Don't really care for the black. Like the idea of only the core being orange, but the black just doesn't work for me.

IMO, the mostly black beetle looks too much like the existing giant beetle. Like the look, though.

The fire beetle needs to be obviously radiating heat from every pore; hence I voted the orange is better. But change the under-shell colour to say a dark purple or sickly green, and make it a Death Beetle and I'd want to see that in game, yes!

Both are fine - what really bugs me (hehe) is the bright yellow "under-shell" not the top one.

I like the 2nd one.. However, I would use the first beetle's darker orange in place of the yellow for the abdomen to imply a more “smoldery” heat.

I don’t think the beetle should look like it was the survivor of a nuclear war, or that it should “radiate heat out of every pore.” We have to ride them after all, so their pronotum and elytron should be significantly cooler than their core.

And they should definately bring back the particle effects for the fire steed and the nightmare!

I forgot how cool the fire steeds used to be.
I wasn't a good enough tamer to tame one until after I was robbed of KR.

The beetle would be cool if the hot molten part was just hinted at while the beetle was at rest (wings folded). Just a little glow along the cracks of it's exoskeleton. Then when it's wings are open it's bright molten glow would shine forth hence it's name Fire Beetle.

Damn, now I'm going to be pining over the loss of the Third Dawn client all over again.
I really, really miss how the weapon stayed in my right hand and the shield stayed in the left hand no matter which direction I faced. There are lots of little details I sorely miss from that client.

While I can understand the color choices Uthva picked, not sure I prefer it, to me, it makes the beetle look A) more like a lightening bug, or B) like a Tron Beetle (although THAT would be pretty awesome - a LIGHT BEETLE!).

Not to say that I don't think that the current one doesn't need some tweaking, but it's a huge improvement over what we had.

I hate to say I like the black... Personally I'd prefer more of a brownish black.... and yes smoldery look... over the gaudy bright orange..

And I also agree... bring back the cool effects for the fire steeds...

By all means Grimm. Feedback in response to our feedback is always welcome (now get to work on that higher resolution! ).

Seriously though, hearing the devs' thoughts on such issues is ALWAYS welcome. Yeah it's better than the nuclear yellow it had recently been, it just needs to have the contrast level lowered so that the texture detail can come back. Let the internals be neon, let particles give the "smoldering" effect and let the shell be more subdued.

New orange on the fire beetle looks weird and just wrong. At first glance, I thought my gpu was going when I logged in. I was on TS and told everyone that my fire beetle was bugged, lol! Then these forums said this was the new look!!!! yikes!
Although the black one looks cool, I think it still lacks something.
