Well, I've been back about a month after a 5 year absence. I've spent my time, for the most part, working on my house, and training skills up on my old characters. My problem is... I don't know how to OUTFIT my characters. I don't know what's best for PVM... I've heard all this Sampire and Mystic Mage stuff, and I've looked into it, but it all seems so... Item based and skill based (and I don't mean character skill, I mean player skill).

Can someone just break down a simple PVM toon that's idiot proof? A gold maker? I don't expect to stand toe-to-toe with peerless monsters or solo champ spawns... I just want to get out there and do things.

I have a treasure hunter tamer, but I'm training skills (87...oy).

I have an archer/fisher, but it's not a bread winner, though fun (except for all the sailing).

I have a basic mule.

I have a thief in flux (working various skills - mostly a RP toon).

As for arties... I have quite a few, actually, mostly mage related but some warrior-ish ones.

I'm just looking for suggestions for a toon I can log into, go out, farm for a couple hours to work out frustrations, and then switch off.

I'm a vet account, 720, my gold reserves are...low...like 2m. So, bear that in mind, lol.

Thanks for help/suggestions!

If you just need gold, buy some forged metal tools from the UO store and sell them in the game. Then play whatever character is the most fun.

My main is a spellweaver paladin. No bushido, no necro, no mysticism, no archery....so I'm missing out on all the recommended skills for being uber-PvM-dude, but I have fun with the template and enjoy PvP so wtf do I care.

Need a few bits of info first before i could really give you a good answer.

Shard - needed to understand population in your situation
Are you in a active guild or a stand alone player
Time alotted to play per day
Expectations of outcome per day of play

Honestly if your out for adventure keep at the tamer/t hunter, the upper chests are a tough nut to crack alone but if your on a popular shard you might get friends to join you.

2 mill is not a low gold amount but if you use to tossing out hundreds of mills then I can see your quandry of supplying this end.

I would rather make the gold in game vs. buying an item for real cash. I mean, that's no different than buying gold, which is silly.

Catskills, might consider transfer in the future, might not... No active guild at the moment, usually spend time alone, winding down from my day - that could change. I play anywhere between 1 and 5 hours per given day, depending on my college/work schedule.

Expectations? Fun!

Yeah, I hear you about the thunter... Taming is a bear to raise, though, unless I find some good jewelry.

Jewelry is easy to find these days. You can just make it, or get someone to make you some. As for fun. Well it really depends on what you find fun. I have a tendency to make a simple warrior first, and just play that until I've made some gold and gotten used to the game again.

A tamer with a greater dragon is a good way to get into more challenging areas in the game without too much stress, but once you've re-established yourself and gotten back into the game there are more efficient character builds for high end pvm.

All the warrior templates reqiure at least a minimal amount of items , knowledge and skill behind keyboard to play them well. So i suggest something else.

110+ mysticism
110+ focus
100 hiding
75 + stealth
80 - 90 ninjitsu
100 + magery
leftover points into meditation or resist or spellweaving or eval or something else, meditation is best for cheap suit building

Mysticism + focus are for rising colossus spell, that thing alone can kill most stuff that is not peerless , even without 120 scrolls. Very nice for abyss spawns, make gold selling imbuing ingredients.
Ninjitsu is for fast travel while hidden ( animal forms, shadow jump), makes char easier to play, technically not needed.
Magery for support spells mysticism does not have, most important invisibility.
One free hand to be able to use healing stone.
Suit needed is 100 lrc, some lmc, somewhat good resists.
Hide and travel wherever you want to go in lama/ostard form. Once arrived, change to stone form for better resists and some immunity to poison, bleed and curse. Drop a rising colossus. Cast invis on self. Hide if needed. Watch it kill things. Repeat procedure until everything is dead. Collect loot.
To make it even easier, run the char in protection so nothing can disrupt your spells.
With a group, you can go nearly everywhere, solo you can collect all the keys and kill a dreadhorn if you are getting somewhat good at that. Perhaps other peerless to, didnt try that.

Above is also a very good char for navrey. Probably the most bullet proof for that, but not the fastest. You could get lucky with a tangle or 2, also the 3.0 sots tend to sell for a good amount of gold.

My only issue is training ninja on another toon, I know I can swap out with soulstones. I have ninja at 93 on my thief and it is an absolute HORROR to raise... Worse than taming, imo.

What if I did something like...hmm...

Mage
Mystic
Focus
Eval
Resist
Poisoning (I have 80 on a soulstone, worked it an alchy on my mule)
Plus whatever... And I will need to find powerscrolls, obviously.

I have some decent gear for a mage (orny, pendant, crystaline ring, necro glasses, aof, boomstick, scrappers, totem of the void, kelp legs, arcane shield...)

Oh, and the 'haven't played and you have all that' questions are answered with a simple: "you hit three idocs alone, you come away with a lot of goodies and resources - you should see all the magincia rubble i looted and used in my house!"

LOL. That's funny cause I thought the idea of somebody spending their time playing the game playing a "gold maker" template was silly. What do you plan to do once you have a good supply of gold? Then start playing for fun?

Poisoning is useless in pvm. But everything else you got makes a fine mystic template.
Btw training ninja to 80+ can be done using shadowjump. Med and focus make this even easier.
I did just post the most easy mystic template. You can play that without hiding/stealth , but you did ask for an easy to play one without any items.

