from the travel path (or shielded by islands), but a lot of the tropical islands could get completely submerged.

Thank you for posting this thread. I hadn't checked the news and had no idea this had happened.

Have any of you heard from any of the Japanese players you know?

ShuShu, where are you?!

They just announced on the news here that there's a nuclear reactor in Japan that they are having trouble cooling down, so now there's also a warning out for a potential nuclear emergency. Time for some serious prayers.

It's almost too much to comprehend with the double punch of earthquake and tsunami. My heart breaks for the people of Japan and their years of restoration that face them. They will be in my thoughts and prayers for months to come.

ShuShu messaged me. He said he and his family are fine. They are a short distance from Tokyo. He mentioned that there have been earthquakes all day long. Seems to me that would be unnerving.

I do hope the nuclear reactor does not leak. How would people deal with that kind of emergency situation? I wouldn't know where to go or what to do.

Prayer is meaningless. Do something useful instead.
Prayers backed by faith can produce amazing results.

Only those who pray without fear or trepidation are likely to get the message through. Most ONLY pray when they need something, or have hit hard times.

Faith backed by action gets any results that are desired strongly enough. This is proven.

So...I pray for every family affected by this tragedy, and I have full faith that with the world helping...Japan will get back on it's feet again, even after such a terrible natural disaster.

I will take action on my part, donate whatever I am able to help, and keep on praying that Japan will be restored. I have faith it will be.

And they will stay in my prayers.

I don't think so, although that's not necessarily bad; it could just mean that he can't find a way to get in touch just yet.

Keep that positive energy and prayer going his way, and the way of everyone else over there.

If any of the Japanese players are reading this in the next few days i would be surprised. I wish all of you the best of luck.

the official missing persons tally is around 88,000 most are stranded and can not get home. But hundreds of bodies have washed up on shore.

This may be impossible to accomplish, but is there a way to post the character/shard of the people we know reside in Japan? I for one would like to be able to put a name to the people I'm holding in my thoughts.

Most of the people who play the Japanese shards are from Japan.

The magnitude of the event that has occurred is really astounding and shows just how insignificant we as humans really are on this giant chunk of rock.

A chasm 150 MILES long and 50 MILES wide has been opened on the Pacific floor, the force of the quake was 8000 TIMES stronger than the one in New Zealand just a few days ago and has been followed by a 6.6 quake closer to Tokyo (and set off a volcano in Indonesia on top of the tsunami).

It is a testament to the human spirit that we not only live in such areas of the world, but thrive in them and when such tragedy occurs, we set aside differences to come together to rebuild.

I live in the possible paths of annual hurricanes (just south of Tampa FL). The majority of my family just under a year ago dealt with the floods of Late April/Early May in Nashville TN. Stories of amazement and will follow the stories of tragedy and life will begin anew in the places affected.

My thoughts and prayers are towards the Japanese people a few I have been lucky to know though this game, and MANY MANY more that I have never met and will never meet, but that doesn't matter.

But for the grace of God go we, and through Human Spirit do we thrive through such difficulties.

we have an entire guild (Crimson Tail) on Baja that are Japanese people living in Japan that play Baja, usually before noon EST

*weekday mornings *EST* Crimson Tail has few people on. This AM there were 2 regulars that play. Unknown on the others*

Hi everyone,

Although Athos is very involved with the Japanese UO community, for some reason I believe he told me once that he is from someplace else... possibly HK (Hong Kong), SH (Shanghai), SP (Singapore), etc. Hopefully he and our other players around Asia and in Japan are safe.

Baja has always had a pretty substantial group of players from all around the Asian Pacific Rim.

Thanks to all. I'm safe and all OK and in your thoughts and prayers. The area where I live is not affected by the earthquake.

But this is a real disaster.

Thanks again, from the bottom of my hearts.

Someone mis-spoke - it is 150 Miles long, 50 FEET wide. Japan as a whole effectively moved 8 feet closer to California as a result of the quake.

But that's STILL a lot of energy.
