it is what you make it and there's a lot more to do than ever before. when i finally returned to uo, i made it a mission to get back to where i felt i was previously (in terms of gold, skills completely, and housing). i enjoy to try to play all aspects of what the game has to offer and if you play on a higher population shard like atlantic, there's always someone to fight, or go hunt with.

You know I've got to say, I'm rather disappointed in the state of this game now. I was along the same lines as the OP so I downloaded the 14 day trial to see if things had were still as I remember them. The play style is the same as ever and most things are just as I remember them. I started playing in 2000 then quit in 2008 due to personal issues. I played WoW for a bit, I tried Everquest, but they just didn't hold a candle to UO back before AoS came out. However, sad as it may seem, this game seems to be on life support. I played on several shards, but my main home was on Catskills. Granted it was a trial account and I was playing as a new toon, but the lack of people and activity was rather saddening. It was rather disheartening as a seasoned vet, but as a new player, I doubt I would stick around after the free trial ended. Now perhaps I wasn't looking in the right places, but everywhere I visited was just dead. I can't speak for other shards, but back in the day Cats was full of people, hanging out at either Brit bank or Luna. I went to several places and didn't see a soul. Britain was like a ghost town. Same for Moonglow, Luna, Yew, Umbra, Tokuno, and Ilshenar. Went to despise just for laughs, and didn't see anyone for several hours. Another major issue I had was getting basic class items to use. Obviously a mage needs a spell book, but it's kind of hard to get one when you can't find any vendors that have either scrolls or filled books. New players don't have 1+ million to spend a a scrappers compendium, or any other enchanted books. I seriously could not find a full spell book after at least 3 hours of searching. Granted, with a trial account I don't have access to whatever the Stygian abyss or high seas stuff is, but you would think there would at least be some vendors worthwhile by some of the moongates or in Luna. There were very few decent ones, and many that said "Quitting UO, Cheap Stuff", etc. I was able to finally locate one but for a new player 20-50k for a full spellbook is a lot of freaking gold. A new player shouldn't have to hunt like it's Siege Perilous for items.

I had contemplated returning, but after my experience the past couple weeks, it just doesn't seem worth it. Since my accounts have been inactive since 2008 I would assume that all my former characters are deleted so in essence I would be a new(9 year) player as well. As sad as it is to see, it feels like UO is dying a slow and painful death. I'm sure most of the people that I played with back in the day are either gone or inactive, so there's really not much for me to return to. If the community was still as vibrant as it was many years ago I would have no problem coming back. Because for me it was all about playing with others, chatting, and just generally wasting time doing dungeon crawls and champ spawns. When EA bought UO I had a feeling that it would eventually be its undoing, and unfortunately it really seems to be the case, sooner rather than later.

My apologies to the OP, you should make your own decision, this is just my opinion from someone who is in a similar boat as you.

Odds are, your former characters are still there waiting for you. I've seen posts from returning players who were gone a lot longer than you saying that their characters were still there. Might be worth a shot.

Sure! Welcome Back! They've been running campaigns to bring others back as well, but I'm sure there's probably room for you. Plus the Devs are busy as always jumping right on those bugs on the few occasions they occur. And of recent they now implement 'boosters' (mini expansion pak for pay) which have been well received and overall, just successful. I see 221 posts, you been away from Stratics As well? Don't be a stranger here either, where you are free to post and express your opinion, no 1984 here.
Please have a great day, now get in there and play UO!

Since 1997, I've quit, returned, quit, returned, quit, returned, etc. more times than I can recall. Many accounts were lost along the way (each time I was sure that was it), and consequently I had to start accounts from scratch many of the times I returned.

Finally, I decided, what the heck, it's a lot less work to just keep my accounts active all the way, even if I'm not gonna be actively logging in for some time. So I've already prepaid EA for gametime all the way for the next 5 years, and have applied them to my 2 accounts.

(And next week, we receive a notification from EA, "We regret to inform you that we will be discontinuing Ultima Online with effect from next month. Thank you for supporting UO all these years.")

I wouldnt come back. Dye tubs are bugged fixed. You still cant cast as a mage in the town invasions. Luna lag is horrible. The game has gone downhill

Right now, i think the game is better now, than it ever has been. Granted some shards are a little dead because there's been a spate of incompetence by the dev team releasing tons of bugs.

However these bugs are slowly getting ironed out and i've every confidence the population will grow again.

It's so easy now to get a competitive pvp suit with Imbuing, if you just stick mr 1 and lmc 7 and LRC 19 etc on all your armor you can make a nice pvp suit, or meet a good guild and they'll sort you out with stuff for free.

Enhanced client is quite nice nice and easy to play after you spend a couple of hours changing all the default settings to something a bit more natural.

Dbase I can confidently say your account is as you left it in the system. With all the items you kept. We are well past the danger of any purge of old account info due to over population!

Catskills is like every other shard the time you see people is different then other shards, we have condensed down to lower populations on all shards and this includes Atlantic. Though Atlantic is more robust then the rest, you will find life still bustling on all shards.
Infact I was on Hokuto last night and the place was bustling with players all over the shard.
Origin was pertty good as well, Napa had its usual numbers running amuck. I didnt get on Cats thou sorry or you would have had a spell book in 1 minute.

I invite you to reopen your account and come play... I invite all old UO players to reopen just 1 account and visit .... I bet if all the people who read this board opened just 1 account back up just think of the boost the game would get.

Oddly enough, the playerbase is not far off from where it was back in 2000 when all servers seemed like they were bustling with activity. The primary problem is that the shards are now so astoundingly enormous. They just keep on adding more land masses. T2A, Trammel, Ishenar, Malas, and Tokuno. And there are so freaking many things to do. Factions, Champ Spawns, Abyss, Doom. The bottom line is that people are spread too thin. Back in the day it was just Felucca and the incorporated dungeons.

The result is that you are not going to be bumping into people like you did before while crawling through your typical dungeon. I remember running into people all the time just hunting in the forest. I go back to release though.

The result is that you need to find your crowd now. If it's PvP, find that crowd, PvM, find that crowd, trading, find that crowd, etc. The reality is that this game is astoundingly complex and deep right now and has a TON to offer any playstyle. But people aren't fighting lichs or elementals any more.....they're contending for Champ spawns or organizing Doom crawls or sieging faction strongholds.
