As most probably know who read my last post, I kinda botched myself out of my tower, being unfamiliar with the consequences of making a house Condemned.

As such, I had to scramble to move all my items before the house dropped. It was a big hassle, of course, but it also was an interesting way to inventory what I was storing.

Probably a fifth of my items were true bona fide valuables in the game. Things like my full set of Tokuno Dyes, my Knights Armor, and Vet awards. Backup armor suits. These were the first things I moved, in fact.

About a tenth were my day to day game consumables. Reagents. Repair Deeds. Translo Powder. Bandies. Basically the items I use to play Ultima Online and keep my character going. It was curious to me that such an important portion was so little in my overall storage capacity.

Another tenth were my lockdowns and decorations to make the place look cool. This includes functional things like furniture and add-ons. Again, I would have said it would be much more had I not actually had to itemize them.

So....

only 2/5 of my items were things I really couldn't be without. What about that other whopping 3/5?

A curious amount of it was hoarded items. Thousands stacks of fruits and veggies, for instance. Items that I collected simply because who knows, I might need em one day, and in this game, storing one takes as much as storing 60,000, so why not roll it up.

A major portion of the remainder, 2/5 at least, was flotsam and jetsam of the events and promotions I participated in over the years, but not quite as valuable as the items in that top fifth. Things like Demon Armor, Ophidian Orders, Event souveniers, Christmas Gifts, Halloween Pumpkins. I guess I was keeping them as a combination keepsake and investment, hoping that they would be worth something big in a few years... but I'm finding out the vast majority of trinkets in this game are never really going to be worth much, even five years down the road.

One of my biggest gaffes in game as a collector was to hoard all the holiday statues. Literally hundreds. I thought this would be a big ticket item and make me millions if I just sat on them for a few years.

Today, they average about 5,000gp in Sonoma. If anything, they've decreased in value.

It made me wonder why I keep so many of these items. I don't think many of them ever became worth all that much.

I also had a mystifying amount of disposable items that I really didn't need at all -- that my mule crafter could cobble up at any time -- like repair deeds, mortars and pestles, scribing pens, frying pans. A good 500 spaces were used for these kind of items so I would have the stuff at hand when needed to craft, without having to prep tools with my mule. Frankly, almost all of these items I just let drop with the house. They weren't worth the time and hassle of moving.

Long, long, long rambler short, I guess my point is this.

A good buddy of mine in my guild generously let me use storage space in his castle to hold my stuff in the meantime. Before he did me that favor, I had moved that crucial 2/5s I really needed to a galleon storage farm. As I was moving the remaining items... like 1500 items, I mused that if I did lose all of these items, it certainly would be a loss, but it probably wouldn't be that deep of one. In essence, its a ton of junk with sentimental momento value, but probably won't ever do more than just sit in secure containers.

We always want more storage. But do we need what we have already??

I try to keep my UO life as clean and clutter-free as possible.

I have a 14x11 (or an 11x14, I can never remember which) with about 1850 lockdowns (I don't have the +20% you have to buy from UOGameCodes.com). I have just shy of 900 free (897 or something). If I cleared out useless stuff, and they ever made a use for all the blackrock I'm storing, I'd probably have about 1200-1300 free. So that's maybe 550 items that I'd have to find a place for.

I could easily fit 300 of those in my various bank boxes, because I try to use as little space as possible there, as well. And if I really didn't have a house, I could axe my furniture and remake it later, because I use GM furniture made from plain wood. So that'd only be about 200 items I'd have to actually find a place to store. And I'd probably just take the opportunity to sell a lot of those.

The moral of the story: Don't be like people during the UO Alpha. Richard Garriott and Co. experimented with making resources depletable with a cap on the max amount of resources in the world at one time; depleted resources would not come back until the resources already harvested had been used. Trees would disappear after being chopped at for a while, ore veins would dry up, etc. Within a week, the entire game had been clear-cut, every ore vein mined dry, and all the players were hoarding the proceeds in their houses and not doing anything at all with it.

Around 2 years ago I lost a house because I placed one and didn't know everything I needed to about the timers.

There was an IDOC right next to my 16x16 in malas that I managed to place a placeholder for right smack in the middle of the space. I waited until everyone left to try and resize... big mistake.

My house was IDOC and I couldn't replace the house I had just gotten because the housing timer saw it as trying to place a third home (or something crazy like that, I think we figured it out in the homes and castles forum... you may be able to find the thread), even though technically I had just demolished the new house.

Long story short, I ended up giving the house to someone I kind of knew in return for letting me keep most of my stuff in the house until I found something. That 16x16 being the 3rd house I had given away in the year that I had started playing again. That was the only house that I had any trouble with, though.

I went from that house (that had some storage increase) to one of those pre-aos sandstone houses for a few weeks. Major downsize.

I think I ended up keeping everything that would have been hard to replace. All the furniture, plants, resources, little bits of deco... that all got dumped. I didn't have anything worth more than 5-10m at the time so it wasn't a big deal. I saw it as a chance to live simply for a bit.

Later on, a guildy got me a 16x17 for several mill also in malas because the house was right next to a few other guildmates (and the gm) and the auction they were running... and I'm now right back up to as many items as I had back then. :p

UO has always been about stuff to me. How much stuff you have. Cool stuff with stories and whatnot. I'd be disappointed to lose what I've re-accumulated over the last 4 years or so.

I am sorry to hear you lost your house; glad you were able to recover what you needed.

We all have some sort of pixel addiction to one degree or another. Recently I shared with my friend that I am in the process of trying to clean out my houses as they are low on lockdowns --> Hoarders Anonymous :p - asked him to please come throw things away for me as I am finding it hard to let go of even the littlest things that really I know I don't need. At times it's hard to seperate what we need and what we want ... until something like this happens. I'm going to try to remember your words and let them encourage me as I hover my curser over each coveted item, debating whether I *need* them or not. *Intervention*

Periodically I get rid of things I know I won't need, so my item count is usually manageable.

There's been a use for it for about a month... The Ophidian version of blackrock stew uses small pieces of blackrock as an ingredient, and the stew is made by a cook (after you do a quest with any character that has +5000 Ophidian Loyalty to get the recipe to give to the cook).

I was a pack rat, see sig now - but still thinning out. I give myself Free storage increases now. I could probably even drop a char & not miss it much. Started w/mining & t-map changes.
Some things aren't worth selling tho - singing ball, 65mil - trade 1 lockdown for 65? bah

Right now I have a packed full house on Catskills. It's a small house, but there's very few lockdowns available in it.

The rub is, I play Europa now. There, I have a single crate in someone else's house.

In the crate, I have...
Anything you can get by lumberjacking. That is, about 60k normal wood, between 1-5k from every other kind of wood, and assorted fungi, bark, switches, etc.

In my bank I have...
A reserve suit of armor (non-runic, non imbued) on one character as well as a bit of gold (about 600k)
On the other character I have about 10k of each reagent plus about 6k scrolls and even less gold.

I have no decorations there, no gift boxes (but a lot of tickets), no rares, not enough consumables.

But I've been having fun. I don't see any reason for me to get a house yet (and likely won't until my landlord kicks me out).

I've been working on selling everything I own on Catskills... but its a slow process.

i try to only hold on to crafting resources, imbuing ingredients, and true rares. everything else gets sold for the most part. i'm not fond of the idea of being a materialistic person in a game.

bank checks take up a bit of space, so it would be nice if checks above 1mil could be made. check binder?

A few years ago I and my son sat back and looked at all our homes ... all 64 of them. Now mind you they are all on different shards and different sizes. So we started on the top of the UO shard list........ Origin then worked our way down the list to the final Hokuto small.

Some homes were packed full and I must admit it looked like I was packratting alot!