The fun is making gold to buy the things I want in game, obviously. Be it items for my house, powerscrolls, gear, rares, whatever. If I want a particular item, I'm gonna have to make gold for it, right? Or do people just give things away these days?

Oh, it used to be that poison fields and what not helped in PVM... See, it's been so long, hehe...

You can actually combine both if you spend a bit of time thinking about what would be fun to you. If you have fun with a char, you will be able to kill serious things as you get better and learn what works and what not.
Suggesting to buy gold to make a pvm char is laughable, as you will probably end up wasting your gold on the wrong things . Just because your gold will not buy you knowledge or fun, but you will understand that later.
Let me repeat that, buying gold to make a pvm char is laughable.

Just to add my two cents. Believe it or not, sometimes earning gold and items "the hard way" is fun in and of itself - a great deal more fun than throwing $$ at it... :)

While I'm certainly not going to judge what others find entertaining, I don't know that building a FOTM template and following instructions for farming peerless spawns qualifies as "the hard way". :)

Second of all, I wasn't suggesting he buy gold. What if I buy a forged metal tool and then sell the uber high end things I make with it for a fortune. Is that the same as "buying gold"?

Yes, there is way too many items and modifiers around that it gets really confusing.

Ultima Online, having become such a complex environment with so many items and modifiers, could really benefit from a client Template Editor that players could use to try out all existing items before they actually look to get these items in the game.

They have one.

It's called "Test Center".

Unfortunately, as i see it, though many items are available on the test server it is, to my understandiing, not entirely comprehensive of all the special items one might want to "test" particularly when it comes to Event items or new items recently made available in UO.

Though, the test server might be a start.

I'm so out of it, I don't even know what a "forged metal tool" is... *goes to check out the UO shop*

edit: 100% enhancement? I can see how that could be useful, but I don't see it as a path to instant riches... :)

Idiot proof returning player temp:

Taming - like 90 or so use imbued items with high hci/dci DI & taming + 15 on both.
Lore - 115
Tactics, Anat, Healing, Archery
Use 80 vet and not resist....

Use the dog and let it tank, vet it while AI after AI try for a high mana leech comp.. The dog will also heal you & itself. Its idiot proof.

Then when you feel like rolling someone use a nightmare and a beetle, course dreads are good but the beetle will armor corrupt ;)

Read the uoguide site I trained my taming up on Siege to 70 in a few hours so I bet its way easier on a regular shard.

Actually no. With rot training taming is easier on Siege, and tamers are stronger in pvp on Siege than they are on other shards. The problem on Siege is that your pets really count as free "Siege blessed" items. On Siege a bonded pet should count as your Siege blessed item, and as long as they don't, tamers have, in my opinion, an unfair advantage.

It's either time or money, baby. Which do you have more to spare? Considering a forged metal tool probably nets you enough gold to fully gear out your character and powerscroll him depending on your skills.

I love taking out high level spawns and making gold off items and whatnot, so I understand the fun in that. But I just hate to see a guy creating a character as a "gold maker". Create a character that's fun to play and then go do spawns and whatnot and the gold will just flow. I have so much of the stuff, I'd love if there were more consumables like forged metal tools to blow it on. ;)

I think I decided on a simple-ish mystic/mage/scribe. I needed a scribe to complete my crafting skills anyway. I like having characters that have that one 'other' skill that may not be good for the overall template, but keep things somewhat interesting (like my pally with fishing), my treasure hunter is a tamer, my cook/alchy/poisoner has swords...lol.

I'll make do with what I got going and gold will make it's way on it's own. :)

Oddly enough, no one told me that... I decided it all on my own.

I suppose it depends on what PVM one plans on doing. I am not the type, as I said in my very first post, to stand toe to toe with peerless monsters. That's not my play style. I don't see the need to do something like that ALONE. I'd rather find other people to do peerless or champ spawns or whatever with.

I think I'd rather do something quieter, less involved or chaotic when doing solo PVM. Maybe, I don't know, killing some dread spiders or daemons. For that, I happen to think this...

120 Mage
120 Focus
120 Mystic
100 Eval
100 Resist
100 Med
100 Scribe

(using crystalline ring)

...Will do just fine for that style of PVM. I could even go wild and crazy and swap med or resist for Spellweaving if I were so inclined. Hell, I could swap it with Forensics and still do that kind of PVM.

Or am I wrong?

I didn't read the other suggestions, sorry if I'm going over ground that's already been covered.

If you just want to build up some nice gold, several templates are viable. Tamer, summoner mage, warrior, etc.

Treasure Hunters can make good gold these days; they greatly upped the gold loot from the t-maps.

Warriors with a good repond slayer, especially a sword artifact called Soul Seeker, from a dungeon called the Painted Caves, north and west of the Trinsic Moongate.

Any template that can kill demons or blood elementals in rapid succession can make good amounts of money quickly, in terms of equipping yourself.

For a mage in PvM, focus on 2 things first: LRC and all 70s resist. Next will come Lower Mana Cost and Mana Regeneration.

For a warrior in PvM, focus on Defense Chance Increase, Hit Chance INcrease, and all 70s resist. Then the rest will be determined by what kind of warrior you wish to be.

Welcome back.
