No, they are keeping it a secret until next week because they don't want WoW to steal their ideas. :)

(I've never understood why UO, out of ANY existing online, is so utterly secretive. It's baffling.)

I think that secrecy in any online game is very important, EXTREMELY important.

Why ?

Because those who know changes in advance can better prepare to them and this can potentially give to "some" players over other players even an enormous advantage sometimes economic sometimes even in fighting.

For example, imagine that a design change would make a rare no longer rare but spawnable, those privy of the valuable information could sell such a rare before the patch when it will loose value.
Or the information that an artifact valuable to fighting will be made no longer spawnable. Those privy of the information could stock up this given artifact before the information becomes public and thus reduce greatly the number of others who could take advantage of such an item.

And these are merely only a couple of several examples that could be made as in regards to why I think keeping design changes as much secret as possible, is VERY important, EXTREMELY important, IMHO, to try keep ALL players on an equal footing.

True has to be secret so the hundred thousands who get the 13+ year rewards will be surprised.

While I do enjoy surprises, I think very often design changes should be kept a secret regardless of the "surprise" factor but more because having some players know about them but other players not, could greatly inbalance the game either economically or in fighting power in favour of some players rather than other players just for the simple thing of being privy of such an information before the patch makes it as available to the general public.

Keeping game changes the most secret as possible I see it as a VERY good thing and balancing factor.

I would go as far as to make items pertaining to design changes being tested in betas or on test server, be just generically labelled items (resource #1, resource #2, etc....) and not the "actual" items that will be used when the publish gets released so that even testing players cannot have a clue of what items will be part of the design changes and not be able to take any advantage from them before other players.

That's at least how I see it.

Spoken like a true paranoid, lol.

I'm discussing the releasing of information like 13th anni rewards, vet rewards, expansions and the like. Not things like potential exploits and bugs. They've never been forthcoming, and seriously... there is no reason why they should be keeping it so close to their chest. They already stated it getts rolled out next week, why not divulge some information while they've got it?

Ok, I'll open the door a little for you.

One item will be a white leather dye tub.

The other items will be quite numerous, you will need more than 1 account to claim them all, on a single shard.

Yeah, I already read that post, lol. And it would have been better as a UO wise teaser than spoken to a select few who then disseminated the information.

*hands Popps a note that says 'you're excused'*

There you go.

Mesanna told a player in a random conversation and then the player discussed it here publicly.

I'm merely stating that it would have been better as a teaser that was presented by Mesanna or another dev team member for UO as a whole on stratics and the herald.

she also named about 5 of the 9 during a sonoma trammy event for dying pumpkins and then asked if anyone had ideas for a final *ninth* one because they needed to figure out the last. I cannot remember the few others she mentioned. The first was a white leather dye tub. Ill try to ask my guild mates that were there and far more interested than I. they were actually really usable options compared to the past though.

If they do a white leather dye tub, I hope it takes charges from white dye. Otherwise, it'll take business away from my only source of worthwhile income.

Well with any luck it'll be a slightly different shade of white. Personally I'd like to see a non bleeding form of white, like a gentle white, myself.

Yeah, I'd like to see that too. The thing is, whatever it is will almost certainly look better than just using the glowy white, and it'll kill the use of white dyes on leather. So, even if it's a slightly different shade, I'm hoping they consider this. If they do use dyes to charge it, on the other hand, it'll help sales immensely. That would drive up the value of white dye, and they may not want this. I just hope they thought of it or will consider it and go with what's best for the game as a whole. In this case, economics.

Come to think of it, they could add charges to all dye tubs, and add a variety of recharge sources. Not necessarily hard to get or expensive sources, just something to add to the game and the economic picture.

That is 100% false. I saw her say it and she told at least 40 people. It was when she dyed the Mesanna Jack O' Lantern on Napa. It was a public event that had been broadcast on these boards ahead of time. It was held in the Counselor's Hall in Brit and was open to everyone.

It wasn't a random conversation.

Does it really matter who said what where?

What does matter to me is it's now one week before Halloween... and no trick or treating in UO yet...

*frowns*

And I still don't have a 13th anniversary gift either...

We're talking about a couple of useless rewards here, not game-breaking power items.

I'll take a Vet Reward that cleans and loads my cannons all in one step from items in the ship's cargo hold.

Or one that uses alchemy to create black powder all in one step.

LOL. What I'm saying is that it wasn't announced on a site like stratics or the herald for the entire p(l)aying public to disseminate. And yes, it was a random conversation as the event was not about learning what the rewards were, but to dye pumpkins.

Please read ALL the posts in the thread before you jump to conclusions, I've already stated this point, thank you. :next:
