Invasions, why are you doing them?

Don't get me wrong, as an RPer i'm all for saving Britannia and what not. but I was wondering why people do these invasions. Even on atlantic they are not too populated. But I saw a guy today saving brit and asked him why he is going these. Other than the new mob and that new item they drop that makes weapons brittle, why do them? Are they different then just fighting the bane in ilshenar?

When I asked this man why he fights he said "We lost in minoc and its gone"
Now i fought for minoc and it was most certainly there when i loged out. When i asked him what he meant he said "minoc is destroyed.

i'm not asking to be negative. Ive been working a lot lately and only get to put in a few hours of UO and I wanna know if i'm missing something.

Also the uo herald hasn't sent out an RSS feed in about 100 years.

I do them to spend time with folks I don't know too well and work as a group, I think they build community. Also, just something different to kill. I have chars loyal to the bane and those that are enemies of the Bane. The Focusing Gem is kinda like the door prize tho, not worth anything imo. The fey katana the guards drop is a different deal tho.

Also, I think maybe the guy was thinking Magincia? That's the only city I know of that got wiped of the face of the globe atm. You know some of us get confuzzled on occasion.

I've helped out a few times, Must have helped kill over 100 guards. But no drop, So I'm not bothering anymore.

Even if towns get overcome by the spawn I'm sure the bane will vanish at the next publish, The bane winning a city is pointless as it won't last.

No argument there. I just know the drop rate on them are ALOT lower than the gems or the sash. I have no use for the gems (no imbuer) and the sash doesn't impress me, but my swords guy has been waiting on something other than the swatter to kill the fey with

I guess I was lucky and got a sword on my first kill on the first day. I only have one swords toon and one sword is all i need. So kinda spoiled it for me getting one so fast, and i was offered 30 mil for it then....shoulda sold it...

2. On GL, the In the Shadow of Virtue story arc is connected to an EM story arc which we've been working for a long time. So there's more specific and immediate RP reasons to work it.

3. I've made money from it, from selling that katana.

4. I'm collecting the Bane Crystals and hope to make more money after the scenario is over.

5. I've gotten one of the katanas for someone in my guild.

6. I have found it to be a fun, well-done invasion.

7. I've gotten to work with some great people on GL also fighting it. Some are in the RP alliance, some aren't; some were known to me before, some weren't.

There are probably other reasons too that I am not thinking of.

As an RPer I do them because it's my duty to.

As a player I do them because a) it's something to keep me occupied, b) the Fey katana is pretty nice c) I enjoy them... they are challenging.

I'm not doing them. This collecting items BS has gone on long enough, and that's all the majority do it for anyways.

I'd like to see a real story pan out. If minocs destroyed, then destroy it.....these invasions aren't so spectacular.

I've helped the bane somewhat in vain hope that if they win enough towns they'll move on to luna and nuke the place from orbit.

This "invasion" seems boring and pointless compared to past ones though, they just turn it on (no GM in game leading the troops to battle and furthering the story, as a matter of fact no STORY in game at all...have to read UO Herald for the backstory now...) then it's just a grindfest, whichever side has the most tamers and sampires wins. (No mages allowed!)

I also find it funny that this "war" has 2 sides, yet they don't fight each other at all, the defenders just stand around outside of town, and the bane just hang out in town.

They should just dump balrons and daemons in luna again....yeah that event was poorly managed but at least it had a story and a short, but real invasion, but personally the only thing i liked about it was sitting there watching people get CREAMED by the mobs as they came out of the moongate, unaware. Though this time they should leave it that way

I was trying to gain loyalty to obtain the blackrock stew recipe, however whenever I had time to play, there wasn't a town being invaded. I'd actually forgotten about the invasion until I saw this thread.

I fight the bane mostly because im bored and hope for a katana that never seems to drop. The loyal points are nice too incase they ever make a quest worth doing.

Out of curiosity. If it is a town invasion, what are the guards doing there then? I saw them watching open brawling between banes and people attacking the mostly peaceful banes!

[OOC] Many of us have different motivations. Some like the items, some the challenge of fighting invasion spawn, and others are drawn by story and potential in game consequences (that's what draws me in). Since we are moving to a new shard, the invasions have helped us meet the people in the community. Our goal is to make connections to good and virtue type guilds that might be interested in hunting, spawning, factioning, rping, etc in the future.

Our guild primarily fights the invasions in Fel so those of us who like to pvp are able to actually protect the Meer, Brtiannia Defenders and Ophids from other players. Fighting the invasions in Fel also presents opportunities for faction interaction.

To OP, the player was wrong, Minoc was never lost on Atlantic, at least not in trammel.

I think this invasion storyline was good, but its moving pretty slow.. More player involvement in deciding what happens and more recruits to fight, as well as actual developments in the story would be great.

For many years, Lord British and all successive rulers of Britannia have treated the people of Sosaria with a policy of benign neglect. We have banded together into guilds and communities to provide mutual aid in time of need. We have governed our own affairs as if we were sovereign nations. Yet, we still pay tribute and declare fealty to the Crown; a Crown that is conspicuously absent when we need it the most.

