Why do we enjoy killing other players so much?

So much so that it has kept us playing this game for 13 years+?

For me..it has always been the emotional responce from the slain. I love it!!

I must confess my sins from yesterday...But yesterday happened because about six years ago my wife was camping out an IDOC, which we did every day searches. After a few days or a week she said what's up with this house it should have fallen and took me and another friend to see it. In the house sign it said, "Name: Condition: This House Is In Danger Of Collapsing." It was hilarious because she spent hours there.

I renamed my house to the same thing and over the years I enjoy seeing people camping my IDOC. Yesterday, this guy was running around my house casing the joint. I decided I wanted to try out my suit and bow to see if it was any good. So I had to unload my bag of sending and a bunch of pvm stuff. I even had to go to the bank since I only had 12 bolts and I couldn't find any in my house. During this time the guy would sometimes invis outside my house and then run around it trying to see the mass loot I have stored after 12 years.

So I went to the bank and was out of bolts. I had to go to Vesper fel to get them for 5 gp and replenished my stock. Figuring he would still be there after 3 minutes I went back.

He was there and I talked to him. He was asking about my house decaying and how much stuff was in there and even went as far to ask if I had any mages to mark him a rune. So, in game I got mad (in RL I was laughing the whole time) and loaded my xbow and gave him a couple shots that took him below 20 health. He ran and the chase was on. He went north which happens to be a cul-de-sac shape of beach. I caught him and one more shot killed him. I was curious what he had on his body so I looted his bandages and put his rune marked home and the 300gp on the ground beside his corpse.

There is always a healer next to my house and he got the healer gump but didn't take the rez out of fear I would rez kill him. After a bit he took the rez and asked me why I killed him.

I told him it was because of his shifty eyes and his evil ways or something like that...

It is not the killing I enjoy. It is the fight. The challenge of fighting against someone who is equally skilled and equipped. It can be a lot of fun. Death is only the technical result that determines the end of the fight.

LoL.... It figures.... It's not about Skill or The Challenge of a fight for you it's about the whining in Gen chat afterwords. I'd guess that's pretty much the root of your ineptness for PvP in general. Pop out dismount someone who thinks there fighting a 1 on 1 & then Call in the gank lol.

I no longer play UO, but did as recently as 2 months ago. However, I haven't enjoyed PvP in UO in many years (since the world split).

What I *did* enjoy about PvP back in the old days was the social impact it had on the world. Sosaria was a land in turmoil. There were monsters in the land...but the worst of them were the evil human beings that roamed the countryside looking for innocent victims. Those "monsters", those were the ones that posed the biggest thread...and the greatest challenge of all.

For me, and my guild, fighting PKs was our role in the game. We were defenders of the innocent...Protectors of Virtue. Sure, there were trolls and ettins and such...but those are just dumb creatures. They were not genuinely malevolent. In fact, most of the creatures you would come across in the wild were merely out foraging, hunting for food, or just dwelling in their natural habitats. But PK's ... there was a force of real evil. These were sentient, intelligent beings that made a conscious decision to control certain areas of the land. And unlike lesser creatures, like ettins and liches and such, they were not lumbering idiots that could barely defend themselves. Far from it in fact!

It was the concept of good vs. evil, instead of good vs. ambivalent, that really got me interested in PvP. Once that was gone, so was the allure of PvP in Ultima Online for me.

Never been great at PvP, but I loved stealing from people. The stalking, the backpack opening, the chase that often ensued after I had made the steal. Kind of feel I have been there and done that nowdays. It was still good even 2 years ago when there were several major guilds in fel. The social interactions, the wit and banter, the 'gimme back that scroll you git!' Now its the same dumb donkeys all the time with 2 / 3 guilds in fel. Trying to go more tram orientated in my stealing but thats not working out for me. Currently wandering about T2A and a few dungeons with a smugglers edge.

This. It's about the fight for me. I don't go out thrill-killing or gate fighting (very often), but I also don't condemn those who do. In fact any time I'm doing activities in Fel (which is where I spend most of my time anyway) I'm always ready for a fight if someone happens to find me. Champ spawns and harrowers are 10x more memorable if your group had to fight others and defend it to get it done.

