Come one and all and buy the first High Seas Booster! For only $15 you can be the proud owner of a shovel or maybe even a pickaxe! That's right! You can while your hours away staring at a poorly rendered picture of a rock while your character wealds his trusty pickaxe! Watch your screen display your rock for hours and hours of amazing action!

Once in a while you will be able to walk a few steps along your amazing mountain range, rendered in the latest high-end graphic tehnology! Marvel at the mono sound of your pickaxe as you chip away at your rock. Be amazed at the realism of hauling impossibly heavy ammounts of iron ore. If you are really lucky, you might even find a rare gem -- how wonderful!

For the more adventurorous crafters you have the opportunity to visit the dangerous and frightening dungeons of Sosaria! Leave your cold dead body next to some of the most valuable rocks ever known to adventurers! Marvel at your rock as your ghost sees it in amazing BLACK and WHITE!

For the stupendously lucky crafters, you will be awarded the most awesome prize imaginable -- SALTPETER -- Wooohooo!

Or you could just hop on a boat with a fire beetle and mine around the coast?

There are relatively safe spots in several dungeons. I plan to use a more robust character to mark a few runes for me, as I have for dungeon fishing.

There are plenty of dungeons that have low level spawn that a beetle can handle while you mine, and a fair number of areas in dungeons that have little to no spawn. I have been mining on Test with a miner that has no offensive skills at all to see what can be done. With just a little bit of thinking you can mine all you want in relative safety.

Soooo, it didn't occur to you, upon reading my original post, that I might not actually enjoy mining? Not just in dungeons, but anywhere?

Did it ever occur to you that maybe there is more to this game and the latest booster than just mining? If you want saltpeter but don't want to mine for it, BUY it from an alchemist vendor!

Did it occur to you that you could maybe do something you enjoy to make the gold to buy the bits you need that come from something you don't enjoy doing?

It clearly hasn't occurred to you that there's nothing written down anywhere that says every purchaser of every bit of UO has to enjoy every bit of it. There's an old saying that's applicable here; "you can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

Incidentally, I'd rather chew my own leg off than go do Navrey, Slasher etc. Should I be having hysterics too?

I kept resisting the impulse to tell people to go join the army when everyone was complaining about not being able to find enough saltpetre. I'm not sure they would have understood... :)

There is a big difference between Narvey and Saltpeter.

I paid for Stygian Abyss and there are many things I get for that. Big dungeon, new skills new race of character types etc... I get to choose which of them I enjoy and which of them I don't want to play.

When I bought the High Seas Booster, I did so because I thought I would be able to sail around in ships blasting the baddie pirates with my cannons. Unfortunately, in order to blast pirates with my cannons I AM FORCED to either pay stupendous ammounts for saltpeter or gunpowder or spend hours mining. And unlike most other UO players I do not use scripts and I do not leave UO on and go and watch TV while my robot character mines for me.

So the reason the High Seas Booster sucks is becauses we ARE FORCED to go down certain routes or we have wasted our money.

Its like, here, have a new sports car, but... In order to drive it you have to make your own engine, your own fuel and put the whole thing together from parts. Not a motor mechanic? Oh dear, what a shame, maybe you can sell the parts for scrap instead?

Bleh!

Um no? I wanted a tangle, I didn't wanna farm Navrey. I found a player that did want to farm Navrey, bought his spare tangle. Sorted.

You're missing the whole point. I purchased the High Seas Booster and I am only complaining about the High Seas Booster. That I don't seem able to use ANY of it because of this rediculous saltpeter problem.

If I wanted to play Narvey or the Stigian Dragon or chicken fighting, I wouldn't have to pay $15 for the privelage. But like a stupid fool I did actually pay my $15 and I feel RIPPED OFF!

Um what has that got to do with the saltpeter problem?

I didn't want to do something, but I wanted one of the drops from it. So I found someone who did want to do it and paid him for the drop. To get that gold, I did stuff I enjoy.

You don't want to mine. So find someone that does like mining and pay them for the resource you want. To get the gold, do something you enjoy.

Short of drawing you a picture, I really don't think I can make it any clearer than that.

Incidentally, if the booster is so terrible (you played the beta) why in the name of all that's sane and sensible did you buy the damn thing? I really, really, really do not understand that.

Its too expensive. That is my problem with buying saltpeter. It is only ammunition after all and not a 120 magery powerscroll.

Why did I buy it? Because I have played UO for 13 years and I expected something better. And in the hope you might change the saltpeter so it was easier to get? Which, in fact, you did do for a while. But now you are going to make it cost me more than the price of my house just for 700 saltpeter. No thanks.

Errrr, I'm just a mod. I'm not a dev. I'm a self confessed technoweiner who wouldn't know where to even start on the sort of work the devs do. I make jewellery and run a backpackers hostel for a living! I haven't made anything do anything.

Oh, so the people who moderate these forums have nothing whatsoever to do with the Devs, then? Hmmmm, yes I believe you... No really, I do...

The moderators of these boards have no control over how the developers change things we work for stratics not mythic!
we are lucky in that sometimes the devs will read these posts but thats were it stops !

What you believe is your own perogative; it won't change the facts, which are that no member of staff here at Stratics has any control whatsoever over what the devs, or EA, do.

How about this point of view..

This is the first Booster/Xpac that actually *Requires* you to either Jump through crafting hoops, or spend large amounts of gold to even enjoy the Content, that happens to be not even worth doing in the first place from an economic standpoint.

FYI
Stratics is manned by VOLUNTEERS.
These are people who play the game, just like you do.
These are people who pay their monthly subs to EA, just like you do.
They also volunteer their time to help provide this space where you can discuss the game, ask questions and get answers.
We also do our best to document changes in the game on the UO Stratics - News - Main website.
None of us have any connection with Mythic. That includes me, the Managing Editor. I don't even live in USA.

Oh my, so many Moderators finding it so important to scotch this rumour -- fascinating!

Don't you think this is strange... Go and look at the UO web page, go on, go and have a little look around there, see if you can find an official forum for UO. No? Can't find one? Don't you think that's a little bit strange?

Every other MMO out there has it's own official forum. Just go and look at some of the other online games out there. Every single one - even the free ones - they all have their own official forums on their web page, don't they? Hmmm...

I remember some years ago now, they did used to have an official forum. Some of you out there might remember that too... What happened, you may ask? Well, they decided to stop running it. They warned everybody in advance that the entire forum would be uprooted and copied to another web page and they would run the new forum for UO. Three guesses for the name of this lucky web page...

Why, it was Stratics, of course...