During troubled times, we have poured forth to defend our friends, our guild mates, our homes and our towns from threat of invasion. We have pulled together to right the wrongs of the land, to defend the weak and to uphold some semblance of justice. Yet, while all of this was going on, where was Lord British, or the Council, Or Dawn? Sure, they may pop in to declare victory after we have soaked the soil with our collective blood, but is that enough?

Quite frankly, I have grown tired of this charade of indifference. I have grown tired of the parade of apathetic rulers who claim sovereignty over us.

I, for one, declare myself free of any bonds of fealty that have tied me to Queen Dawn. Not only that, but I will actively fight her and her supporters when and where I can.

I go out and kill the Meer on a regular basis because I like the fact there's an evil side to fight on this time, and because this Bane Chose reputation might be good for something someday.

Of course the best item in the whole event drops from the Bane so I don't expect them to ever win anything, but it's the thought that counts. At least the Meer drop a little gold, and I get millions of focus sashes that I don't need.

The Bane Chosen mostly attack people who have negative loyalty to them. There have been a few exceptions; some people seem to get attacked even with zero loyalty. But, generally, I think the idea is Virtuebane trying to scare people into staying neutral and not fighting him. "You are in no personal danger as long as you do not interfere." Not interfering is, I would argue, a perfectly legitimate RP reaction. It's entirely "real" that even some great warriors who could help out simply do not care who is actually running things. Perhaps figuring that most things will stay the same, and if they don't, there's other facets to run to.

It's an invasion because they walk in with weapons, with demonic assistance, explicitly claim ownership of territory they have no claim to, try to incite people to kill Britannian guards, and then attack people they don't like.

That this is an invasion has been explicit and undeniable.

If by "the guards" you mean the town guards, then one of the aspects of this invasion that isn't as good, indeed is a tad dumb, is the way that both the good guys on the outskirts and the town guards don't do much. Every once in awhile I see an NPC trying to fight and I smile. The invaded cities should, perhaps, be emptied for the duration of the invasion? Or someone should give the Virtuebane Guards the "immortal death" ability like Slasher had and Crimson Dragons had, where they could kill invulnerable NPCs?

The old War of Shadows Shadowlord invasion had, I kid you not, refugees. At the very start of that war there were escort NPCs, a bunch of them clustered together, who all wanted to go to Jhelom. Why Jhelom? As a non-faction city, it was immune to the War of Shadows. That was a nice touch by the team and it was greatly appreciated.

If by "the guards" you mean the Virtuebane Guards, then they are there for two reasons. One, they are the elite knights of Virtuebane's invasion. Two, if Virtuebane wins a town, they replace the town guards and physically occupy the city.

people were saying there was no reason to kill the bane... to earn loyalty for shattered potions?

so now you kill them to get the best item... dont complain

Fighting the bane in a town should, theoretically, speed up the process of getting ophidian/meer points, because it's fairly easy to exhaust the ilsh compassion camp if you kill bane too fast. Plus, you get a chance for the crystals from the bane / dragons / hell hounds / and the katana from the demons. You don't get anything from the ilsh guys, and there's no progression by killing them.

True, towns don't get destroyed, yet -- not sure what that guy was talking about. But I wanted to throw this out there, remember, for those who got the Sherry the Mouse statuette, the statuette is a town crier. Lock it down in your house if you have one to avoid having to track down an npc, and it'll tell you what's up when you log-in. Pretty handy.

I have all but stopped doing invasions. Got my katana on Origin and Chesapeake, got my friend one on Chesapeake, got a lot of sashes on both shards and some of the gems. I may go back for more gems, but really, before all of this, I was a bane supporter. However, now that the meer are involved, I really don't feel comfortable supporting either side. The ophidians are evil to me, they invaded Delucia then they invaded Vesper and other towns, and I hate them. The meer haven't done anything worthwhile to me. The bane, until they "targetted" the meer -- meaning, not actually invade them, just ask us to take them out -- haven't done anything other than kill ophidians. So I've been at a RP loss. Basically, everyone is telling me how the bane are "bad," so I have to adjust, consider the "good" meer, and be confused by the otherwise "neutral" ophidians," which can never be good imo due to their unprovoked invasion and their latest regarding Ricardo -- theft or not.

I carry the burden that some Towns on Baja have fallen to the Bane. I believe the Bane, led by this Virtuebane seek to destroy or conquer each Town tied to a specific Virtue as revealed to us in times past by Lord British. That any Town of Virtue falls, is a great disgrace. I fight and Defend all I am able, most especially to me, my Beloved Trinsic.

In time, as in past times, I fully expect the veil of deception or intrigue will be parted or torn asunder, and our True enemy will be revealed, and will need to be Defeated.

I fight because I am able. I fight because I Honor my Code and my Oath. I fight because when I do, others rally to the cause.

If i wanted to grind mobs and earn reputation points i would play WoW...don't they realize trying to turn UO into WoW is epic fail? Maybe once the subscriptions rates drop more they MIGHT realize that...
