I read somewhere that you need wrestling or a mage weapon for DCI to take effect. Is this correct?
Yes. (Or weapon skills, or Defensive Wrestling.)I read somewhere that you need wrestling or a mage weapon for DCI to take effect. Is this correct?
Assuming you have a true "0" for your defensive skill then all an attacker needs is a skill of 20 to have a 100% chance to hit you, so basically the answer would be "yes" unless fighting someone with less than 20 skill.....(so only non-humans would apply)Not True. You do not require a mage weapon, Wrestling, or any melee skill for that matter to benefit from DCI.
The formula for determining chance to hit and miss has not changed. Given here: UO Stratics - Combat, it is as follows:
Hit Chance% = ( ( [Attacker's Combat Ability + 20] * [100% + Attacker's Hit Chance Increase] ) divided by
( [Defender's Combat Ability + 20] * [100% + Defender's Defense Chance Increase] * 2 ) ) * 100
The Defenders Combat Ability is the highest of one of the following: Weapon Skill (with weapon equipped), Wrestling Skill, Adjusted Magery Value (with mage weapon equipped), or Defensive Wrestling Value (calculated as the (Anatomy+Eval+20)/2). As shown in the Chance to Hit calculation, you can have a zero value for all possible Defending Combat Abilities, and still benefit from DCI. However, you will probably not notice the DCI benefits without a decent skill for it to support.

The answer is still No. You do not need any defensive ability to benefit from DCI, as there is no prerequisite to do so.Cloak‡1894965 said:Assuming you have a true "0" for your defensive skill then all an attacker needs is a skill of 20 to have a 100% chance to hit you, so basically the answer would be "yes" unless fighting someone with less than 20 skill.....(so only non-humans would apply)
I did not take away from your answer, I simply added to it.The answer is still No. You do not need any defensive ability to benefit from DCI, as there is no prerequisite to do so.
However, as you pointed out, the practical answer is "do not rely heavily on DCI for your defensive ability, you will not last long". DCI is only intended to reinforce your existing defensive abilities. It is most unlikely that anyone will have zero defensive skill. A mage will always have some defensive ability due to their Eval Int skill.
Edit: Ineffectiveness is not the same as being required.

If I did give that sense, then I apologize as it was never my intent. I see now the angle you were taking. I am glad we are on the same page. I am not on top of my game right now (i'm not feeling well). You did the math and clearly pointed out how important defensive ability is.Cloak‡1895058 said:I did not take away from your answer, I simply added to it.
I never said the answer was "absolutely yes" just that its usefulness would be highly limited (as I pointed out would have to be fighting someone with 20 or less points in an attack ability) Your answer was fine, but it gave a slightly false sense of "not having a defensive skill is ok if you have dci".![]()
Sorry to hear you are not feeling to well. And I figured it was not your intent, hence why I just wanted to add the math to what you had said.If I did give that sense, then I apologize as it was never my intent.