Nothing, i dont know, but i think iam too old, in the past i only do PvP all day long, now iam boored of it, boored of the style, the running, always the same people and the overpowered mystic gives me the rest to totally quit the pvp game.

But also the bad client side movement of players, for me in the EC and for other who think iam speedhacking because of the jumping, the movement of players in both clients should be reviewed soon!

I hate saying it, but I think its the response from others too. Or rubbing it in is even better. I usually have to fight out numbered, which usually means death to me and my couple guildies. The times we do win though is incredibly satisfying. Its those times are what myself as a PvPer strive for.

PvP in UO is unique, I have played all the other games of this gender and none of them come close to the PvP you get in UO. Its fast and unpredictable, just when you think you have nailed your target he pulls a feather out his ass and he is back in the fight.

You get this real sense of wickedness, after defeating your enemy and your standing over his corps looting his most prised possessions. More so if the battle was un-consensual and the poor fela never knew what him.

Many have quit UO to only find themselves coming back time and time again. It may look tired and old graphically, but for shear adrenaline rush game play there is no other that comes close.

I dunno, I haven't done it in years, I just don't have the money anymore. Even with imbuing it's a hassle to get a perfect suit, plus dear lord those 120 scrolls.

For me it's very simple. The thrill of fighting a real person not some computer AI. There is nothing fun about killing the same monster 10000 times. Every fight with a person is a little different, they can always surprise you unlike mobs.

For me games have always been more fun when playing against someone else. It doesn't matter if it's a FPS, RTS, MMO or even a nintendo game like Mario Kart.

I have been killing people far longer than there was general chat. Poor Peon..always the victim. I am sorry that you just don't get it.

Last time I PvPed was in 2006 with my traditional wrestler mage. I played an assassin for a while since 2003 (150 SOLO kills). I consider myself to be familiar with the whole Fel scene. Without trying to sound like a cry baby: I DO NOT understand PvP today. I do great amount of spawns but I am not afraid to say that nowadays if someone attacks me most of the times I do not even resist. I do not even understand why I died. It sounds stupid but with all 70's resists I seem to die in a 3 spell combo or getting stuck to a guy carrying a katana from 1 screen away (ATL is full of those). Was allied for a while too to a "popular" PVP guild (as a spawn member) and I remember everyone mentioned in Vent that they were running 2 programs to get an "edge". I have also noticed many mages chasing me and casting walls in front of me while running. I know I have a good computer, my ping is great and my internet connection is very good. I also play during non laggy hours. It is ridiculous, I will not bother with PvP unless something is done. I know I am not alone in this...

I like strategic field fighting between mages. That's the best part of pvp. Your tactics against someone else.

Its not hard to cast a wall in front of someone, so I have no idea what you mean. As far as not defending yourself thats your thing. I however find the PvP one of a kind. And fun as hell.

Although some of you guys' I is worse than Miasma's AI, most of the time the fights with other humans are exhillaratingly fun and smart. People come up constantly with new tweaks to their templates that surprise and require new tactics. UO is the most complex and deep game possible in that sense and truly allows for some wicked creativity. Now, I would have to acknowledge that a 4 to 1 gank is not creative, that's just wicked. Being on the receiving end of such a gank is not so fun, but then again, when it is your turn to destroy someone with a 4 to 1 gank... ;-)

it is finding the newest combination of skill, skills, toys and just clever application of various combinations that gives me my kick. (with the OooOOOOooOOOOo prize at the end being the crown on some hard work)

Hmmm casting walls while running and the other person is one screen away? There is many people (flying out there). As for the warriors forget it, under ideal conditions there was never a way for a warrior to catch up to a running mage and kill him. This is why people were using poisoning weps or dismounting. Apparently some things changed today...

Do not get me wrong I never said that PvP is not exciting. The current state seems to be rediculous though.

For me the kick in PvP is the challenge of a good fight. Any game versus the computer boils down to figuring out the AI, once that is done you usually can beat the AI every time by repeating the same process. This gets boring and you invent ways to make it more "fun" usually in the form of trying tactics which are not the most efficient just to see how they pan out.

PvP at least offers some surprises.

We currently have some folks who have come over to "take over" our shard. We are enjoying showing them why there was no-one left to fight on our shard.

The response from their dead is what makes me laugh and look forward to the next battle.