Then we sat back and looked at all the items that were genuine keepsakes. Those added uo to about 3/8 the items over all. Add in add ons and furni it goes to 1/2 of all we own.
Then we got to shards storage houses.. He gave me that look of utter anoyance at all the
magnatude of items he would have tossed in a heart beat. Then he glanced at the shard as a whole and saw something that made him stop grabbing "junk" for the trash.
You know my son said to me ..... Mom here I was ready to toss out everything you had till I looked at it from where you sat. You run not 1 but 3 vendor houses. Thats tons of mats you need to have on hand for what you provide the players... Seeds, plants, lumber, ore, stuff that at first I was ready to mindlessly toss on you. That was till a player came to the shop and asked for you to please make her 10 benches and 4 stone chairs. She would be back in an hour and told me how wonderfull my mom was to be there as many vendors dont have any stock... but for hers... she is mindfull of cost and is so helpfull. This was just 1 of our shops.... and I know you been runing them all by yourself of late. I am not saying you couldnt trash some of this ... and you do have alot of piles of the same mats over many houses that should be given 1 home. But who am I to tell you what is trash and what isnt.

Now you have to understand my son works in an industry that a speck of dust could ruin valuable equipment. He is a stickler for clean and you guys out there dont want your gf's or wifes reading how well he cleans house!!

One mans( or womans ) trash might be someones treasure... yes UO has packrats and I for one have been to many a IDOC that was all trash... but to someone that was their treasure once.

I figure 2/3 of all we have is keepable. 1/3 is things we could get/make again. I wont say I couldnt use the space at some houses/shards as I have been stuck with many grandfathered houses that are very tiny. But No I wouldnt drop them for all the tea in china. My people have lived in them from nearly day one.... Besides Amesa would clober Fayn for draging in sawdust on his shoes and Noah would keep everyone up with his music if they all lived in the same house!! Dont even ask Tenya what she would do if they all moved in with her..... ***shudders*** No they are safer in their own homes!

I keep my house clutter free, which freaks people out when they come to visit and automatically assume I'm somewhat new and in need of funding even though I have several decade old vet rewards and all the best armor and weapons in the game. I use my house for crafting, private duels, and quick item grabbing and skill switching. House deco and rares collecting has never been my thing.

I recently moved from Catskills to Europa. From my former house with approx. 3500 items storage I went down to 1200 storage. This means, I dumped two-thirds of my stuff, and I don't miss a thing. About 300 items are purely decoration. I could go down to maybe 500 items if I'd dump the deco and some worthless rares. Oh, and a friend has a storage box in my house, too.

The reason why I "need" 500 items of storage is mostly due to crafting. There are so many and different crafting resources nowadays, that a dedicated crafter will need a lot of storage for his resources, despite of stacking.
But then again, since I only use simple non-magic items on Europa I do not really play my crafter anymore...

All I can say is: The less items you have, the more relaxed is playing UO. Unfortunately, with all the useless rewards and the versatile crafting, the game mutates even more into an item-nightmare than it has been with the Age of Shadows.

(You won't get kicked out, Farsight.)

I was like you - kept things manageable. Addons that were deeds I mostly tossed out as my crafters can remake them should I return. Everything else was stashed. 6 chars on main shard and 2 are not holding anything except gold in their boxes. So 4 characters hold most of my UO-worldly possessions pending my return.

Hubby and I are pixel addicts. We love items, we love deco, we love collecting, we love crafting, vending. We have several houses dedicated to various obsessions including a museum. Could we do without, well yeah, but I dun wanna :) We go through and clean out periodically to clear out excess junk and excess gifts, but still... well....

It always amazes me the absolute crap people store when I attend IDOCs. You go sorting through mounds and mounds of mongbat loot, crafting tools, plain dyed dresses etc.

How much could I do without? Quite a bit.

How much of my stuff isn't worth keeping b/c it is not valuable - very little.

I have unraveled most of my old weapons/jewely and only have the truely exceptional left. I never store repair deeds, crafting tools and the like.

I have two 18x18's pretty much full of items and 3-4 'storage' houses for thinks like holiday items and t-maps that if they fell - I wouldnt' really miss.

I have a secure with 30 extra ethys, one with over 100 blessed items from AOS launch, one full (125) of heritage tokens, over 100 12th anny deeds etc.

I just wish the devs would make some of these items stack and we'd be so much better off and there would be less items in game. I could honestly cut down on my storage by 30% if they just fixed all the stacking issues.

Thank goodness for vendors being able to store bods. I have over 20,000 on one shard alone and it would be tough to store in my house. 500 bods takes 125 storage so 20k would be 4000+ storage. Instead I have 45 vendors with bods.

Thats what 96 months in game will get you.
