Jack O' Lantern Tower HI JACKED on Sonoma

The Jack O' Lantern Tower was :gun: Hi-Jacked last night.
Thieves, snook in last night and out of jealous vindictiveness, achieved destruction of the tower's purpose. They destroyed work done by many players on Sonoma who filled packs with named Jack O' Lanterns for others to find free, by stealing the remaining Jack O' Lanterns in the tower which were accessible-to-anyone.

Although it is inevitible, and expected to happen, it's nice it didn't happen earlier.

What is it they expect to achieve?

HISTORY:

The tower, built this Halloween on Sonoma outside Luna's North Exit, was created with the purpose to preserve and supply free to all players, their named Jack O' Lanterns.

Runes were scattered advertisng: 'Jack O' Lanterns IN TOWER OUTSIDE LUNA's NORTH EXIT. Claim yours free. Drop Off Unwanted ones!'

By collecting Jacks from farmer's fields and drop-offs donated from many players adding to the selections, thousands of the Jack O' Lanterns were sorted alphabetically into 26 bags marked by Runes locked down on top of each bag from A to Z, all accessible to anyone.

The many players who dropped off pumpkins, placed them in supplied gift boxes accessible-to-all, to-be-sorted later into alphabetically labeled backpacks locked down on the main floor, all open to the public. Love Spirit spent many long hours at nights setting up the Jack O' Lantern filing system, sorting the named pumpkins, hunting the fields collecting them and advertising the Tower. Many players helped sort the pumpkins Alphabetically when real life prevented LS's help.


Suspected Reason for Hi Jacking:
Suspicion of why the Tower was hi-jacked last night, leads to certain vindictive players who, like spoiled little kids, started a vendetta over not getting what "I WANT RIGHT NOW" from those who work hard in this game to achieve and earn everything they gain.

The Culprits came as thieves in the night, last night, taking the thousands of preserved and sorted Jack O' Lanterns, emptying the bags on the floor -- and for what? Imagine those thieves at work, laughing and drooling over thoughts of everyone's surprise at finding the bags all empty today?

Must be Kids without something more constructive to do in life?

At least players like C'est La Vie got their Jack O' Lanterns before the kids wrecked the joint.

I'm sorry to hear about the incident... I know most feel it is "just a game" but even still childish and rude behavior like that have no place.

All I can say is rest well in the knowledge that someday their day will come... and the behavior will not be forgotten... perhaps they may seek forgiveness at some point but I doubt it.

And thanks MalagAste for your very considerate reply. Unfortunately this is what one can expect in a game like this. So we do what we can. It was great when so many players joined in the fun. No one really wanted pumpkins badly. It was pure FUN. Most of the Jack O' Lanterns were picked up by then. What did amaze me though, was the programming and how it worked. One could not get a pumpkin in the farmer's field to spawn in their name IF that player was not on line long enough. As a result, the back room in the tower is FULL of duplicate Jack O' Lanterns stacked and locked down named with players, who are on line all the time ... and some of them, are macroing all night long. So that programming isn't being fair to the players who hunted for hours in the field hoping to get their named pumpkins. That is why we were collecting the ones that did spawn, AFTER the player logged out and came back in to the game later. <<<<something like that was working so it started the "Save the Pumpkins" fad.

There's the word I needed: FAD.. a fun FAD. hahaha

Sorry to hear this happened, but I am not surprised it did either. The greater freedom you leave to people (in this case, access to the lanterns in your house) the greater freedom you allow people to be *****, and some people will act as such. Sadly, this is something those advocating or demanding more freedom of play (ie: a fel ruleset in trammel) can't get their heads around.
It has nothing to do with the PvP or the PKing or the stealing or the dying. It is the players who are *****. There are no consequences for being a ****. That is why trammel exists.

Well I can say this year the spawn of the JOL.... is weird. I logged in one character he was on less than six seconds and he got a JOL.

One of my other characters I used for 4 days straight trying to get a JOL .... He never got one infact I only saw his pumpkin once.

I do like how they did several different titles for each character. That was cool.

But I liked it better the one year when everyone you picked up turned to your name.

That is why we started saving JOLs. If you logged in for the first time, often your pumpkin would show up in the fields but someone else would get it and throw it away, while searching for their own.

Then I noticed when I was in the fields hunting, others who weren't in the field were having their named pumpkins spawn. Mine didn't spawn while I was in the fields hunting JOLs. Mine did spawn after I logged in and out and did other things, after which players would bring some to me. I also found theirs AFTER they logged out sometimes, or just after they logged into the game. Many were NOT getting pumpkins after weeks of hunting for theirs and after hours and hours in the fields. Why was I getting so many? I not only hunted the farmer fields, but often too a break to hunt dungeons and Illshenar, thus moving around and staying on line, often logging off to take care of real life and returning hours later to hunt for more pumpkins. I found one for a fellow who had been trying to get one for weeks .. when I told him to go somewhere else, chase around banks or log off for a while then back in. THat worked. He went to his house and logged off after doing something in there. Immediately I found his pumpkin where small pumpkins started spawning in his name. I started telling everyone to try anything different because I noticed one player's name getting loads of pumpkins who NEVER went to the fields but who I happened to observe was macroing a program which took him from bank to bank to bank all night long. So perhaps moving over server lines in the shard, and logging in and out, helped. I never did quite figure it out but managed to get quite a few pumpkins to spawn for others who wanted one by telling them to try different things, like log out after chasing around the shard for awhile. Check the fields when you first log in. Etc.

I won't edit this mess. I've been making runes advertising the Jack O' Lantern Tower Hit By Hi-JACKERS because it hits my funny bone!
I put the regular Malas-house-colored runes marked with the house sign's new name: "JACK O' LANTERN TOWER HIT BY HI-JACKERS. Read all about it on Stratics U Hall."

Good Question. My question is why do they pay Real $$$ for pixelized rares and UO gold? Crazy.

Also, yours is a very clear sighted observation. Maybe players like the Hi Jackers have to pat themselves on the back because who else will? They probably need group HUGS!

Aside from all that, and off topic, your generous offer of imbued items for new characters from other shards is applauded. Recently I made a few new characters to see what other shards are like. I missed having an LRC outfit. Escorting ability in HAVEN was amazing. How easy it was for a newbie to make and save gold immediately! So I would buy new skills with escort money, then save up 10K, then hunt vendors but none selling simple 64 spell books for 5000 gp or less, nor city books and rune books at low prices. Trying to start a new character from scratch was a real learning experience! I have a scribe but can't imbue. So I do scribing.

I'll have new players contact you occasionally for imbued items, if that is ok.
