There are not enough rares, the point of rares

I didn't get in the other thread, so I'm glad you posted here.
I love the idea of Rares. I love treasures, hoards, real artifacts of the game (the golden belt, etc.) and all that. I love semi rares. I love the whole thing.

I do think that there's some things that aren't done as well as they could be as far as introduction, but that's a small thing. I'd like to see introduction expanded into new ways.
I think there's an even larger aspect missing, in that players can't use rare things to make rare things of great value. We can make necklaces, but we can't make them with those more rare gems from the gem cart, as an example.
Where's the special crowns and amulets and such, of great value made from special rare items? Or take them apart and smelt down the metals (that can also be very rare) and the gems as separate.

Anyways, I'd love to see the whole idea expanded greatly.

Rare items are a part of fantasy, and a part of the myth-history that spawned the fantasy genre.

The disputed leadership of the First Crusade depended in large part on the authenticity of a "rare," alleged to be the spear that had pierced Jesus's side while He died on the Cross. There were a near-infinite number of relics of various Saints kept; some real some not.

Add to that the fact that collecting things IRL is a natural tendency....And that, also IRL....Well, what are the great museums of the world if not collections of rares? Art museums; cultural museums; historical museums; etc.

There is, IRL, an infinite number of rares. It doesn't make each item less rare.

Together these add up to collecting things in UO being a perfectly valid, perfectly legitimate, and 100% awesome playstyle.

PvMers will always have more monsters to kill; why shouldn't those who want to collect always have more stuff to collect?

while this thread is still open, lemme ask...
Others are certainly more qualified than me, but for a definition
total amount/frequency = rareness & demand/availability = price?

...

I like rares.

I don't like that shard-specific rares can be taken off their home shard to be sold on another shard.

Rares... yes, Cross-shard trading of rares... not so much.

You asking what determines the price of a rare?

Then I'd say it's much more subjective than that formula. Among other things, there's "coolness" factor and utility to consider.

If you're asking for a definition of rare, then I'd again say there's a high degree of subjectivity. In general it's items that don't spawn perpetually, or that spawn in highly limited quantities (once per day, or a dozen or 3 as part of an event).

How long do you guys think it will take for me to get banned for this?
For this thread?

Oh I doubt it strongly that you'll even be sanctioned.

Even at my most critical of Stratics I must acknowledge that there's excellent odds they will allow for a little payback in this case. It'd be incredibly disappointing if you were sanctioned in any way.

I love UO.
So do I.

I don't collect rares, they don't interest me, but then that's why I love UO. It allows for so many diverse playstyles. It would be nice if the players allowed for each others' diverse playstyles too and not denigrate those that don't appeal to them or try to coerce the players of other styles into converting to their own preferred style

and yes, on this occasion, we'll let you get away with re-opening a locked thread, but please keep the rest of the thread within the rules with no personal attacks :)

The spirit of event items is as a token of participation. A little something for you to remember the event by.

By asking what's the point of a rare if it's so common means you are looking at it as simply an object to be traded/sold/materially valued and kinda defeats the purpose I think. It's cool that folks gets extra and sell it to folks that missed the event, but viewing event items simply as "rares" that should be rarer and hence made valuable by keeping them rare as rarities is rarely the point.

I remember the OP of the post that spurred this retort was previously of the view that events and the event items should be held in a way that everyone has a chance to get them...