If you have been cussed at in 146 different languages, in this game, you know you have done well. :thumbup1:

Quite simply, that a human opponent generally offers more challenge and diversity, than an AI opponent ever can. Each encounter against another human player is unique and can rarely be repeated.

You can't interact with an AI opponent in as many ways as you can with a human opponent. I've never had Christmas cards sent to me by an AI opponent either, even one who was considered a mortal enemy in the game. The best PvP'ers always understood it was a "game" though and nothing personal.

Game mechanics changed and the types of players changed though, so I lost the "kick" that PvP provided, even though I've never been bothered if the outcome was win, lose or draw.

I really enjy to by my dexxer a new waepon and to try it in pvp.
If i try it on a mop i dont see really if its good or not.I figured out some waepons are better for pvm some are better for pvp.I tryed olso other online games in pvp but uo pvp is best.
With my tamer have i killed 4500 pks and im a bit proud of this.I cant play level grind games anymore to kill 1000 mops to gain.Samedo ice ogrelord and they have fun to kill this mop 300 times and to harvest the monay and bring it to the bank.I have more fun if i see at yew gate a blue runing from a red to the guard and he cant call the guard becasue he attacked the red first that i kill the red with tamer and help him. Many have a tamer but to know how to get the right skill for a pvp tamer the most dont know.Mystisism is to powerfull and becasue of this i dont pvp with my dexxer anymore. The plaque spell makes to much damage. So i decided to be bountyhunter in uo.For a mmo the pvp in uo is so fast and i like this.Someone told me waht he has reached in wow or other in Everquest.I told them but the most dificult kill isnt to kill a mop or a raid mop the most difficult kill is to kill playerkiller.
The mop behave like each time like iceoggrelord but a playerkiler you dont know if he turn left or right if he starting to heal himselfe or to cast on you.

Which begs the question why is nothing done to fix it then? :wall:
well, no, it does not beg the question.

Though your question DOES ...

it is not necessarily true that
a Pvper that programs can fix PvP
Perhaps, If s/he IS a good programmer
Some aspects could be "fixed"
Which does not necessarily lead to(the fix) being an acceptable fix.

*shrugs* all of which falls to the premise/hypothesis CAN PvP be fixed.:bored:

Flaunt your pitiful 300m elsewhere...you don't make that in pvp
The original question is: "What gives you your kick in PvP?"

I look at it as Player vs. Player. Because that's what makes the game fun. Players from all over the world, with different personalities and morales. And just because a player may seem a certain way in a game, doesn't mean that they are like it in real life.

Killing, stealing, looting, whatever it may be. It's fun.

Lets see I pvp on all my characters except my crafters.

I have a nox mage with swords and a scribe mage/wrestling(old school).
A bushido lumberjack(healing/anat), and a chiv/parry fencer(meditation/ninjitsu).

And 2 melee stealthers.

Depending on what the gank forecast looks like I'll usually be on a caster template unless the weather is gankalicious then I'll be on a stealther.
The majority of the time I'm on one of my reds.

What makes pvp fun for me? The chase. Not chasing but being chased and the thump of my heart wondering if I'll get away this time as I hide in a corner in say Fire Dungeon...then get revealed...then can't get around that damn rock!!!...then grey screen. I love it :)

It doesn't fit the current definitions of PVP, but it is still pvp, so I'll post it.

On my thief, besting someone and surviving, generally wearing nothing but clothes with arcane boots. I also get a kick out of the few time's I've managed to score a kill by simply outsmarting my victim and knowing the area. (I use wrestle, necro without SS, and magery without eval, so my chances of directly killing someone are nil...but i can disarm, summon, paralyze, and use other tricks to bring the current environment to my advantage). A gang of hellhounds, wraith form, and disarm from wrestle works quite well :) (especially if you take the weapon)

On my warrior, i enjoy hunting reds (and scripters) securing the area for others...though it seems like it's been years since I've seen a real fight.

On my stealth alchemist...i enjoy running into a group and blowing myself and them up..it just never gets old. (and even easier now with the 50 enhance pots bracer)

nothing, it sucks. i can't even remember what it was like anymore to be honest. i have vague memories of mass-slaughtering trammies with poison fields shortly after pub 16 came out when they thought they could come do harrowers but that's about it.
